Joshua Reviews Israel’s History

1Then JoshuaH3091 assembledH622 allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 at ShechemH7927. He summonedH7121 the eldersH2205, leadersH7218, judgesH8199, and officersH7860 of IsraelH3478, and they presentedH3320 themselves beforeH6440 GodH430.

2And JoshuaH3091 saidH559 toH413 allH3605 the peopleH5971, “This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: ‘Long agoH5769 your fathersH1, including TerahH8646 the fatherH1 of AbrahamH85H1 and NahorH5152, livedH3427 beyondH5676 the EuphratesH51041 and worshipedH5647 otherH312 godsH430. 3But I tookH3947 your fatherH1 AbrahamH85 from beyondH5676 the EuphratesH5104 and ledH1980 himH853 through allH3605 the landH776 of CanaanH3667, and I multipliedH7235 his descendantsH2233. I gaveH5414 him IsaacH3327, 4and to IsaacH3327 I gaveH5414 JacobH3290 and EsauH6215. I gaveH5414 EsauH6215 MountH2022 SeirH8165 to possessH3423, but JacobH3290 and his sonsH1121 went downH3381 to EgyptH4714.

5Then I sentH7971 MosesH4872 and AaronH175, and I afflictedH5062 the EgyptiansH4714 by whatH834 I didH6213 thereH7130, and afterwardH310 I brought you outH3318. 6When I broughtH3318 your fathersH1 out of EgyptH4714 and you reachedH935 the Red SeaH3220,2 the EgyptiansH4713 pursuedH7291H310 them with chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571 as far as the Red SeaH3220H5488. 7So your fathers cried outH6817 toH413 the LORDH3068, and He putH7760 darknessH3990 betweenH996 you and the EgyptiansH4713, over whomH5921 He broughtH935 the seaH3220 and engulfed themH3680. Your very eyesH5869 sawH7200 whatH834 I didH6213 to the EgyptiansH4714. Then you livedH3427 in the wildernessH4057 for a longH7227 timeH3117.

8Later, I broughtH935 you toH413 the landH776 of the AmoritesH567 who livedH3427 beyondH5676 the JordanH3383. They foughtH3898 against youH854, but I deliveredH5414 themH853 into your handH3027, that you should possessH3423 their landH776 when I destroyed themH8045 before youH6440. 9Then BalakH1111 sonH1121 of ZipporH6834, the kingH4428 of MoabH4124, set outH6965 to fightH3898 against IsraelH3478. He sentH7971H7121 for BalaamH1109 sonH1121 of BeorH1160 to curse youH7043, 10but I wouldH14 notH3808 listenH8085 to BalaamH1109. So he blessed you again and againH1288H853, and I deliveredH5337 youH853 from his handH3027.

11After this, you crossedH5674 the JordanH3383 and cameH935 toH413 JerichoH3405. The peopleH1167 of JerichoH3405 foughtH3898 against you, as did the AmoritesH567, PerizzitesH6522, CanaanitesH3669, HittitesH2850, GirgashitesH1622, HivitesH2340, and JebusitesH2983, and I deliveredH5414 themH853 into your handH3027. 12I sentH7971 the hornetH6880 ahead of youH6440, and it drove outH1644 the twoH8147 AmoriteH567 kingsH4428 before youH6440, but notH3808 by your own swordH2719H3808 or bowH7198. 13So I gaveH5414 you a landH776 on whichH834 you did notH3808 toilH3021 and citiesH5892 thatH834 you did notH3808 buildH1129, and now you liveH3427 in them and eatH398 from vineyardsH3754 and olive grovesH2132 thatH834 you did notH3808 plantH5193.’

Choose Whom You Will Serve

(Deuteronomy 10:12–22)

14Now, thereforeH6258, fearH3372 the LORDH3068 and serveH5647 HimH853 in sincerityH8549 and truthH571; cast asideH5493 the godsH430 your fathersH1 servedH5647 beyondH5676 the EuphratesH5104 and in EgyptH4714, and serveH5647 the LORDH3068. 15But ifH518 it is unpleasingH7451 in your sightH5869 to serveH5647 the LORDH3068, then chooseH977 for yourselves this dayH3117 whomH4310 you will serveH5647, whether theH518 godsH430 your fathersH1 servedH5647 beyondH5676 the EuphratesH5104, orH518 the godsH430 of the AmoritesH567 in whoseH834 landH776 youH859 are livingH3427. As for meH595 and my houseH1004, we will serveH5647 the LORDH3068!”

16The peopleH5971H559 repliedH6030, “Far be itH2486 from us to forsakeH5800 the LORDH3068 to serveH5647 otherH312 godsH430! 17ForH3588 the LORDH3068 our GodH430H1931 broughtH5927 usH853 andH853 our fathersH1 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, out of the houseH1004 of slaveryH5650, andH834 performedH6213 theseH428 greatH1419 signsH226 before our eyesH5869. He also protected usH8104 throughoutH3605 our journeyH1870 and among allH3605 the nationsH5971 through whichH834 we traveledH5674H7130. 18And the LORDH3068 drove outH1644 before usH6440 allH3605 the nationsH5971, including the AmoritesH567 who livedH3427 in the landH776. WeH587 tooH1571 will serveH5647 the LORDH3068, becauseH3588 HeH1931 is our GodH430!”

19But JoshuaH3091 saidH559 toH413 the peopleH5971, “You are notH3808 ableH3201 to serveH5647 the LORDH3068, forH3588 HeH1931 is a holyH6918 GodH430; HeH1931 is a jealousH7072 GodH410; He will notH3808 forgiveH5375 your rebellionH6588 or your sinsH2403. 20IfH3588 you forsakeH5800 the LORDH3068 and serveH5647 foreignH5236 godsH430, He will turnH7725 and bring disasterH7489 on you and consumeH3615 youH853, even afterH310 He has been goodH3190 to you.”

21“NoH3808H3588!” repliedH559 the peopleH5971H413. “We will serveH5647 the LORDH3068!”

22Then JoshuaH3091H413 toldH559 them, “YouH859 are witnessesH5707 against yourselves thatH3588 youH859 have chosenH977 to serveH5647 the LORDH3068.”

“We are witnessesH5707!” they saidH559.

23“Now, thereforeH6258,” he said, “get rid ofH5493 the foreignH5236 godsH430 among youH7130 and inclineH5186 your heartsH3824 toH413 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478.”

24So the peopleH5971 saidH559 toH413 JoshuaH3091, “We will serveH5647 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 and obeyH8085 His voiceH6963.”

25On thatH1931 dayH3117 JoshuaH3091 madeH3772 a covenantH1285 for the peopleH5971, and there at ShechemH7927 he establishedH7760 for them a statuteH2706 and ordinanceH4941. 26JoshuaH3091 recordedH3789 theseH428 thingsH1697 in the BookH5612 of the LawH8451 of GodH430. Then he tookH3947 a largeH1419 stoneH68 and set it upH6965 thereH8033 underH8478 the oakH4273 thatH834 was near the sanctuaryH4720 of the LORDH3068. 27And JoshuaH3091 saidH559 toH413 allH3605 the peopleH5971, “You seeH2009 thisH2063 stoneH68. It will beH1961 a witnessH5713 against us, forH3588 itH1931 has heardH8085 allH3605 the wordsH561 the LORDH3068 has spokenH1696 to usH5973, and it will beH1961 a witnessH5713 against you if you everH6435 denyH3584 your GodH430.”

28Then JoshuaH3091 sent the peopleH5971 awayH7971, eachH376 to his own inheritanceH5159.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

(Judges 2:6–9)

Some time laterH310H428H1697, JoshuaH3091 sonH1121 of NunH5126, the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068, diedH4191 at the ageH1121H8141 of 110H3967. 30And they buriedH6912 himH853 in the landH1366 of his inheritanceH5159, at Timnath-serahH85564 in the hill countryH2022 of EphraimH669, northH6828 of MountH2022 GaashH1608. 31IsraelH3478 had servedH5647 the LORDH3068 throughoutH3605 the daysH3117 of JoshuaH3091 and of the eldersH2205 whoH834 outlivedH748H3117H310 him andH834 who had experiencedH3045 allH3605 the worksH4639 thatH834 the LORDH3068 had doneH6213 for IsraelH3478.

32AndH853 the bonesH6106 of JosephH3130, whichH834 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 had brought upH5927 out of EgyptH4714, were buriedH6912 at ShechemH7927 in the plotH2513 of landH7704 thatH834 JacobH3290H854 had purchasedH7069 from the sonsH1121 of HamorH2544, Shechem’sH7927 fatherH1, for a hundredH3967 pieces of silverH7192.5 So it becameH1961 an inheritanceH5159 for Joseph’sH3130 descendantsH1121.

33EleazarH499 sonH1121 of AaronH175 also diedH4191, and they buriedH6912 himH853 at GibeahH1389, whichH834 had been givenH5414 to his sonH1121 PhinehasH6372 in the hill countryH2022 of EphraimH669.
