1 Kings 11:13-36
13Howbeit I will not rend awayH7167 all the kingdomH4467; but I will giveH5414 oneH259 tribeH7626 to thy sonH1121, for DavidH1732 my servant’sH5650 sakeH4616, and for Jerusalem’s sakeH4616 which I have chosenH977.
14And Jehovah raisedH6965 up an adversaryH7854 unto SolomonH8010, HadadH1908 the EdomiteH130: he was of the king’sH4428 seedH2233 in EdomH123. 15For it came to pass, when DavidH1732 wasH1961 in EdomH123, and JoabH3097 the captain of the hostH6635 wasH1961 goneH5927 up to buryH6912 the slain, and had smitten every maleH2145 in EdomH123 16(for JoabH3097 and all IsraelH3478 remainedH3427 there sixH8337 monthsH2320, until he had cutH3772 off every maleH2145 in EdomH123); 17that HadadH1908 fledH1272, he and certain EdomitesH130 of his father’sH1 servantsH5650 with him, to goH935 into EgyptH4714, HadadH1908 being yet a littleH6996 child. 18And they aroseH6965 out of MidianH4080, and cameH935 to ParanH6290; and they tookH3947 menH376 with them out of ParanH6290, and they cameH935 to EgyptH4714, unto PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714, who gaveH5414 him a houseH1004, and appointed him victuals, and gaveH5414 him landH776. 19And HadadH1908 foundH4672 great favorH2580 in the sight of PharaohH6547, so that he gaveH5414 him to wifeH802 the sisterH269 of his ownH5869 wifeH802, the sisterH269 of TahpenesH8472 the queen. 20And the sisterH269 of TahpenesH8472 bare him GenubathH1592 his sonH1121, whom TahpenesH8472 weanedH1580 in Pharaoh’s houseH1004; and GenubathH1592 wasH1961 in Pharaoh’s houseH1004 among the sonsH1121 of PharaohH6547. 21And when HadadH1908 heardH8085 in EgyptH4714 that DavidH1732 slept with his fathersH1, and that JoabH3097 the captain of the hostH6635 was deadH4191, HadadH1908 saidH559 to PharaohH6547, Let me depart, that I may goH7971 to mine own country. 22Then PharaohH6547 saidH559 unto him, But what hast thou lackedH2638 with me, that, behold, thou seekest to goH7971 to thine own country? And he answered, Nothing: howbeit only let me depart.
23And GodH430 raisedH6965 upanotheradversaryH7854 unto him, Rezon the sonH1121 of EliadaH450, who had fledH1272 from his lordH113 HadadezerH1909 kingH4428 of ZobahH6678. 24And he gatheredH6908 menH376 unto him, and becameH1961 captain over a troopH1416, when DavidH1732 slewH2026 them of Zobah: and they went to DamascusH1834, and dweltH3427 therein, and reignedH4427 in DamascusH1834. 25And he wasH1961 an adversaryH7854 to IsraelH3478 all the daysH3117 of SolomonH8010, besides the mischief that HadadH1908 did: and he abhorred IsraelH3478, and reignedH4427 over Syria.
26And JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, an Ephraimite of ZeredahH6868, a servantH5650 of SolomonH8010, whose mother’sH517 nameH8034 was Zeruah, a widowH490, he also liftedH7311 up his handH3027 against the kingH4428. 27And this was the reason why he liftedH7311 up his handH3027 against the kingH4428: SolomonH8010 builtH1129 MilloH4407, and repaired the breachH6556 of the cityH5892 of DavidH1732 his fatherH1. 28And the manH376 JeroboamH3379 was a mightyH1368 manH376 of valor; and SolomonH8010 sawH7200 the youngH5288 manH376 that he was industrious, and he gave him charge over all the labor of the houseH1004 of JosephH3130. 29And it came to pass at that timeH6256, when JeroboamH3379 wentH3318 out of JerusalemH3389, that the prophetH5030 AhijahH281 the ShiloniteH7888 foundH4672 him in the wayH1870; now AhijahH281 had clad himself with a newH2319 garmentH8008; and they twoH8147 wereH1961 aloneH905 in the fieldH7704. 30And AhijahH281 laid hold of the newH2319 garmentH8008 that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces. 31And he saidH559 to JeroboamH3379, TakeH3947 thee tenH6235 pieces; for thusH3541 saith Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, Behold, I will rend the kingdomH4467 out of the handH3027 of SolomonH8010, and will giveH5414 tenH6235 tribesH7626 to thee 32(but he shall have oneH259 tribeH7626, for my servantH5650 David’s sakeH4616 and for Jerusalem’s sakeH4616, the cityH5892 which I have chosenH977 out of all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478); 33because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the SidoniansH6722, ChemoshH3645 the godH430 of MoabH4124, and MilcomH4445 the godH430 of the children of AmmonH5983; and they have not walkedH1980 in my waysH1870, to do that which is rightH3477 in mine eyesH5869, and to keep my statutesH2708 and mine ordinancesH4941, as did DavidH1732 his fatherH1. 34Howbeit I will not takeH3947 the whole kingdomH4467 out of his handH3027; but I will makeH7896 him princeH5387 all the daysH3117 of his life, for DavidH1732 my servant’sH5650 sakeH4616 whom I choseH977, who keptH8104 my commandmentsH4687 and my statutesH2708; 35but I will takeH3947 the kingdom out of his son’sH1121 handH3027, and will giveH5414 it unto thee, even tenH6235 tribesH7626. 36And unto his sonH1121 will I giveH5414 oneH259 tribeH7626, that DavidH1732 my servantH5650 may have a lampH5216 alway before me in JerusalemH3389, the cityH5892 which I have chosenH977 me to putH5414 my nameH8034 there.
