1 Kings 20
Revised Version 1895
1And Ben-hadadH1130 the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 gatheredH6908 allH3605 his hostH2426 togetherH6908: and there were thirtyH7970 and twoH8147 kingsH4428 with him, and horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393: and he wentH5927 upH5927 and besieged SamariaH8111, and foughtH3898 againstH5921 it. 2And he sentH7971 messengersH4397 to AhabH256 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, intoH413 the cityH5892, and saidH413 unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad, 3Thy silverH3701 and thy goldH2091 is mine; thy wivesH802 also and thy childrenH1121, evenH3541 the goodliest, are mine. 4And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 answeredH559 and saidH559, It is according to thy sayingH559, my lordH113, O kingH4428; I am thine, and allH3605 that I have. 5And the messengersH4397 cameH413 againH7725, and saidH559, ThusH3541 speaketh Ben-hadadH1130, sayingH559, I sentH7971 indeedH3588 unto thee, sayingH559, Thou shalt deliverH5414 meH413 thy silverH3701, and thy goldH2091, and thy wivesH802, and thy childrenH1121; 6but I will sendH7971 my servantsH5650 unto thee tomorrowH4279 aboutH1961 this time, and they shall searchH2664 thine houseH1004, and the housesH1004 of thy servantsH5650; and it shall be, that whatsoeverH3605 is pleasantH4261 in thine eyesH5869, they shall putH7760 it in their handH3027, and takeH3947 it awayH7971. 7Then the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 calledH7121 allH3605 the eldersH2205 of the landH776, and saidH559, Mark, I prayH4994 youH3588, and seeH7200 howH3588 this manH2205 seeketh mischief: for he sentH7971 unto meH413 for my wivesH802, and for my childrenH1121, and for my silverH3701, and for my goldH2091; and I denied him notH3808. 8And allH3605 the eldersH2205 and allH3605 the peopleH5971 saidH559 unto him, Hearken thou notH3808, neitherH3808 consentH14. 9Wherefore he saidH559 unto the messengersH4397 of Ben-hadadH1130, TellH559 my lordH113 the kingH4428, AllH3605 that thou didst sendH7971 for to thy servantH5650 at the firstH7223 I will doH6213: but this thingH1697 I may notH3808 doH6213. And the messengersH4397 departed, and broughtH7725 him wordH1697 againH7725. 10And Ben-hadadH1130 sentH7971 unto him, and saidH559, The godsH430 doH6213 soH6213 unto meH413, and moreH3254 also, ifH518 the dustH6083 of SamariaH8111 shall suffice for handfulsH8168 for allH3605 the peopleH5971 that followH7272 meH413. 11And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 answeredH559 and saidH559, tellH559 him, LetH408 notH408 him that girdeth on his armour boastH1984 himself as he that putteth it offH4428. 12And it cameH1961 to passH1961, when Ben-hadad heardH8085 this messageH1697, as he was drinkingH8354, he and the kingsH4428, in the pavilions, that he saidH559 unto his servantsH5650, SetH7760 yourselves in array. And they setH7760 themselvesH5921 in array againstH5921 the cityH5892. 13And, beholdH2009, a prophetH5030 cameH5066 nearH5066 unto AhabH256 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, Hast thou seenH7200 allH3605 this greatH1419 multitudeH1995? beholdH2009; I will deliverH5414 it intoH413 thine handH3027 this dayH3117; and thou shalt knowH3045 that I am the LORDH3068. 14And AhabH256 saidH559, By whomH4310? And he saidH559, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, By the youngH5288 menH5288 of the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082. Then he saidH559, Who shall beginH631 the battleH4421? And he answeredH559, Thou. 15Then he musteredH6485 the youngH5288 menH5288 of the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082, and they were twoH8147 hundredH3967 and thirtyH7970 twoH8147: and afterH310 them he musteredH6485 allH3605 the peopleH5971, evenH853 allH3605 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, beingH1961 sevenH7651 thousandH505. 16And they wentH3318 outH3318 at noonH6672. But Ben-hadadH1130 was drinkingH8354 himselfH1931 drunkH8354 in the pavilions, he and the kingsH4428, the thirtyH7970 and twoH8147 kingsH4428 that helpedH5826 him. 17And the youngH5288 menH376 of the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082 wentH3318 outH3318 firstH7223; and Ben-hadadH1130 sentH7971 outH3318, and they toldH5046 him, sayingH559, There are menH376 comeH3318 outH3318 from SamariaH8111. 18And he saidH559, WhetherH518 they be comeH3318 outH3318 for peaceH7965, takeH3318 them aliveH2416; or whetherH518 they be comeH3318 outH3318 for warH4421, takeH3318 them aliveH2416. 19SoH4480 theseH428 wentH3318 outH3318 of the cityH5892, the youngH5288 menH5288 of the princesH8269 of the provincesH4082, and the armyH2428 whichH834 followedH310 them. 20And they slewH5221 everyH376 one his manH376; and the Syrians fledH5127, and IsraelH3478 pursuedH7291 them: and Ben-hadadH1130 the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 escapedH4422 on an horseH5483 with horsemenH6571. 21And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 wentH3318 outH3318, and smoteH5221 the horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393, and slewH5221 the Syrians with a greatH1419 slaughterH4347. 22And the prophetH5030 cameH5927 nearH5066 to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559 unto him, GoH5927, strengthenH2388 thyself, and mark, and seeH7200 whatH834 thou doest: for at the returnH8666 of the yearH8141 the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 will comeH5927 upH5927 againstH5921 thee. 23And the servantsH5650 of the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 saidH559 unto him, Their godH430 is a godH430 of the hillsH2022; therefore they were strongerH2388 thanH4480 weH518: but letH3808 usH413 fightH3898 againstH5921 them in the plainH4334, and surelyH518 weH518 shall be strongerH2388 thanH4480 they. 24And doH6213 this thingH1697; takeH5493 the kingsH4428 awayH5493, everyH376 manH376 outH4725 of his placeH4725, and putH7760 captainsH6346 in their roomH4725: 25and numberH4487 thee an armyH2428, like the armyH2428 that thou hast lostH5307, horseH5483 for horseH5483, and chariotH7393 for chariotH7393: and weH518 will fightH3898 againstH3898 them in the plainH4334, and surelyH518 weH518 shall be strongerH2388 thanH3808 they. And he hearkened unto their voiceH6963, and didH6213 soH3651. 26And it cameH1961 to passH1961 at the returnH8666 of the yearH8141, that Ben-hadadH1130 musteredH6485 the Syrians, and wentH5927 upH5927 to AphekH663, to fightH4421 againstH5973 IsraelH3478. 27And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 were musteredH6485, and were victualled, and wentH7125 againstH7125 them: and the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 encampedH2583 beforeH5048 them like twoH8147 littleH2835 flocksH2835 of kids; but the Syrians filledH4390 the countryH776. 28And a manH376 of GodH430 cameH5066 nearH5066 and spake unto the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, BecauseH3588 the Syrians have saidH559, The LORDH3068 is a godH430 of the hillsH2022, but he is notH3808 a godH430 of the valleysH6010; therefore will I deliverH5414 allH3605 this greatH1419 multitudeH1995 intoH413 thine handH3027, and ye shall knowH3045 that I am the LORDH3068. 29And they encampedH2583 one over againstH4421 the otherH259 sevenH7651 daysH3117. And soH1961 it was, that in the seventhH7637 dayH3117 the battleH4421 was joinedH7126; and the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 slewH5221 of the Syrians an hundredH3967 thousandH505 footmenH7273 in one dayH3117. 30But the restH3498 fledH5127 to AphekH663, intoH413 the cityH5892; and the wallH2346 fellH5307 uponH5921 twentyH6242 and sevenH7651 thousandH505 menH376 that were leftH3498. And Ben-hadadH1130 fledH5127, and cameH935 intoH413 the cityH5892, intoH413 an innerH2315 chamberH2315. 31And his servantsH5650 saidH559 unto him, BeholdH2009 nowH4994, weH3588 have heardH8085 that the kingsH4428 of the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 are merciful kingsH4428: letH4994 usH4994, weH3588 prayH4994 thee, putH7760 sackclothH8242 on our loinsH4975, and ropesH2256 uponH413 our headsH7218, and goH3318 outH3318 to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478: peradventure he will saveH5315 thy lifeH5315. 32SoH935 they girdedH2296 sackclothH8242 on their loinsH4975, and putH935 ropesH2256 on their headsH7218, and cameH935 to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, and saidH559, Thy servantH5650 Ben-hadadH1130 saith, I prayH4994 thee, letH4994 meH413 liveH2421. And he saidH559, Is he yet aliveH2416? he is my brotherH251. 33NowH935 the menH376 observed diligently, and hasted to catch whetherH4480 it were his mind; and they saidH559, Thy brotherH251 Ben-hadadH1130. Then he saidH559, GoH3318 ye, bringH935 him. Then Ben-hadadH1130 cameH935 forthH3318 to him; and he caused him to comeH935 upH5927 intoH413 the chariotH4818. 34And Ben-hadad saidH559 unto him, The citiesH5892 whichH834 my fatherH1 tookH3947 from thy fatherH1 I will restoreH7725; and thou shalt makeH7760 streetsH2351 for thee in DamascusH1834, as my fatherH1 madeH3772 in SamariaH8111. And I, saidH559 AhabH559, will letH7971 thee goH7971 with this covenantH1285. SoH3947 he madeH3772 a covenantH1285 with him, and letH7971 him goH7971. 35And a certainH259 manH376 of the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 saidH559 unto his fellowH376 by the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, SmiteH5221 meH413, I prayH4994 thee. And the manH376 refusedH3985 to smiteH5221 him. 36Then saidH559 he unto him, BecauseH3282 thou hast notH3808 obeyedH8085 the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068, beholdH2005, as soon as thou art departedH1980 from meH6963, a lionH738 shall slayH5221 thee. And as soon as he was departedH1980 from him, a lionH738 foundH4672 him, and slewH5221 him. 37Then he foundH4672 anotherH312 manH376, and saidH559, SmiteH5221 meH4994, I prayH4994 thee. And the manH376 smoteH5221 him, smitingH5221 and wounding him. 38SoH5975 the prophetH5030 departed, and waitedH5975 for the kingH4428 by the wayH1870, and disguisedH2664 himself with his headband over his eyesH5869. 39And as the kingH4428 passedH5674 by, he criedH6817 unto the kingH4428: and he saidH559, Thy servantH5650 wentH3318 outH3318 intoH413 the midstH7130 of the battleH4421; and, beholdH2009, a manH376 turnedH5493 asideH5493, and broughtH935 a manH376 unto meH413, and saidH559, KeepH8104 this manH376: ifH518 by anyH376 meansH518 he be missingH6485, then shall thy lifeH5315 be for his lifeH5315, or elseH176 thou shalt payH8254 a talentH3603 of silverH3701. 40And as thy servantH5650 was busy hereH2008 and there, he was goneH369. And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559 unto him, SoH3651 shall thy judgmentH4941 be; thyself hast decidedH559 it. 41And he hasted, and tookH5493 the headband awayH5493 from his eyesH5869; and the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 discerned him that he was of the prophetsH5030. 42And he saidH559 unto him, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, BecauseH3282 thou hast letH7971 goH7971 outH7971 of thy handH3027 the manH376 whom I had devotedH2764 to destruction, therefore thy lifeH5315 shall goH7971 for his lifeH5315, and thy peopleH5971 for his peopleH5971. 43And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 wentH935 to his houseH1004 heavy and displeased, and cameH935 to SamariaH8111.
