Joshua Reviews Israel’s History
1Then 1JoshuaH3091 gatheredH622 allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 at ShechemH7927, and calledH7121 for the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478, their headsH7218, their judgesH8199, and their officersH7860; and they presentedH3320 themselves beforeH6440 GodH430. 2JoshuaH3091 saidH559 to allH3605 the peopleH5971, “ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 saysH559: ‘From ancientH5769 timesH5769 your fathersH1 livedH3427 beyondH5676 the Euphrates RiverH5104, namely, 2TerahH8646, the fatherH1 of AbrahamH85 and the fatherH1 of NahorH5152, and they servedH5647 otherH312 godsH430. 3Then 3I tookH3947 your fatherH1 AbrahamH85 from beyondH4480H5676 the Euphrates RiverH5104 and ledH1980 him through allH3605 the landH776 of CanaanH3667, and 4multipliedH7235 his 5descendantsH2233 and gaveH5414 him 6IsaacH3327. 4To IsaacH3327 I gaveH5414 7JacobH3290 and EsauH6215, and 8to EsauH6215 I gaveH5414 MountH2022 SeirH8165, to possessH3423 it; but 9JacobH3290 and his sonsH1121 wentH3381 downH3381 to EgyptH4714. 5Then 10I sentH7971 MosesH4872 and AaronH175, and I plaguedH5062 EgyptH4714 11by whatH834 I didH6213 in its midstH7130; and afterwardH310 I broughtH3318 you outH3318. 6So I broughtH3318 your fathersH1 outH3318 of EgyptH4714, and 12you cameH935 to the seaH3220; and EgyptH4714 pursuedH7291 your fathersH1 with chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571 to the 13RedH5488 SeaH3220. 7But when they criedH6817 outH6817 to the LordH3068, He putH7760 darknessH3990 betweenH996 you and the EgyptiansH4713, and broughtH935 the seaH3220 upon them and coveredH3680 them; and your own eyesH5869 sawH7200 whatH834 I didH6213 in EgyptH4714. And 14you livedH3427 in the wildernessH4057 for a longH7227 timeH3117. 8Then 15I broughtH935 you into the landH776 of the AmoritesH567, who livedH3427 beyondH5676 the JordanH3383, and they foughtH3898 with you; but I handedH5414H3027 them overH5414 to you, and you tookH3423 possessionH3423 of their landH776 when I eliminatedH8045 them beforeH6440 you. 9Then 16BalakH1111 the sonH1121 of ZipporH6834, kingH4428 of MoabH4124, roseH6965 upH6965 and foughtH3898 against IsraelH3478, and he sentH7971 messengers and summonedH7121 BalaamH1109 the sonH1121 of BeorH1160 to curseH7043 you. 10But I 17wasH14 not willingH14 to listenH8085 to BalaamH1109. So he had to blessH1288 you, and I savedH5337 you from his handH3027. 1118You crossedH5674 the JordanH3383 and cameH935 to JerichoH3405; and the citizensH1167 of JerichoH3405 foughtH3898 against you, and 19the AmoriteH567, the PerizziteH6522, the CanaaniteH3669, the HittiteH2850, the GirgashiteH1622, the HiviteH2340, and the JebusiteH2983. Therefore 20I handedH5414H3027 them overH5414 to you. 12Then I 21sentH7971 the hornetH6880 beforeH6440 you and it 22droveH1644 outH1644 the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567 from you--23not by your swordH2719 nor your bowH7198. 13And 24I gaveH5414 you a landH776 on whichH834 you had not laboredH3021, and citiesH5892 whichH834 you had not builtH1129, and you have livedH3427 in them; you are eatingH398 of vineyardsH3754 and oliveH2132 grovesH2132 whichH834 you did not plantH5193.’
“We Will Serve the Lord”
14“NowH6258, therefore, 2526fearH3372 the LordH3068 and serveH5647 Him in sincerityH8549 and 27truthH571; and doH5493 awayH5493 with the godsH430 whichH834 your fathersH1 servedH5647 beyondH5676 the Euphrates RiverH5104 and in EgyptH4714, and serveH5647 the LordH3068. 15But ifH518 it is disagreeableH7451 in your sightH5869 to serveH5647 the LordH3068, chooseH977 for yourselves todayH3117 whomH4310 you will serveH5647: whetherH518 the godsH430 whichH834 your fathersH1 servedH5647, whichH834 were beyondH5676 the Euphrates RiverH5104, or 28the godsH430 of the AmoritesH567 in whoseH834 landH776 you are livingH3427; but as for me and my houseH1004, we will serveH5647 the LordH3068.”
16The peopleH5971 answeredH6030 and saidH559, “FarH2486 be it from us that we would abandonH5800 the LordH3068 to serveH5647 otherH312 godsH430; 17for the LordH3068 our GodH430 is He who broughtH5927 us and our fathersH1 upH5927 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, from the houseH1004 of slavesH5650, and didH6213 theseH428 greatH1419 signsH226 in our sightH5869 and watchedH8104 overH8104 us through allH3605 the wayH1870 in whichH834 we wentH1980 and among allH3605 the peoplesH5971 through whoseH834 midstH7130 we passedH5674. 18The LordH3068 droveH1644 outH1644 from beforeH6440 us allH3605 the peoplesH5971, even the AmoritesH567 who livedH3427 in the landH776. We alsoH1571 will serveH5647 the LordH3068, for He is our GodH430.”
19Then JoshuaH3091 saidH559 to the peopleH5971, “You will not beH3201 ableH3201 to serveH5647 the LordH3068, 29for He is a holyH6918 GodH430. He is 30a jealousH7072 GodH410; 31He will not forgiveH5375 your wrongdoingH6588 or your sinsH2403. 2032IfH3588 you abandonH5800 the LordH3068 and serveH5647 foreignH5236 godsH430, then He will turnH7725 and doH7489 you harmH7489 and destroyH3615 you afterH310 He has doneH3190 goodH3190 to you.” 21And the peopleH5971 saidH559 to JoshuaH3091, “NoH3808, but we will serveH5647 the LordH3068.” 22So JoshuaH3091 saidH559 to the peopleH5971, “You are witnessesH5707 against yourselves that 33you have chosenH977 for yourselves the LordH3068, to serveH5647 Him.” And they saidH559, “We are witnessesH5707.” 23“NowH6258 then, doH5493 awayH5493 with the foreignH5236 godsH430 whichH834 are in your midstH7130, and 34inclineH5186 your heartsH3824 to the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478.” 24And 35the peopleH5971 saidH559 to JoshuaH3091, “We will serveH5647 the LordH3068 our GodH430 and 36obeyH8085 His voiceH6963.” 2537So JoshuaH3091 madeH3772 a covenantH1285 with the peopleH5971 that dayH3117, and madeH7760 for them a statuteH2706 and an ordinanceH4941 in ShechemH7927. 26And JoshuaH3091 38wroteH3789 theseH428 wordsH1697 in the BookH5612 of the LawH8451 of GodH430; and he tookH3947 a largeH1419 stoneH68 and setH6965 it upH6965 thereH8033 underH8478 the oakH427 that was by the sanctuaryH4720 of the LordH3068. 27Then JoshuaH3091 saidH559 to allH3605 the peopleH5971, “BeholdH2009, 39thisH2088 stoneH68 shall be a witnessH5713 against us, becauseH3588 it has heardH8085 allH3605 the wordsH561 of the LordH3068 whichH834 He spokeH1696 40to us; so it shall be a witnessH5713 against you, soH6435 thatH6435 you do notH6435 denyH3584 your GodH430.” 28Then JoshuaH3091 dismissedH7971 the peopleH5971, eachH376 to his inheritanceH5159.
Joshua’s Death and Burial
29Now it cameH1961 aboutH1961 afterH310 theseH428 thingsH1697 that JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, the servantH5650 of the LordH3068, diedH4191, being 110H3967H6235 yearsH8141 oldH1121. 30And they buriedH6912 him in the territoryH1366 of his inheritanceH5159, in 41Timnath-serahH8556, whichH834 is in the hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669, on the northH6828 of MountH2022 GaashH1608.
3142IsraelH3478 servedH5647 the LordH3068 allH3605 the daysH3117 of JoshuaH3091 and allH3605 the daysH3117 of the eldersH2205 whoH834 43survivedH748H3117H310 JoshuaH3091, and had knownH3045 everyH3605 deedH4639 of the LordH3068 whichH834 He had doneH6213 for IsraelH3478.
32Now 44they buriedH6912 the bonesH6106 of JosephH3130, whichH834 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 broughtH5927 upH5927 from EgyptH4714, at ShechemH7927, in the plotH2513 of landH7704 45whichH834 JacobH3290 had boughtH7069 from the sonsH1121 of HamorH2544 the fatherH1 of ShechemH7927 for a hundredH3967 46piecesH7192 ofH7192 moneyH7192; and they becameH1961 the inheritanceH5159 of Joseph’sH3130 sonsH1121. 33And EleazarH499 the sonH1121 of AaronH175 diedH4191; and they buriedH6912 him at GibeahH1390, the town of his sonH1121 47PhinehasH6372, whichH834 was givenH5414 to him in the hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669.
