1Now the famineוְהָרָעָ֖בve.ha.ra.'AvH7458was still severeכָּבֵ֥דka.VedH3515in the landבָּאָֽרֶץ׃ba.'A.retzH776.

2וַיְהִ֗יvay.HiH1961So whenכַּאֲשֶׁ֤רka.'a.SherH834אֶת־'et-H853Jacob’s sonshad eaten allכִּלּוּ֙ לֶאֱכֹ֣לki.Lu le.'e.KholH3615 H398the grainהַשֶּׁ֔בֶרha.She.verH7668אֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834they had broughtהֵבִ֖יאוּhe.Vi.'uH935from Egyptמִמִּצְרָ֑יִםmi.mitz.Ra.yimH4714,their fatherאֲבִיהֶ֔ם'a.vi.HemH1saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to themאֲלֵיהֶם֙'a.lei.HemH413, “Go backשֻׁ֖בוּShu.vuH7725and buyשִׁבְרוּ־shiv.ru-H7666usa little moreמְעַט־me.'at-H4592foodאֹֽכֶל׃'O.khelH400.”

3But Judahוַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוּדָ֖הvai.Yo.mer ye.hu.DahH3063 H559repliedאֵלָ֛יו לֵאמֹ֑ר'e.Lav le.MorH559 H413, “The manהָאִ֤ישׁ לֵאמֹר֙ha.'Ish le.MorH376 H559solemnly warnedH5749us, ‘You will notלֹֽא־lo'-H3808seeתִרְא֣וּtir.'UH7200my faceפָנַ֔יfa.NaiH6440again unlessבִּלְתִּ֖יbil.TiH1115your brotherאֲחִיכֶ֥ם'a.chi.KhemH251is with youאִתְּכֶֽם׃'i.te.KhemH854.’

4Ifאִם־ יֶשְׁךָ֛'im- yesh.KhaH518 H3426you will sendמְשַׁלֵּ֥חַme.sha.Le.achH7971אֶת־'et-H853our brotherאָחִ֖ינוּ'a.Chi.nuH251with usאִתָּ֑נוּ'i.Ta.nuH854,we will go downנֵרְדָ֕הne.re.DahH3381and buyוְנִשְׁבְּרָ֥הve.nish.be.RahH7666foodאֹֽכֶל׃'O.khelH400for you.

5But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518you will notאֵינְךָ֥'ei.ne.KhaH369send himמְשַׁלֵּ֖חַme.sha.Le.achH7971,we will notלֹ֣אlo'H3808goנֵרֵ֑דne.RedH3381;forכִּֽי־ki-H3588the manהָאִ֞ישׁha.'IshH376toldאָמַ֤ר'a.MarH559usאֵלֵ֙ינוּ֙'e.Lei.nuH413, ‘You will notלֹֽא־lo'-H3808seeתִרְא֣וּtir.'UH7200my faceפָנַ֔יfa.NaiH6440again unlessבִּלְתִּ֖יbil.TiH1115your brotherאֲחִיכֶ֥ם'a.chi.KhemH251is with youאִתְּכֶֽם׃'i.te.KhemH854.’”

6“Whyלָמָ֥הla.MahH4100did you bring this troubleהֲרֵעֹתֶ֖םha.re.'o.TemH7489upon me?”Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478askedוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559. “Why did you tellלְהַגִּ֣ידle.ha.GidH5046the manלָאִ֔ישׁla.'IshH376you had anotherהַע֥וֹדha.'odH5750brotherאָֽח׃'AchH251?”

7They repliedוַיֹּאמְר֡וּvai.yo.me.RuH559, “The manהָ֠אִישׁHa.'ishH376questionedשָׁא֣וֹלsha.'olH7592usin detailשָֽׁאַל־sha.'al-H7592about ourselves and our familyוּלְמֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֜נוּu.le.mo.lad.Te.nuH4138לֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559: ‘Is your fatherאֲבִיכֶ֥ם'a.vi.KhemH1stillהַע֨וֹדha.'odH5750aliveחַי֙chaiH2416?Do you haveהֲיֵ֣שׁha.YeshH3426another brotherאָ֔ח'AchH251?’And we answeredוַנַ֨גֶּד־va.Na.ged-H5046himaccordinglyעַל־ פִּ֖י הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה'al- pi ha.de.va.Rim ha.'E.lehH5921 H6310 H1697 H428.How could we possibly knowH3045thatכִּ֣יkiH3588he would sayיֹאמַ֔רyo.MarH559, ‘Bringהוֹרִ֖ידוּho.Ri.duH3381אֶת־'et-H853your brother hereאֲחִיכֶֽם׃'a.chi.KhemH251’?”

8And Judahיְהוּדָ֜הye.hu.DahH3063saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶל־'el-H413his fatherאָבִ֗יו'a.VivH1Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֣לYis.ra.'ElH3478, “Sendשִׁלְחָ֥הshil.ChahH7971the boyהַנַּ֛עַרha.Na.'arH5288with meאִתִּ֖י'i.TiH854,and we will go at onceוְנָק֣וּמָה וְנֵלֵ֑כָהve.na.Ku.mah ve.ne.Le.khahH6965 H1980,so that we may liveוְנִֽחְיֶה֙ve.nich.YehH2421and notוְלֹ֣אve.Lo'H3808dieנָמ֔וּת גַּם־na.Mut gam-H4191 H1571—neither weאֲנַ֥חְנוּ גַם־'a.Nach.nu gam-H587 H1571,nor youאַתָּ֖ה גַּם־'a.Tah gam-H859 H1571,nor our childrenטַפֵּֽנוּ׃ta.Pe.nuH2945.

9Iאָֽנֹכִי֙'a.no.KhiH595will guarantee his safetyאֶֽעֶרְבֶ֔נּוּ'e.'er.Ve.nuH6148.You may hold meתְּבַקְשֶׁ֑נּוּte.vak.She.nuH1245personally responsibleמִיָּדִ֖יmi.ya.DiH3027.Ifאִם־'im-H518I do notלֹ֨אlo'H3808bring him backהֲבִיאֹתִ֤יוha.vi.'o.TivH935אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙'e.Lei.khaH413and set himוְהִצַּגְתִּ֣יוve.hi.tzag.TivH3322before youלְפָנֶ֔יךָle.fa.Nei.khaH6440, then may Ibear the guilt before youוְחָטָ֥אתִֽיve.cha.Ta.tiH2398all my lifeכָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃kol- hai.ya.MimH3605 H3117.

10If we had notכִּ֖י לוּלֵ֣אki lu.Le'H3588 H3884delayedהִתְמַהְמָ֑הְנוּ כִּֽי־hit.mah.Ma.he.nu ki-H4102 H3588,we could have come and goneשַׁ֖בְנוּ זֶ֥הShav.nu zehH7725 H2088twiceפַעֲמָֽיִם׃fa.'a.Ma.yimH6471by nowעַתָּ֥ה'a.TahH6258.”
