22During the nightH3915 H1931Jacob got upוַיָּ֣קָם׀vai.Ya.komH6965and tookוַיִּקַּ֞חvai.yi.KachH3947אֶת־'et-H853his twoשְׁתֵּ֤יshe.TeiH8147wivesנָשָׁיו֙na.ShavH802וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853,his twoשְׁתֵּ֣יshe.TeiH8147maidservantsשִׁפְחֹתָ֔יוshif.cho.TavH8198וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853,and his elevenאַחַ֥ד עָשָׂ֖ר'a.Chad 'a.SarH259 H6240sonsיְלָדָ֑יוye.la.DavH3206,and crossedH5674אֵ֖ת'etH853the fordמַעֲבַ֥רma.'a.VarH4569of the Jabbokיַבֹּֽק׃ya.BokH2999.

23He took themH3947and sent them acrossH5674H853the streamהַנָּ֑חַלha.Na.chalH5158 H5674H853,along with all his possessionsאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834.

24So Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290was leftוַיִּוָּתֵ֥רvai.yi.va.TerH3498all aloneלְבַדּ֑וֹle.va.DoH905,and there a manאִישׁ֙'ishH376wrestledוַיֵּאָבֵ֥קvai.ye.'a.VekH79with himעִמּ֔וֹi.MoH5973untilעַ֖ד'adH5704daybreakעֲל֥וֹת הַשָּֽׁחַר׃a.Lot ha.Sha.charH5927 H7837.

25When the man sawוַיַּ֗רְאvai.Yar'H7200thatכִּ֣יkiH3588he could notלֹ֤אlo'H3808overpowerיָכֹל֙ya.KholH3201Jacob,he struckוַיִּגַּ֖עvai.yi.Ga'H5060the socketבְּכַף־be.khaf-H3709of Jacob’s hipיְרֵכ֑וֹye.re.KhoH3409and dislocatedוַתֵּ֙קַע֙ כַּף־va.Te.ka' kaf-H3363 H3709itיֶ֣רֶךְYe.rekhH3290 H3409as theyH5973wrestledH79.

26Then the man saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Let me goשַׁלְּחֵ֔נִיsha.le.Che.niH7971,forH3588it is daybreakעָלָ֖ה הַשָּׁ֑חַר'a.Lah ha.Sha.charH5927 H7837.”But Jacob repliedוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “I will notH3808let you goאֲשַֽׁלֵּחֲךָ֔'a.sha.le.cha.KhaH7971unlessאִם־'im-H3588 H518you bless meבֵּרַכְתָּֽנִי׃be.rakh.Ta.niH1288.”

27“Whatמַה־mah-H4100is your nameשְּׁמֶ֑ךָshe.Me.khaH8034?”the man askedאֵלָ֖יו'e.LavH559 H413. “Jacobיַעֲקֹֽב׃ya.'a.KoH3290,”he repliedH559.

28Then the man saidH559, “Your nameH8034will noלֹ֤אlo'H3808longerעוֹד֙'OdH5750beH559JacobH3290,but Israelכִּ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑לki Yis.ra.'ElH3478 H3588,becauseאִם־ כִּֽי־'im- ki-H3588 H518you have struggledשָׂרִ֧יתָsa.Ri.taH8280withעִם־'im-H5973Godאֱלֹהִ֛ים'E.lo.HimH430and withוְעִם־ve.'im-H5973menH376,and you have prevailedוַתּוּכָֽל׃va.tu.KhalH3201.”

29And JacobH3290requestedוַיִּשְׁאַ֣לvai.yish.'AlH7592 H559, “Pleaseנָּ֣אna'H4994tell meהַגִּֽידָה־ha.gi.dah-H5046your nameH8034.”But he repliedH559, “Whyלָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖הLa.mah zehH4100 H2088do you askתִּשְׁאַ֣לtish.'AlH7592my nameH8034?”Then he blessedוַיְבָ֥רֶךְvay.Va.rekhH1288Jacobאֹת֖וֹ'o.ToH853thereשָֽׁם׃ShamH8033.

30So JacobH3290namedוַיִּקְרָ֧אvai.yik.Ra'H7121 H8034the placeהַמָּק֖וֹםha.ma.KomH4725Penielפְּנִיאֵ֑לpe.ni.'ElH6439,saying, “Indeedכִּֽי־ki-H3588,I have seenרָאִ֤יתִיra.'I.tiH7200Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430faceפָּנִ֣יםpa.NimH6440toאֶל־'el-H413faceפָּנִ֔יםpa.NimH6440,and yet my lifeנַפְשִֽׁי׃naf.ShiH5315was sparedוַתִּנָּצֵ֖לva.ti.na.TzelH5337.”

31The sunהַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁha.She.meshH8121roseוַיִּֽזְרַֽח־vai.yiz.rach-H2224above himasכַּאֲשֶׁ֥רka.'a.SherH834he passed byעָבַ֖ר'a.VarH5674אֶת־'et-H853PenuelH6439,and heוְה֥וּאve.Hu'H1931was limpingצֹלֵ֖עַtzo.Le.a'H6760because ofעַל־'al-H5921his hipיְרֵכֽוֹ׃ye.re.KhoH3409.

32Thereforeכֵּ֡ןkenH5921 H3651toעַ֖ד'adH5704thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088dayהַיּ֣וֹםhai.YomH3117the Israelitesבְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜לve.nei- Yis.ra.'ElH1121 H3478H853do notלֹֽא־lo'-H3808eatיֹאכְל֨וּyo.khe.LuH398the tendonגִּ֣יד הַנָּשֶׁ֗הgid ha.na.ShehH1517 H5384attachedH834toH5921the socketכַּ֣ףkafH3709of the hipH3409,becauseכִּ֤יkiH3588the socketבְּכַף־be.khaf-H3709of Jacob’sיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290hipH3409was struckנָגַע֙na.Ga'H5060near that tendonבְּגִ֖יד הַנָּשֶֽׁה׃be.Gid ha.na.ShehH1517 H5384.
