Rahab Shelters Spies

1Then JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126 sentH7971 twoH8147 menH376 as spiesH7270 secretlyH2791 from 1ShittimH7851, sayingH559, “GoH1980, viewH7200 the landH776, especiallyH853 JerichoH3405.” So they wentH1980 and enteredH935 the houseH1004 of 2a prostituteH2181 whose nameH8034 was RahabH7343, and restedH7901 thereH8033. 2But it was toldH559 to the kingH4428 of JerichoH3405, sayingH559, “BeholdH2009, menH376 from the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 have comeH935 hereH2008 tonightH3915 to spyH2658 outH2658 the landH776.” 3And the kingH4428 of JerichoH3405 sentH7971 word to RahabH7343, sayingH559, “BringH3318 outH3318 the menH376 who have comeH935 to you, whoH834 have enteredH935 your houseH1004, for they have comeH935 to spyH2658 outH2658 allH3605 the landH776.” 4But the 3womanH802 had takenH3947 the twoH8147 menH376 and hiddenH6845 them, and she saidH559, “YesH3653, the menH376 cameH935 to me, but I did not knowH3045 whereH370 they were from. 5It cameH1961 aboutH1961, when it was time to shutH5462 the gateH8179 at darkH2822, that the menH376 wentH3318 outH3318; I do not knowH3045 whereH575 the menH376 wentH1980. PursueH7291 them quicklyH4118, for you will overtakeH5381 them.” 6But 4she had broughtH5927 them upH5927 to the roofH1406 and hiddenH2934 them in the stalksH6086 of flaxH6593 which she had laidH6186 inH6186 orderH6186 on the roofH1406. 7So the menH376 pursuedH7291 them on the roadH1870 to the JordanH3383, to the crossingH4569 placesH4569; and asH3512 soonH3512 asH3512 those who were pursuingH7291 them had goneH3318 outH3318, they shutH5462 the gateH8179.

8Now beforeH2962 5the spies layH7901 downH7901, she cameH5927 upH5927 to them on the roofH1406, 9and saidH559 to the menH376, “6I knowH3045 that the LordH3068 has givenH5414 you the landH776, and that the 7terrorH367 of you has fallenH5307 on us, and that allH3605 the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776 have despairedH4127 becauseH4480H6440 of you. 108For we have heardH8085 howH834 the LordH3068 driedH3001 upH3001 the waterH4325 of the 9RedH5488 SeaH3220 beforeH4480H6440 you when you cameH3318 outH3318 of EgyptH4714, and 10whatH834 you didH6213 to the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567 whoH834 were beyondH5676 the JordanH3383, to SihonH5511 and OgH5747, whomH834 you 11utterlyH2763 destroyedH2763. 11When we heardH8085 these reports, 12our heartsH3824 meltedH4549 and noH3808 13courageH7307 remainedH6965 in anyoneH376 anyH5750 longerH5750 becauseH4480H6440 of you; for the 14LordH3068 your GodH430, He is GodH430 in heavenH8064 aboveH4480H4605 and on earthH776 belowH4480H8478. 12NowH6258 then, pleaseH4994 swearH7650 to me by the LordH3068, sinceH3588 I have dealtH6213 kindlyH2617 with you, that you alsoH1571 will dealH6213 kindlyH2617 with my father’sH1 householdH1004, and giveH5414 me a 15pledgeH226 of 16truthH571, 13and 17spareH2421 my fatherH1 and my motherH517, and my brothersH251 and my sistersH269, and allH3605 whoH834 belong to them, and saveH5337 our 18livesH5315 from deathH4194.” 14So the menH376 saidH559 to her, “Our 19lifeH5315 20for yours ifH518 you do not tellH5046 thisH2088 businessH1697 of ours; and it shall comeH1961 aboutH1961 when the LordH3068 givesH5414 us the landH776 that we will 21dealH6213 kindlyH2617 and 22faithfullyH571 with you.”

The Promise to Rahab

15Then she letH3381 them downH3381 by a ropeH2256 throughH1157 the windowH2474, for her houseH1004 was on the cityH7023 wallH2346, so that she was livingH3427 on the wallH2346. 16And she saidH559 to them, “23GoH1980 to the hillH2022 countryH2022, soH6435 thatH6435 the pursuersH7291 will notH6435 encounterH6293 you, and hideH2247 yourselves thereH8033 for threeH7969 daysH3117 untilH5704 the pursuersH7291 returnH7725. Then afterwardH310 you may goH1980 on your wayH1870.” 17And the menH376 saidH559 to her, “24We shall be exemptH5355 from thisH2088 oathH7621 25to you whichH834 you have made us swearH7650, 1826unlessH2009, when we comeH935 into the landH776, you tieH7194 thisH2088 cordH8615 of scarletH8144 threadH2339 in the windowH2474 through whichH834 you letH3381 us downH3381, and 27gatherH622 into your houseH1004 your fatherH1, your motherH517, your brothersH251, and allH3605 your father’sH1 householdH1004. 19And it shall comeH1961 aboutH1961 that anyoneH3605 whoH834 goesH3318 outH3318 of the doorsH1817 of your houseH1004 outsideH2351 will have 28his bloodH1818 on his own headH7218, and we will be innocentH5355; but anyoneH3605 whoH834 is with you in the houseH1004, 29his bloodH1818 will be on our headH7218 ifH518 a handH3027 is laid on him. 20But ifH518 you tellH5046 thisH2088 businessH1697 of ours, then we shall be exemptH5355 from the oathH7621 whichH834 you have made us swearH7650.” 21She then saidH559, “According to your wordsH1697, soH3651 be it.” So she sentH7971 them awayH7971, and they departedH1980; and she tiedH7194 the scarletH8144 cordH8615 in the windowH2474.

22So they departedH1980 and cameH935 to the hillH2022 countryH2022, and remainedH3427 thereH8033 for threeH7969 daysH3117, untilH5704 the pursuersH7291 returnedH7725. Now the pursuersH7291 had searchedH1245 for them 30allH3605 along the roadH1870, but had not foundH4672 them. 23Then the twoH8147 menH376 returnedH7725 and cameH3381 downH3381 from the hillH2022 countryH2022, and they crossedH5674 overH5674 and cameH935 to JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126. Then they reportedH5608 to him allH3605 that had happenedH4672 toH4672 them. 24And they saidH559 to JoshuaH3091, “The LordH3068 has indeedH3588 handedH5414H3027 overH5414 to us allH3605 the landH776; furthermoreH1571, 31allH3605 the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776 have despairedH4127 becauseH4480H6440 of us.”
