The King’s Dream

1Now in the secondשְׁתַּ֗יִםshe.Ta.yimH8147yearוּבִשְׁנַ֣תu.vish.NatH8141of the reignלְמַלְכוּת֙le.mal.KhutH4438of Nebuchadnezzarנְבֻֽכַדְנֶצַּ֔רne.vu.khad.ne.TzarH5019,Nebuchadnezzarנְבֻֽכַדְנֶצַּ֖רne.vu.khad.ne.TzarH5019hadחָלַ֥םcha.LamH2492dreamsחֲלֹמ֑וֹתcha.lo.MotH2472;and his spiritרוּח֔וֹru.ChoH7307was troubledוַתִּתְפָּ֣עֶםva.tit.Pa.'emH6470and hissleepוּשְׁנָת֖וֹu.she.na.ToH8142leftנִהְיְתָ֥הnih.ye.TahH1961him.

2Then the kingהַ֠מֶּלֶךְHa.Me.lekhH4428gaveH559ordersH559to callלִקְרֹ֨אlik.Ro'H7121in thesoothsayerH2748priestsH2748,the conjurersוְלָֽאַשָּׁפִ֗יםve.la.'a.sha.FimH825,the sorcerersוְלַֽמְכַשְּׁפִים֙ve.lam.kha.she.FimH3784, and theChaldeansוְלַכַּשְׂדִּ֔יםve.la.kas.DimH3778, totellלְהַגִּ֥ידle.ha.GidH5046the kingלַמֶּ֖לֶךְla.Me.lekhH4428his dreamsחֲלֹמֹתָ֑יוcha.lo.mo.TavH2472.So they cameH935inH935and stoodוַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּvai.ya.'am.DuH5975beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440the kingהַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ha.Me.lekhH4428.

3The kingהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Ihadחָלָ֑מְתִּיcha.La.me.tiH2492a dreamחֲל֣וֹםcha.LomH2472,and my spiritרוּחִ֔יru.ChiH7307is anxiousוַתִּפָּ֣עֶםva.ti.Pa.'emH6470tounderstandלָדַ֖עַתla.Da.'atH3045the dreamהַחֲלֽוֹם׃ha.cha.LomH2472.”

4Then the Chaldeansהַכַּשְׂדִּ֛יםha.kas.DimH3778spokeוַֽיְדַבְּר֧וּvay.da.be.RuH1696to the kingלַמֶּ֖לֶךְla.Me.lekhH4428inAramaicאֲרָמִ֑ית'a.ra.MitH762: “O kingמַלְכָּא֙mal.Ka'H4430,liveחֱיִ֔יche.YiH2418foreverלְעָלְמִ֣יןle.'al.MinH5957!Tellאֱמַ֥ר'e.MarH560the dreamחֶלְמָ֛אchel.Ma'H2493to your servantsלְעַבְדָ֖ךְle.'av.da.yikhH5649,and we will declareH2331the interpretationוּפִשְׁרָ֥אu.fish.Ra'H6591.”

5The kingמַלְכָּא֙mal.Ka'H4430repliedעָנֵ֤ה'a.NehH6032to the Chaldeansלְכַשְׂדָּאֵ֔יle.khas.da.'eiH3779, “The commandמִלְּתָ֖אmi.le.Ta'H4406from me is firmאַזְדָּ֑א'az.Da'H230:ifהֵ֣ןhenH2006you do not makeתְהֽוֹדְעוּנַּ֙נִי֙te.hod.'u.Na.niH3046knownH3046to me the dreamחֶלְמָ֣אchel.Ma'H2493and its interpretationוּפִשְׁרֵ֔הּu.fish.RehH6591, you will betornתִּתְעַבְד֔וּןtit.'av.DunH5648limbהַדָּמִין֙ha.da.MinH1917from limb and your housesוּבָתֵּיכ֖וֹןu.va.tei.KhonH1005will be turnedיִתְּשָׂמֽוּן׃yi.te.sa.MunH7761into a rubbishH5122heapH5122.

6But ifH2006you declareH2331the dreamחֶלְמָ֤אchel.Ma'H2493and its interpretationוּפִשְׁרֵהּ֙u.fish.RehH6591,you will receiveתְּקַבְּל֖וּןte.ka.be.LunH6902from megiftsמַתְּנָ֤ןma.te.NanH4978and a rewardוּנְבִזְבָּה֙u.ne.viz.BahH5023and greatשַׂגִּ֔יאsa.Gi'H7690honorוִיקָ֣רvi.KarH3367;thereforeH3861declareH2331to me the dreamחֶלְמָ֥אchel.Ma'H2493and its interpretationוּפִשְׁרֵ֖הּu.fish.RehH6591.”

7They answeredעֲנ֥וֹa.NoH6032a secondH8579timeH8579and saidוְאָמְרִ֑יןve.'a.me.RinH560, “Let the kingמַלְכָּ֕אmal.Ka'H4430tellיֵאמַ֥רye.MarH560the dreamחֶלְמָ֛אchel.Ma'H2493to his servantsלְעַבְד֖וֹהִיle.'av.Do.hiH5649,and we will declareH2331the interpretationוּפִשְׁרָ֥הu.fish.Rah'H6591.”

8The kingמַלְכָּא֙mal.Ka'H4430repliedעָנֵ֤ה'a.NehH6032, “I knowיָדַ֣עya.Da'H3046for certainיַצִּיב֙ya.TzivH3330that you are tryingH2084toH2084buyH2084timeעִדָּנָ֖א'i.da.Na'H5732,becauseקֳבֵל֙ko.VelH6903 H1768you have perceivedחֲזֵית֔וֹןcha.zei.TonH2370that the commandמִלְּתָֽא׃mi.le.Ta'H4406from me is firmאַזְדָּ֖א'az.Da'H230,

10The Chaldeansכַשְׂדָּאֵ֤יkhas.da.iH3779answeredעֲנ֨וֹa.NoH6032the kingמַלְכָּא֙mal.Ka'H4430and saidוְאָ֣מְרִ֔יןve.'A.me.RinH560, “ThereH383isH383noלָֽא־la'-H3809personאֲנָשׁ֙'a.NashH606on earthיַבֶּשְׁתָּ֔אya.besh.Ta'H3007whoדִּ֚יdiH1768couldיוּכַ֖לyu.KhalH3202declareH2331the matterמִלַּ֣תmi.LatH4406to the kingמַלְכָּ֔אmal.Ka'H4430,becauseקֳבֵ֗ל דִּ֚יko.Vel diH6903 H1768noכָּל־ לָ֣אkol- la'H3606 H3809greatרַ֣בravH7229kingמֶ֙לֶךְ֙Me.lekhH4430or rulerוְשַׁלִּ֔יטve.sha.LitH7990has everaskedשְׁאֵ֔לshe.'ElH7593anythingמִלָּ֤הmi.LahH4406like thisכִדְנָה֙khid.NahH1836of anyלְכָל־le.kholH3606soothsayerH2749priestH2749,sorcererוְאָשַׁ֥ףve.'a.ShafH826,or Chaldeanוְכַשְׂדָּֽי׃ve.khas.DaiH3779.

11Moreover, the thingוּמִלְּתָ֨אu.mi.le.Ta'H4406whichדִֽי־di-H1768the kingמַלְכָּ֤הmal.Kah'H4430demandsשָׁאֵל֙sha.'ElH7593is difficultיַקִּירָ֔הya.ki.RahH3358,and thereאִיתַ֔י'i.TaiH383isאִיתֽוֹהִי׃'i.To.hiH383noH3809oneH321elseH321whoדִּ֥יdiH1768could declareH2331itto the kingמַלְכָּ֑אmal.Ka'H4430exceptלָהֵ֣ןla.HenH3861godsאֱלָהִ֔ין'e.la.HinH426,whoseדִּ֚יdiH1768dwellingמְדָ֣רְה֔וֹןme.Da.re.HonH4070placeH4094is not with mortalfleshבִּשְׂרָ֖אbis.Ra'H1321.”

12Becauseקֳבֵ֣לko.VelH6903of thisדְּנָ֔הde.NahH1836,the kingמַלְכָּ֕אmal.Ka'H4430becameH1149angryH1149and extremelyשַׂגִּ֑יאsa.Gi'H7690furiousוּקְצַ֣ףu.ke.TzafH7108,and he gaveH560ordersH560to killלְה֣וֹבָדָ֔הle.Hoa.DahH7allלְכֹ֖לle.KholH3606the wiseחַכִּימֵ֥יcha.ki.MeiH2445menH2445of Babylonבָבֶֽל׃va.VelH895.

13So thedecreeוְדָתָ֣אve.da.Ta'H1882was issuedנֶפְקַ֔תnef.KatH5312that the wiseוְחַכִּֽימַיָּ֖אve.cha.ki.mai.Ya'H2445menH2445be killedמִֽתְקַטְּלִ֑יןmit.ka.te.LinH6992;and they lookedH1156forH1156Danielדָּנִיֵּ֥אלda.ni.YelH1841and his friendsוְחַבְר֖וֹהִיve.chav.Ro.hiH2269, tokillלְהִתְקְטָלָֽה׃ פle.hit.ke.ta.LahH6992them.

14Thenבֵּאדַ֣יִןbe.Da.yinH116Danielדָּנִיֵּ֗אלda.ni.YelH1841repliedהֲתִיב֙ha.TivH8421with discretionעֵטָ֣א'e.Ta'H5843and discernmentוּטְעֵ֔םu.te.'EmH2942toAriochלְאַרְי֕וֹךְle.'ar.YokhH746,the captainרַב־rav-H7229of the king’sמַלְכָּ֑אmal.Ka'H4430bodyguardטַבָּחַיָּ֖אta.ba.chai.Ya'H2877,whoH1768had goneH5312outH5312to killלְקַטָּלָ֔הle.ka.ta.LahH6992the wiseלְחַכִּימֵ֖יle.cha.ki.MeiH2445menH2445of Babylonבָּבֶֽל׃ba.VelH895;

15he saidוְאָמַ֗רve.'a.MarH560to Ariochלְאַרְיוֹךְ֙le.'ar.yoKhH746,the king’sמַלְכָּ֔אmal.Ka'H4430officerשַׁלִּיטָ֣אsha.li.Ta'H7990, “For whatH4101reasonעַל־'al-H5922 H4101is the decreeדָתָ֛אda.Ta'H1882from the kingמַלְכָּ֑אmal.Ka'H4430soharshמְהַחְצְפָ֖הme.hach.tze.FahH2685?”Thenאֱדַ֣יִן'e.Da.yinH116Ariochאַרְי֖וֹךְ'ar.YokhH746informedהוֹדַ֥עho.Da'H3046Danielלְדָנִיֵּֽאל׃le.da.ni.YelH1841of the matterמִלְּתָ֔אmi.le.Ta'H4406.

16So Danielוְדָ֣נִיֵּ֔אלve.Da.ni.YelH1841wentH5954inH5954and requestedוּבְעָ֣הu.ve.'AhH1156of the kingמַלְכָּ֑אmal.Ka'H4430that he would giveיִנְתֵּן־yin.ten-H5415him a graceH2166periodH2166,so that he might declareH2331the interpretationוּפִשְׁרָ֖אu.fish.Ra'H6591to the kingלְמַלְכָּֽא׃ פle.mal.Ka'H4430.

17Thenאֱדַ֥יִן'e.Da.yinH116Danielדָּֽנִיֵּ֖אלda.ni.YelH1841wentאֲזַ֑ל'a.ZalH236to his houseלְבַיְתֵ֣הּle.vay.TehH1005and informedהוֹדַֽע׃ho.Da'H3046his friendsחַבְר֖וֹהִיchav.Ro.hiH2269,Hananiahוְ֠לַחֲנַנְיָהVe.la.cha.nan.yahH2608,MishaelH4331and Azariahוַעֲזַרְיָ֛הva.'a.zar.YahH5839,about the matterמִלְּתָ֥אmi.le.Ta'H4406,

18so that they mightrequestלְמִבְעֵא֙le.miv.'E'H1156compassionוְרַחֲמִ֗יןve.ra.cha.MinH7359from the Godאֱלָ֣הּ'e.LahH426of heavenשְׁמַיָּ֔אshe.mai.Ya'H8065concerningעַל־'al-H5922thisדְּנָ֑הde.NahH1836secretרָזָ֖הra.Zah'H7328,soH1768thatH1768Danielדָּנִיֵּ֣אלda.ni.YelH1841and his friendsוְחַבְר֔וֹהִיve.chav.Ro.hiH2269would not bekilledיְהֹֽבְדוּן֙ye.hoe.DunH7with the restשְׁאָ֖רshe.'ArH7606of the wiseחַכִּימֵ֥יcha.ki.MeiH2445menH2445of Babylonבָבֶֽל׃va.VelH895.

20Danielדָֽנִיֵּאל֙da.ni.yeLH1841saidוְאָמַ֔רve.'a.MarH560, “May the nameשְׁמֵ֤הּshe.MehH8036of Godאֱלָהָא֙'e.la.Ha'H426beblessedמְבָרַ֔ךְme.va.RakhH1289foreverעָלְמָ֖א'al.Ma'H5957and everעָלְמָ֑א'al.Ma'H5957, Forwisdomחָכְמְתָ֛אcha.khe.me.Ta'H2452and powerוּגְבוּרְתָ֖אu.ge.vu.re.Ta'H1370belong to Him.

21It is He whochangesמְהַשְׁנֵ֤אme.hash.Ne'H8133the timesעִדָּנַיָּא֙'i.da.nai.Ya'H5732and the periodsוְזִמְנַיָּ֔אve.zim.nai.Ya'H2166; Heremovesמְהַעְדֵּ֥הme.ha'.DehH5709kingsמַלְכִ֖יןmal.KhinH4430and appointsוּמְהָקֵ֣יםu.me.ha.KeimH6966kingsמַלְכִ֑יןmal.KhinH4430;He givesיָהֵ֤בya.HevH3052wisdomחָכְמְתָא֙cha.khe.me.Ta'H2452to wiseלְחַכִּימִ֔יןle.cha.ki.MinH2445menH2445,And knowledgeוּמַנְדְּעָ֖אu.man.de.'A'H4486topeople of understandingבִינָֽה׃vi.NahH999.

22It is He whorevealsגָּלֵ֥אga.Le'H1541the profoundעַמִּיקָתָ֖א'a.mi.ka.Ta'H5994and hiddenH5642thingsH5642;He knowsיָדַע֙ya.Da'H3046whatמָ֣הmahH4101is in the darknessבַחֲשׁוֹכָ֔אva.cha.sho.Kha'H2816, And thelightוּנְהוֹרָ֖אu.ne.hi.ra'H5094dwellsשְׁרֵֽא׃she.Re'H8271with Him.

24Thereuponקֳבֵ֣ל דְּנָ֗הko.Vel de.NahH6903 H1836,Danielדָּֽנִיֵּאל֙da.ni.yeLH1841wentעַ֣ל'alH5954to Ariochאַרְי֔וֹךְ'ar.YokhH746,whomדִּ֚יdiH1768the kingמַלְכָּ֔אmal.Ka'H4430had appointedמַנִּ֣יma.NiH4483to killלְהוֹבָדָ֖הle.hoa.DahH7the wiseלְחַכִּימֵ֣יle.cha.ki.MeiH2445menH2445of Babylonבָבֶ֑לva.VelH895;he wentאֲזַ֣ל׀'a.ZalH236and saidאֲמַר־'a.mar-H560thisוְכֵ֣ןve.KhenH3652to him: “Do not killתְּהוֹבֵ֔דte.ho.VedH7the wiseלְחַכִּימֵ֤יle.cha.ki.MeiH2445menH2445of Babylonבָבֶל֙va.VelH895!Takeהַעֵ֙לְנִי֙ha.'E.le.niH5954meinto the king’sמַלְכָּ֔אmal.Ka'H4430presenceקֳדָ֣םko.DamH6925,and I will declareH2331the interpretationוּפִשְׁרָ֖אu.fish.Ra'H6591to the kingלְמַלְכָּ֥אle.mal.Ka'H4430.”

25Thenאֱדַ֤יִן'e.Da.yinH116Ariochאַרְיוֹךְ֙'ar.yoKhH746hurriedlyבְּהִתְבְּהָלָ֔הbe.hit.be.ha.LahH927broughtהַנְעֵ֥לhan.'ElH5954Danielלְדָנִיֵּ֖אלle.da.ni.YelH1841into the king’sמַלְכָּ֑אmal.Ka'H4430presenceקֳדָ֣םko.DamH6925and spokeאֲמַר־'a.mar-H560to him asH3652followsוְכֵ֣ןve.KhenH3652: “I have foundהַשְׁכַּ֤חַתhash.Ka.chatH7912a manגְּבַר֙ge.VarH1400amongמִן־min-H4481theexilesגָֽלוּתָא֙ga.lu.Ta'H1123 H1547from Judahיְה֔וּדye.HudH3061whoH1768can makeיְהוֹדַֽע׃ye.ho.Da'H3046the interpretationפִשְׁרָ֖אfish.Ra'H6591knownH3046to the kingלְמַלְכָּ֥אle.mal.Ka'H4430!”

26The kingמַלְכָּא֙mal.Ka'H4430saidוְאָמַ֣רve.'a.MarH560to Danielלְדָנִיֵּ֔אלle.da.ni.YelH1841,whoseדִּ֥יdiH1768nameשְׁמֵ֖הּshe.MehH8036wasBelteshazzarבֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּ֑רbe.le.te.sha.TzarH1096, “Are you ableכָּהֵ֗לka.HelH3546to makeלְהוֹדָעֻתַ֛נִיle.ho.da.'u.Ta.niH3046knownH3046to me the dreamחֶלְמָ֥אchel.Ma'H2493whichדִֽי־di-H1768I have seenחֲזֵ֖יתcha.ZeitH2370and its interpretationוּפִשְׁרֵֽהּ׃u.fish.RehH6591?”
