1 Samuel 1:1-20
1Now thereH8033 was a manH376 from 1Ramathaim-zophimH7436 from the 2hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669, and his nameH8034 was 3ElkanahH511 the sonH1121 of JerohamH3395, the sonH1121 of ElihuH453, the sonH1121 of TohuH8459, the sonH1121 of ZuphH6689, an EphraimiteH673. 2And he had 4twoH8147 wivesH802: the nameH8034 of oneH259 was 5HannahH2584 and the nameH8034 of the 6otherH8145 PeninnahH6444; and PeninnahH6444 hadH1961 childrenH3206, but HannahH2584 hadH369 noH369 childrenH3206.
3Now thisH1931 manH376 would goH5927 upH5927 from his cityH5892 7yearlyH3117 8to worshipH2331 and to sacrificeH2076 to the LordH3068 of armiesH6635 in 9ShilohH7887. And the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, were priestsH3548 to the LordH3068 thereH8033. 4When the dayH3117 cameH1961 that ElkanahH511 sacrificedH2076, he 10would giveH5414 portionsH4490 to his wifeH802 PeninnahH6444 and to allH3605 her sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323; 5but to HannahH2584 he would giveH5414 a doubleH639 portionH4490, becauseH3588 he lovedH157 HannahH2584, 11but the LordH3068 had closedH5462 her wombH7358. 6Her rivalH6869, moreover, 12would provokeH3707 her bitterlyH1571H3708 to irritateH7481 her, becauseH3588 the LordH3068 had closedH5462H1157 her wombH7358. 7And it happenedH6213 yearH8141 after yearH8141, as oftenH1767 as she wentH5927 upH5927 to the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, that she would provokeH3707 her; so she weptH1058 and would not eatH398. 8Then ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 would sayH559 to her, “HannahH2584, whyH4100 do you weepH1058, and whyH4100 do you not eatH398, and whyH4100 isH7489 your heartH3824 sadH7489? 13Am I not betterH2896 to you thanH4480 tenH6235 sonsH1121?”
9Then HannahH2584 gotH6965 upH6965 afterH310 eatingH398 and drinkingH8354 in ShilohH7887. Now EliH5941 the priestH3548 was sittingH3427 on the seatH3678 by the doorpostH4201 of 14the 15templeH1964 of the LordH3068. 10She, 16greatlyH4751 distressedH4751, prayedH6419 to the LordH3068 and weptH1058 bitterlyH1058. 11And she 17madeH5087 a vowH5088 and saidH559, “LordH3068 of armiesH6635, ifH518 You will indeedH7200 18lookH7200 on the afflictionH6040 of Your bond-servantH519 and rememberH2142 me, and not forgetH7911 Your bond-servantH519, but will giveH5414 Your bond-servantH519 a 19sonH2233H376, then I will giveH5414 him to the LordH3068 allH3605 the daysH3117 of his lifeH2425, and 20a razorH4177 shall neverH3808 comeH5927 on his headH7218.”
12Now it cameH1961 aboutH1961, as she 21continuedH7235 prayingH6419 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, that EliH5941 was watchingH8104 her mouthH6310. 13As for HannahH2584, 22she was speakingH1696 in her heartH3820, onlyH7534 her lipsH8193 were quiveringH5128, but her voiceH6963 was not heardH8085. So EliH5941 thoughtH2803 that she was drunkH7910. 14Then EliH5941 saidH559 to her, “23HowH4970 longH5704H4970 will you behaveH7937 likeH7937 aH7937 drunkH7937? GetH5493 ridH5493 of your wineH3196!” 15But HannahH2584 answeredH6030 and saidH559, “NoH369, my lordH113, I am a womanH802 24despairingH7186 in spiritH7307; I have drunkH8354 neitherH3808 wineH3196 norH3808 strongH7941 drinkH7941, but I 25have pouredH8210 outH8210 my soulH5315 beforeH6440 the LordH3068. 16Do not 26considerH5414 your bond-servantH519 a uselessH1100 womanH1323, for I have spokenH1696 untilH5704 nowH2008 out of my greatH7230 concernH7879 and provocationH3708.” 17Then EliH5941 answeredH6030 and saidH559, “27GoH1980 in peaceH7965; and may the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 28grantH5414 your requestH7596 that you have askedH7592 of Him.” 18She saidH559, “29Let your bond-servantH8198 findH4672 favorH2580 in your sightH5869.” So the womanH802 wentH1980 on her wayH1870 and ateH398, and 30her faceH6440 was noH3808 longerH5750 sad.
19Then they gotH7925 upH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and worshipedH2331 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, and returnedH7725H935 againH7725 to their houseH1004 in 31RamahH7414. And ElkanahH511 32hadH3045 relationsH3045 with HannahH2584 his wifeH802, and 33the LordH3068 rememberedH2142 her. 20It cameH1961 aboutH1961 34in dueH8622 timeH3117, after HannahH2584 had conceivedH2029, that she gaveH3205 birthH3205 to a sonH1121; and she namedH7121H8034 him SamuelH8050, saying, “35BecauseH3588 I have askedH7592 for him of the LordH3068.”
