1 Samuel 21
Revised Version 1895
1Then cameH935 David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech cameH935 to meet David trembling, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee? 2And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto AhimelechH288 the priestH3548, The king hath commandedH559 meH413 a business, and hath saidH559 unto meH413, Let noH369 manH376 knowH854 anyH376 thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commandedH559 thee: and I have appointed the young menH376 to such and such a placeH935. 3Now therefore whatH834 is under thine hand? giveH6680 meH413 five loaves of bread in mine hand, or whatsoever there is present. 4And the priest answered DavidH3027, and said, There is noH4672 common breadH3899 underH8478 mineH8478 handH3027, but there is holy breadH3899; ifH176 only the young men have keptH5414 themselves from women. 5And DavidH1732 answeredH559 the priestH3548, and saidH559 unto him, Of a truth womenH802 have been keptH8104 from usH413 aboutH413 these three daysH369; When I cameH413 outH413, the vessels of the youngH5288 menH5288 were holyH6944, thoughH3588 it was but a commonH2455 journey; howH3588 muchH3027 moreH369 then today shall their vessels be holyH6944? 6SoH1961 the priestH3548 gaveH559 him holyH6944 bread: for there was noH518 bread there but the shewbread, that was takenH1961 from beforeH3117 the LORD, to putH3318 hot bread in the dayH3117 when it was takenH1961 awayH3318. 7NowH1961 a certain man of the servantsH8033 of Saul was there that dayH3117, detained beforeH6440 the LORDH3068; and his nameH518 was Doeg the Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belongedH1961 to Saul. 8And DavidH3117 said unto Ahimelech, And is there notH6113 hereH8033 underH6440 thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with meH6440, becauseH834 the king’s business required haste. 9And the priest saidH559, The swordH2719 of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slowest in the vale of Elah, beholdH3808, it is hereH6311 wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: ifH3588 thou wilt takeH3947 that, takeH3947 it: for there is noH3808 otherH6311 save that hereH6311. And DavidH1732 saidH559, There is noneH3808 like that; giveH1961 it meH3947. 10And DavidH1732 arose, and fled that day for fear of SaulH559, and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11And the servants of AchishH397 saidH413 unto him, Is notH1732 this DavidH1732 the kingH4428 of the landH6440? didH3117 they notH1732 sing one to another of him in dances, saying, SaulH7586 hath slain his thousands, and DavidH1732 his ten thousands? 12And DavidH1732 laid upH4428 theseH2088 words in his heart, and was sore afraid of AchishH397 the kingH4428 of Gath. 13And he changed his behaviour beforeH6440 them, and feigned himselfH3824 mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and letH7760 his spittle fall downH6440 uponH7760 his beard. 14Then saidH413 Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye seeH5869 the manH8179 is mad: wherefore then have ye broughtH3381 him to meH413? 15DoH4100 I lack madH7696 menH376, that ye have broughtH935 this fellowH376 to play the madH7696 manH376 in my presence? shall this fellowH376 comeH935 intoH413 my house?
