1 Kings 20

American Standard Version

1And Ben-hadadH1130 the kingH4428 of Syria gatheredH6908 all his host togetherH6908; and there were thirtyH7970 and twoH8147 kingsH4428 with him, and horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393: and he wentH5927 up and besieged SamariaH8111, and foughtH3898 against it. 2And he sentH7971 messengersH4397 to AhabH256 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, into the cityH5892, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad, 3Thy silverH3701 and thy goldH2091 is mine; thy wivesH802 also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine. 4And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 answered and saidH559, It is according to thy sayingH559, my lordH113, O kingH4428; I am thine, and all that I have. 5And the messengersH4397 came again, and saidH559, ThusH3541 speaketh Ben-hadadH1130, sayingH559, I sentH7971 indeed unto thee, sayingH559, Thou shalt deliver me thy silverH3701, and thy goldH2091, and thy wivesH802, and thy children; 6but I will sendH7971 my servantsH5650 unto thee to-morrow about this timeH6256, and they shall searchH2664 thy houseH1004, and the housesH1004 of thy servantsH5650; and it shall beH1961, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyesH5869, they shall putH7760 it in their handH3027, and takeH3947 it awayH7971.

7Then the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 calledH7121 all the eldersH2205 of the landH776, and saidH559, Mark, I pray you, and seeH7200 how this manH2205 seeketh mischief: for he sentH7971 unto me for my wivesH802, and for my children, and for my silverH3701, and for my goldH2091; and I denied him not. 8And all the eldersH2205 and all the peopleH5971 saidH559 unto him, Hearken thou not, neither consent. 9Wherefore he saidH559 unto the messengersH4397 of Ben-hadadH1130, Tell my lordH113 the kingH4428, All that thou didst sendH7971 for to thy servantH5650 at the firstH7223 I will do; but this thingH1697 I may not do. And the messengersH4397 departed, and broughtH7725 him wordH1697 again. 10And Ben-hadadH1130 sentH7971 unto him, and saidH559, The godsH430 do so unto me, and more also, if the dustH6083 of SamariaH8111 shall suffice for handfulsH8168 for all the peopleH5971 that follow me. 11And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 answered and saidH559, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his armor boastH1984 himself as he that putteth it off. 12And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heardH8085 this message, as he wasH1961 drinkingH8354, he and the kingsH4428, in the pavilions, that he saidH559 unto his servantsH5650, SetH7760 yourselves in array. And they setH7760 themselves in array against the cityH5892.

13And, behold, a prophetH5030 came near unto AhabH256 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, Hast thou seenH7200 all this greatH1419 multitudeH1995? behold, I will deliver it into thy handH3027 this dayH3117; and thou shalt knowH3045 that I am Jehovah. 14And AhabH256 saidH559, By whom? And he saidH559, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, By the youngH5288 menH5288 of the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082. Then he saidH559, Who shall begin the battleH4421? And he answered, Thou. 15Then he musteredH6485 the youngH5288 menH5288 of the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082, and they wereH1961 twoH8147 hundredH3967 and thirty-two: and after them he musteredH6485 all the peopleH5971, even all the children of IsraelH3478, being sevenH7651 thousandH505.

16And they wentH3318 out at noonH6672. But Ben-hadadH1130 was drinkingH8354 himself drunkH8354 in the pavilions, he and the kingsH4428, the thirtyH7970 and twoH8147 kingsH4428 that helpedH5826 him. 17And the youngH5288 menH376 of the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082 wentH3318 out firstH7223; and Ben-hadadH1130 sentH7971 out, and they toldH5046 him, sayingH559, There are menH376 comeH3318 out from SamariaH8111. 18And he saidH559, Whether they are comeH3318 out for peaceH7965, take them aliveH2416; or whether they are comeH3318 out for warH4421, take them aliveH2416. 19So these wentH3318 out of the cityH5892, the youngH5288 menH5288 of the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082, and the armyH2428 which followed them. 20And they slew every oneH376 his manH376; and the Syrians fledH5127, and IsraelH3478 pursuedH7291 them: and Ben-hadadH1130 the kingH4428 of Syria escapedH4422 on a horseH5483 with horsemenH6571. 21And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 wentH3318 out, and smote the horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393, and slew the Syrians with a greatH1419 slaughterH4347.

22And the prophetH5030 cameH5927 near to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559 unto him, GoH5927, strengthenH2388 thyself, and mark, and seeH7200 what thou doest; for at the returnH8666 of the yearH8141 the kingH4428 of Syria will comeH5927 up against thee. 23And the servantsH5650 of the kingH4428 of Syria saidH559 unto him, Their godH430 is a godH430 of the hillsH2022; thereforeH3651 they were strongerH2388 than we: but let us fightH3898 against them in the plainH4334, and surely we shall be strongerH2388 than they. 24And do this thingH1697: take the kingsH4428 awayH5493, every manH376 out of his placeH4725, and putH7760 captains in their roomH4725; 25and numberH4487 thee an armyH2428, like the armyH2428 that thou hast lost, horseH5483 for horseH5483, and chariotH7393 for chariotH7393; and we will fightH3898 against them in the plainH4334, and surely we shall be strongerH2388 than they. And he hearkened unto their voiceH6963, and did soH3651.

26And it came to pass at the returnH8666 of the yearH8141, that Ben-hadadH1130 musteredH6485 the Syrians, and wentH5927 up to AphekH663, to fight against IsraelH3478. 27And the children of IsraelH3478 were musteredH6485, and were victualled, and went against them: and the children of IsraelH3478 encampedH2583 before them like twoH8147 little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filledH4390 the country. 28And a manH376 of GodH430 came near and spake unto the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, Because the Syrians have saidH559, Jehovah is a godH430 of the hillsH2022, but he is not a godH430 of the valleysH6010; therefore will I deliver all this greatH1419 multitudeH1995 into thy handH3027, and ye shall knowH3045 that I am Jehovah. 29And they encampedH2583 oneH259 over against the other sevenH7651 daysH3117. And so it wasH1961, that in the seventhH7637 dayH3117 the battleH4421 wasH1961 joined; and the children of IsraelH3478 slew of the Syrians a hundredH3967 thousandH505 footmen in oneH259 dayH3117. 30But the rest fledH5127 to AphekH663, into the cityH5892; and the wallH2346 fellH5307 upon twentyH6242 and sevenH7651 thousandH505 menH376 that were leftH3498. And Ben-hadadH1130 fledH5127, and cameH935 into the cityH5892, into an innerH2315 chamberH2315.

31And his servantsH5650 saidH559 unto him, Behold now, we have heardH8085 that the kingsH4428 of the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 are merciful kingsH4428: let us, we pray thee, putH7760 sackclothH8242 on our loinsH4975, and ropesH2256 upon our headsH7218, and goH3318 out to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478: peradventure he will save thy lifeH5315. 32So they girdedH2296 sackclothH8242 on their loinsH4975, and put ropesH2256 on their headsH7218, and cameH935 to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559, Thy servantH5650 Ben-hadadH1130 saith, I pray thee, let me liveH2421. And he saidH559, Is he yetH5750 aliveH2416? he is my brotherH251. 33Now the menH376 observed diligently, and hasted to catch whether it were his mind; and they saidH559, Thy brotherH251 Ben-hadadH1130. Then he saidH559, GoH3318 ye, bringH935 him. Then Ben-hadadH1130 cameH935 forthH3318 to him; and he caused him to comeH935 up into the chariotH4818. 34And Ben-hadad saidH559 unto him, The citiesH5892 which my fatherH1 tookH3947 from thy fatherH1 I will restoreH7725; and thou shalt makeH7760 streetsH2351 for thee in DamascusH1834, as my fatherH1 madeH3772 in SamariaH8111. And I, saidH559 Ahab, will let thee goH7971 with this covenantH1285. So he madeH3772 a covenantH1285 with him, and let him goH7971.

35And a certain manH376 of the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 saidH559 unto his fellow by the wordH1697 of Jehovah, Smite me, I pray thee. And the manH376 refusedH3985 to smite him. 36Then saidH559 he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voiceH6963 of Jehovah, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lionH738 shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lionH738 foundH4672 him, and slew him. 37Then he foundH4672 another manH376, and saidH559, Smite me, I pray thee. And the manH376 smote him, smiting and wounding him. 38So the prophetH5030 departed, and waited for the kingH4428 by the wayH1870, and disguisedH2664 himself with his headband over his eyesH5869. 39And as the kingH4428 passedH5674 by, he criedH6817 unto the kingH4428; and he saidH559, Thy servantH5650 wentH3318 out into the midstH7130 of the battleH4421; and, behold, a manH376 turnedH5493 asideH5493, and broughtH935 a manH376 unto me, and saidH559, KeepH8104 this manH376: if by any means he beH1961 missingH6485, then shall thy lifeH5315 beH1961 for his lifeH5315, or else thou shalt pay a talentH3603 of silverH3701. 40And as thy servantH5650 was busy hereH2008 and there, he was gone. And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559 unto him, SoH3651 shall thy judgmentH4941 beH1961; thyself hast decided it. 41And he hasted, and took the headband awayH5493 from his eyesH5869; and the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 discerned him that he was of the prophetsH5030. 42And he saidH559 unto him, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, Because thou hast let goH7971 out of thy handH3027 the manH376 whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore thy lifeH5315 shall goH7971 for his lifeH5315, and thy peopleH5971 for his peopleH5971. 43And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 wentH935 to his houseH1004 heavy and displeased, and cameH935 to SamariaH8111.
