1 Kings 13
American Standard Version
1And, behold, there cameH935 a manH376 of GodH430 out of JudahH3063 by the wordH1697 of Jehovah unto Beth-el: and JeroboamH3379 was standingH5975 by the altarH4196 to burn incenseH6999. 2And he cried against the altarH4196 by the wordH1697 of Jehovah, and saidH559, O altarH4196, altarH4196, thusH3541 saith Jehovah: Behold, a sonH1121 shall be bornH3205 unto the houseH1004 of DavidH1732, JosiahH2977 by nameH8034; and upon thee shall he sacrificeH2076 the priestsH3548 of the highH1116 placesH1116 that burnH8313 incenseH6999 upon thee, and men’sH120 bonesH6106 shall they burnH8313 upon thee. 3And he gaveH5414 a signH4159 the same dayH3117, sayingH559, This is the signH4159 which Jehovah hath spokenH1696: Behold, the altarH4196 shall be rent, and the ashesH1880 that are upon it shall be pouredH8210 out. 4And it came to pass, when the kingH4428 heardH8085 the sayingH559 of the manH376 of GodH430, which he cried against the altarH4196 in Beth-el, that JeroboamH3379 put forthH7971 his handH3027 from the altarH4196, sayingH559, Lay hold on him. And his handH3027, which he put forthH7971 against him, driedH3001 up, so that he could not draw it backH7725 again to him. 5The altarH4196 also was rent, and the ashesH1880 pouredH8210 out from the altarH4196, according to the signH4159 which the manH376 of GodH430 had givenH5414 by the wordH1697 of Jehovah. 6And the kingH4428 answered and saidH559 unto the manH376 of GodH430, EntreatH2470 now the favor of Jehovah thy GodH430, and prayH6419 for me, that my handH3027 may beH1961 restoredH7725 me again. And the manH376 of GodH430 entreated Jehovah, and the king’sH4428 handH3027 wasH1961 restoredH7725 him again, and becameH1961 as it wasH1961 before. 7And the kingH4428 saidH1696 unto the manH376 of GodH430, ComeH935 home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will giveH5414 thee a reward. 8And the manH376 of GodH430 saidH559 unto the kingH4428, If thou wilt giveH5414 me halfH2677 thy houseH1004, I will not goH935 in with thee, neither will I eatH398 breadH3899 nor drinkH8354 waterH4325 in this placeH4725; 9for soH3651 was it charged me by the wordH1697 of Jehovah, sayingH559, Thou shalt eatH398 no breadH3899, nor drinkH8354 waterH4325, neither returnH7725 by the wayH1870 that thou camest. 10So he wentH935 another wayH1870, and returnedH7725 not by the wayH1870 that he cameH935 to Beth-el.
11Now there dweltH3427 an old prophetH5030 in Beth-el; and oneH259 of his sonsH1121 cameH935 and told him all the worksH4639 that the manH376 of GodH430 had done that dayH3117 in Beth-el: the wordsH1697 which he had spokenH1696 unto the kingH4428, them also they told unto their fatherH1. 12And their fatherH1 saidH1696 unto them, What wayH1870 wentH1980 he? Now his sonsH1121 had seenH7200 what wayH1870 the manH376 of GodH430 wentH1980, that cameH935 from JudahH3063. 13And he saidH559 unto his sonsH1121, SaddleH2280 me the ass. So they saddledH2280 him the ass; and he rodeH7392 thereon. 14And he wentH935 after the manH376 of GodH430, and foundH4672 him sittingH3427 under an oakH424; and he saidH559 unto him, Art thou the manH376 of GodH430 that camest from JudahH3063? And he saidH559, I am. 15Then he saidH559 unto him, Come home with me, and eatH398 breadH3899. 16And he saidH559, I may not returnH7725 with thee, nor goH935 in with thee; neither will I eatH398 breadH3899 nor drinkH8354 waterH4325 with thee in this placeH4725: 17for it was said to me by the wordH1697 of Jehovah, Thou shalt eatH398 no breadH3899 nor drinkH8354 waterH4325 there, nor turnH7725 again to goH1980 by the wayH1870 that thou camest. 18And he saidH559 unto him, I alsoH1571 am a prophetH5030 as thou art; and an angelH4397 spake unto me by the wordH1697 of Jehovah, sayingH559, BringH7725 him backH7725 with thee into thy houseH1004, that he may eatH398 breadH3899 and drinkH8354 waterH4325. But he lied unto him. 19So he wentH7725 backH7725 with him, and did eatH398 breadH3899 in his houseH1004, and drankH8354 waterH4325.
20And it came to pass, as they satH3427 at the tableH7979, that the wordH1697 of Jehovah came unto the prophetH5030 that broughtH7725 him backH7725; 21and he cried unto the manH376 of GodH430 that cameH935 from JudahH3063, sayingH559, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, Forasmuch as thou hast been disobedientH4784 unto the mouthH6310 of Jehovah, and hast not keptH8104 the commandmentH4687 which Jehovah thy GodH430 commandedH6680 thee, 22but camest backH7725, and hast eatenH398 breadH3899 and drunkH8354 waterH4325 in the placeH4725 of which he saidH1696 to thee, EatH398 no breadH3899, and drinkH8354 no waterH4325; thy body shall not comeH935 unto the sepulchre of thy fathersH1. 23And it came to pass, after he had eatenH398 breadH3899, and after he had drunkH8354, that he saddledH2280 for him the ass, to wit, for the prophetH5030 whom he had broughtH7725 backH7725. 24And when he wasH1961 gone, a lionH738 met him by the wayH1870, and slew him: and his body wasH1961 castH7993 in the wayH1870, and the ass stoodH5975 by it; the lionH738 also stoodH5975 by the body. 25And, behold, menH376 passedH5674 by, and sawH7200 the body castH7993 in the wayH1870, and the lionH738 standingH5975 by the body; and they cameH935 and told it in the cityH5892 whereH834 the oldH2205 prophetH5030 dweltH3427.
26And whenH834 the prophetH5030 that broughtH7725 him backH7725 from the wayH1870 heardH8085 thereof, he saidH559, It is the manH376 of GodH430, who was disobedientH4784 unto the mouthH6310 of Jehovah: therefore Jehovah hath delivered him unto the lionH738, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the wordH1697 of Jehovah, which he spake unto him. 27And he spake to his sonsH1121, sayingH559, SaddleH2280 me the ass. And they saddledH2280 it. 28And he went and foundH4672 his body castH7993 in the wayH1870, and the ass and the lionH738 standingH5975 by the body: the lionH738 had not eatenH398 the body, nor torn the ass. 29And the prophetH5030 tookH5375 up the body of the manH376 of GodH430, and laid it upon the ass, and broughtH935 it backH7725; and he cameH935 to the cityH5892 of the oldH2205 prophetH5030, to mournH5594, and to buryH6912 him. 30And he laid his body in his own graveH6913; and they mournedH5594 over him, saying, AlasH1945, my brotherH251! 31And it came to pass, after he had buriedH6912 him, that he spake to his sonsH1121, sayingH559, When I amH1961 deadH4191, then buryH6912 me in the sepulchre wherein the manH376 of GodH430 is buriedH6912; lay my bonesH6106 beside his bonesH6106. 32For the saying which he cried by the wordH1697 of Jehovah against the altarH4196 in Beth-el, and against all the housesH1004 of the highH1116 placesH1116 which are in the citiesH5892 of SamariaH8111, shall surely come to pass.
33After this thingH1697 JeroboamH3379 returnedH7725 not from his evilH7451 wayH1870, but madeH6213 again from among all the peopleH5971 priestsH3548 of the highH1116 placesH1116: whosoever would, he consecrated him, that there might beH1961 priestsH3548 of the highH1116 placesH1116. 34And this thingH1697 becameH1961 sinH2403 unto the houseH1004 of JeroboamH3379, even to cut it off, and to destroyH8045 it from off the faceH6440 of the earthH127.
