Obadiah Meets Elijah

1Now it happenedוַיְהִי֙vay.HiH1961aftermanyרַבִּ֔יםra.BimH7227daysיָמִ֣יםya.MimH3117that the wordוּדְבַר־u.de.var-H1697of the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068cameהָיָה֙ha.YahH1961to Elijahאֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452in the thirdהַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖יתha.she.li.ShitH7992yearבַּשָּׁנָ֥הba.sha.NahH8141,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Goלֵ֚ךְlekhH1980,presentהֵרָאֵ֣הhe.ra.'EhH7200yourself to Ahabאַחְאָ֔ב'ach.'AvH256, andI will provideוְאֶתְּנָ֥הve.'e.te.NahH5414rainמָטָ֖רma.TarH4306on the faceפְּנֵ֥יpe.NeiH6440of the earthהָאֲדָמָֽה׃ha.'a.da.MahH127.”

2So Elijahאֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452wentוַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙vai.Ye.lekhH1980to presentלְהֵרָא֖וֹתle.he.ra.'otH7200himself to Ahabאַחְאָ֑ב'ach.'AvH256.Now the famineוְהָרָעָ֖בve.ha.ra.'AvH7458wassevereחָזָ֥קcha.ZakH2389in Samariaבְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃be.sho.me.RonH8111.

3Ahabאַחְאָ֔ב'ach.'AvH256summonedוַיִּקְרָ֣אvai.yik.Ra'H7121Obadiahעֹבַדְיָ֖הוּ'oad.Ya.huH5662,whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834wasinH5921chargeH5921ofH5921the householdהַבָּ֑יִתha.Ba.yitH1004. (Now Obadiahוְעֹבַדְיָ֗הוּve.'oad.Ya.huH5662fearedH3372the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068greatlyמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966;

4forwhen Jezebelאִיזֶ֔בֶל'i.Ze.velH348killedבְּהַכְרִ֣יתbe.hakh.RitH3772the prophetsנְבִיאֵ֣יne.vi.'EiH5030of the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,Obadiahעֹבַדְיָ֜הוּ'oad.Ya.huH5662tookוַיִּקַּ֨חvai.yi.KachH3947a hundredמֵאָ֣הme.'AhH3967prophetsנְבִאִ֗יםne.vi.'ImH5030and hidוַֽיַּחְבִּיאֵ֞םvai.yach.bi.'EmH2244them by fiftiesחֲמִשִּׁ֥יםcha.mi.ShimH2572in a caveבַּמְּעָרָ֔הba.me.'a.RahH4631, andprovidedוְכִלְכְּלָ֖םve.khil.ke.LamH3557them with breadלֶ֥חֶםLe.chemH3899and waterוָמָֽיִם׃va.Ma.yimH4325.)

5Then Ahabאַחְאָב֙'ach.'AvH256saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Obadiahעֹ֣בַדְיָ֔הוּ'oad.Ya.huH5662, “Goלֵ֤ךְlekhH1980through the landבָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ba.'A.retzH776to allכָּל־kol-H3605the springsמַעְיְנֵ֣יma'.ye.NeiH4599of waterהַמַּ֔יִםha.Ma.yimH4325and to allכָּל־kol-H3605the riverH5158valleysH5158;perhapsאוּלַ֣י׀'u.LaiH194we will findנִמְצָ֣אnim.Tza'H4672grassחָצִ֗ירcha.TzirH2682and keepH2421the horsesס֣וּסsusH5483and mulesוָפֶ֔רֶדva.Fe.redH6505aliveוּנְחַיֶּה֙u.ne.chai.YehH2421, and not have tokillנַכְרִ֖יתnakh.RitH3772someH4480of the cattleמֵהַבְּהֵמָֽה׃me.ha.be.he.MahH929.”

6So they dividedוַֽיְחַלְּק֥וּvay.cha.le.KuH2505the landהָאָ֖רֶץha.'A.retzH776between them tosurveyלַֽעֲבָר־la.'a.vor-H5674it; Ahabאַחְאָ֞ב'ach.'AvH256wentהָלַ֨ךְha.LakhH1980oneאֶחָד֙'e.ChadH259wayבְּדֶ֤רֶךְbe.De.rekhH1870byH905himselfH905,and Obadiahוְעֹֽבַדְיָ֛הוּve.'oad.Ya.huH5662wentהָלַ֥ךְha.LakhH1980anotherאֶחָ֖ד'e.ChadH259wayבְּדֶרֶךְ־be.de.rekh-H1870byH905himselfH905.

7Now as Obadiahעֹבַדְיָ֙הוּ֙'oad.Ya.huH5662was on the wayבַּדֶּ֔רֶךְba.De.rekhH1870,beholdוְהִנֵּ֥הve.hi.NehH2009,Elijahאֵלִיָּ֖הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452metלִקְרָאת֑וֹlik.ra.ToH7122him,and he recognizedוַיַּכִּרֵ֙הוּ֙vai.ya.ki.Re.huH5234him and fellוַיִּפֹּ֣לvai.yi.PolH5307on his faceפָּנָ֔יוpa.NavH6440and saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Is it you, Elijahאֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃'e.li.Ya.huH452my masterאֲדֹנִ֥י'a.do.NiH113?”

8And he saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “It is I. Goלֵ֛ךְlekhH1980,sayאֱמֹ֥ר'e.MorH559to your masterלַאדֹנֶ֖יךָla.do.Nei.khaH113, ‘Beholdהִנֵּ֥הhi.NehH2009,Elijahאֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃'e.li.Ya.huH452is here.’”

9But he saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whatמֶ֣הmehH4100sinH2398have I committedH2398,that you are handingנֹתֵ֧ן בְּיַד־no.Ten be.yad-H5414 H3027your servantעַבְדְּךָ֛'av.de.KhaH5650over to Ahabאַחְאָ֖ב'ach.'AvH256,to putלַהֲמִיתֵֽנִי׃la.ha.mi.Te.niH4191me toH4191deathH4191?

10As surely asthe Lordיְהוָ֣הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430livesחַ֣י׀chaiH2416,thereH3426isH3426noאִם־'im-H518nationגּ֤וֹיGoyH1471or kingdomוּמַמְלָכָה֙u.mam.la.KhahH4467to whichאֲ֠שֶׁר'a.SherH834my masterאֲדֹנִ֥י'a.do.NiH113has not sentשָׁלַ֨חsha.LachH7971wordto searchלְבַקֶּשְׁךָ֔le.va.kesh.ChaH1245for you; and whenever they sayוְאָמְר֖וּve.'a.me.RuH559, ‘He is not here,’he makes the kingdomהַמַּמְלָכָה֙ha.mam.la.KhahH4467or nationהַגּ֔וֹיha.GoyH1471swearוְהִשְׁבִּ֤יעַve.hish.Bi.a'H7650that they could not findיִמְצָאֶֽכָּה׃yim.tza.'E.kahH4672you.

11Yet nowוְעַתָּ֖הve.'a.TahH6258you are sayingאֹמֵ֑ר'o.MerH559, ‘Goלֵ֛ךְlekhH1980,sayאֱמֹ֥ר'e.MorH559to your masterלַאדֹנֶ֖יךָla.do.Nei.khaH113, “Beholdהִנֵּ֥הhi.NehH2009,Elijahאֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃'e.li.Ya.huH452is here!”’

12And it will comeH1961aboutH1961when I leaveאֵלֵ֣ךְ'e.LekhH1980 H4480youthat the Spiritוְר֨וּחַve.Ru.achH7307of the Lordיְהוָ֤ה׀Yah.wehH3068will carryיִֽשָּׂאֲךָ֙yi.sa.'a.KhaH5375you to whereעַ֚ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר'al 'a.SherH5921 H834I do not knowאֵדָ֔ע'e.Da'H3045;so when I comeוּבָ֨אתִיu.Va.tiH935and informלְהַגִּ֧ידle.ha.GidH5046Ahabלְאַחְאָ֛בle.'ach.'AvH256and he cannotH3808findיִֽמְצָאֲךָ֖yim.tza.'a.KhaH4672you, he will killוַהֲרָגָ֑נִיva.ha.ra.Ga.niH2026me, though I,your servantוְעַבְדְּךָ֛ve.'av.de.KhaH5650, havefearedH3372the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068from my youthמִנְּעֻרָֽי׃mi.ne.'u.RaiH5271.

13Has it not been reportedהֻגַּ֤דhu.GadH5046to my masterלַֽאדֹנִי֙la.do.NiH113whatאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834I didעָשִׂ֔יתִי'a.Si.tiH6213when Jezebelאִיזֶ֔בֶל'i.Ze.velH348killedבַּהֲרֹ֣גba.ha.RogH2026the prophetsנְבִיאֵ֣יne.vi.'EiH5030of the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,that I hidוָאַחְבִּא֩va.'ach.Bi'H2244a hundredמֵ֣אָהMe.'ahH3967prophetsמִנְּבִיאֵ֨יmi.ne.vi.'EiH5030of the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068by fiftiesH2572in a caveבַּמְּעָרָ֔הba.me.'a.RahH4631,and providedוָאֲכַלְכְּלֵ֖םva.'a.khal.ke.LemH3557them with breadלֶ֥חֶםLe.chemH3899and waterוָמָֽיִם׃va.Ma.yimH4325?

14Yet nowוְעַתָּה֙ve.'a.TahH6258you are sayingאֹמֵ֔ר'o.MerH559, ‘Goלֵ֛ךְlekhH1980,sayאֱמֹ֥ר'e.MorH559to your masterלַֽאדֹנֶ֖יךָla.do.Nei.khaH113, “Beholdהִנֵּ֣הhi.NehH2009,Elijahאֵלִיָּ֑הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452is here”’;he will then killוַהֲרָגָֽנִי׃ סva.ha.ra.Ga.niH2026me!”

15Then Elijahאֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “As surely asthe Lordיְהוָ֣הYah.wehH3068of armiesצְבָא֔וֹתtze.va.'otH6635livesחַ֚יchaiH2416,beforeלְפָנָ֑יוle.fa.NavH6440whomאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I standעָמַ֖דְתִּי'a.Mad.tiH5975,I will certainlyכִּ֥יkiH3588presentאֵרָאֶ֥ה'e.ra.'EhH7200myself to him todayהַיּ֖וֹםhai.YomH3117.”

16So Obadiahעֹבַדְיָ֛הוּ'oad.Ya.huH5662wentוַיֵּ֧לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to meetלִקְרַ֥אתlik.RatH7122Ahabאַחְאָ֖ב'ach.'AvH256and informedוַיַּגֶּד־vai.ya.ged-H5046him; then Ahabאַחְאָ֖ב'ach.'AvH256wentוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to meetלִקְרַ֥אתlik.RatH7122Elijahאֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃'e.li.Ya.huH452.

17When Ahabאַחְאָ֖ב'ach.'AvH256sawכִּרְא֥וֹתkir.'otH7200Elijahאֵלִיָּ֑הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452,Ahabאַחְאָב֙'ach.'AvH256saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Is thisזֶ֖הzehH2088you, the causeH5916ofH5916disasterH5916to Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478?”

18He saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I have not broughtH5916disasterH5916toH5916Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478,but you and your father’sאָבִ֑יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1houseוּבֵ֣יתu.VeitH1004have, becauseyou have abandonedבַּֽעֲזָבְכֶם֙ba.'a.za.ve.KhemH5800the commandmentsמִצְוֹ֣תmitz.VotH4687of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068andyou have followedוַתֵּ֖לֶךְ אַחֲרֵ֥יva.Te.lekh 'a.cha.ReiH1980 H310the Baalsהַבְּעָלִֽים׃ha.be.'a.LimH1168.

19Nowוְעַתָּ֗הve.'a.TahH6258then, sendשְׁלַ֨חshe.LachH7971orders andgatherקְבֹ֥ץke.VotzH6908to me allכָּל־kol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478atMountהַ֣רharH2022Carmelהַכַּרְמֶ֑לha.kar.MelH3760, togetherwith 450אַרְבַּ֧ע מֵא֣וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֗ים'ar.Ba' me.'ot va.cha.mi.ShimH702 H3967 H2572prophetsנְבִיאֵ֨יne.vi.'EiH5030of Baalהַבַּ֜עַלha.Ba.'alH1168and fourאַרְבַּ֣ע'ar.Ba'H702hundredמֵא֔וֹתme.'otH3967prophetsוּנְבִיאֵ֤יu.ne.vi.'EiH5030ofthe Asherahהָֽאֲשֵׁרָה֙ha.'a.she.RahH842,who eatאֹכְלֵ֖י'o.khe.LeiH398at Jezebel’sאִיזָֽבֶל׃'i.Za.velH348tableשֻׁלְחַ֥ןshul.ChanH7979.”

God or Baal on Mount Carmel

20So Ahabאַחְאָ֖ב'ach.'AvH256sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֥חvai.yish.LachH7971ordersamong allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478and broughtH6908the prophetsהַנְּבִיאִ֖יםha.ne.vi.'ImH5030togetherH6908at Mountהַ֥רharH2022Carmelהַכַּרְמֶֽל׃ha.kar.MelH3760.

21Then Elijahאֵלִיָּ֜הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452approachedוַיִּגַּ֨שׁvai.yi.GashH5066allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֗םha.'AmH5971and saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “HowH4970longעַד־'ad-H5704 H4970are you going tostruggleפֹּסְחִים֮po.se.ChimH6452with the twoשְׁתֵּ֣יshe.TeiH8147choicesH5589?Ifאִם־'im-H518the Lordיְהוָ֤הYah.wehH3068is Godהָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ha.'E.lo.HimH430,followלְכ֣וּ אַחֲרָ֔יוle.Khu 'a.cha.RavH1980 H310Him; but ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518Baalהַבַּ֖עַלha.Ba.'alH1168,followלְכ֣וּ אַחֲרָ֑יוle.Khu 'a.cha.RavH1980 H310him.” But the peopleהָעָ֛םha.'AmH5971did not answerעָנ֥וּ'a.NuH6030him so much asa wordדָּבָֽר׃da.VarH1697.

22Then Elijahאֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙'e.li.Ya.huH452saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971, “Ialoneלְבַדִּ֑יle.va.DiH905am leftנוֹתַ֧רְתִּיno.Tar.tiH3498as a prophetנָבִ֛יאna.Vi'H5030of the Lordלַיהוָ֖הla.Yah.wehH3068,while Baal’sהַבַּ֔עַלha.Ba.'alH1168prophetsוּנְבִיאֵ֣יu.ne.vi.'EiH5030are450אַרְבַּע־ מֵא֥וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים'ar.ba'- me.'ot va.cha.mi.ShimH702 H3967 H2572menאִֽישׁ׃'IshH376.

23Now have them giveוְיִתְּנוּ־ve.yi.te.nu-H5414us twoשְׁנַ֣יִםshe.Na.yimH8147oxenפָּרִ֗יםpa.RimH6499;and have them chooseוְיִבְחֲר֣וּve.yiv.cha.RuH977the oneהָאֶחָ֜דha.'e.ChadH259oxהַפָּ֨רha.ParH6499for themselves and cutוִֽינַתְּחֻ֗הוּvi.na.te.Chu.huH5408it upH5408,and placeוְיָשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ve.ya.Si.muH7760it on the woodהָ֣עֵצִ֔יםha.'e.TzimH6086,but putיָשִׂ֑ימוּya.Si.muH7760noH3808fireוְאֵ֖שׁve.'EshH784under it;and I will prepareאֶעֱשֶׂ֣ה׀'e.'e.SehH6213the otherהָאֶחָ֗דha.'e.ChadH259oxהַפָּ֣רha.ParH6499and layוְנָֽתַתִּי֙ve.na.ta.TiH5414it on the woodהָ֣עֵצִ֔יםha.'e.TzimH6086,and I will not putאָשִֽׂים׃'a.SimH7760a fireוְאֵ֖שׁve.'EshH784under it.

24Then you callוּקְרָאתֶ֞םu.ke.ra.TemH7121on the nameבְּשֵׁ֣םbe.ShemH8034of your godאֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם'e.lo.hei.KhemH430,and I will callאֶקְרָ֣א'ek.Ra'H7121on the nameבְשֵׁם־ve.shem-H8034of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068; andthe Godהָאֱלֹהִ֛יםha.'E.lo.HimH430whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834answersיַעֲנֶ֥הya.'a.NehH6030by fireבָאֵ֖שׁva.'EshH784,He is Godהָאֱלֹהִ֑יםha.'E.lo.HimH430.”And allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֛םha.'AmH5971repliedוַיַּ֧עַן וַיֹּאמְר֖וּvai.Ya.'an vai.yo.me.RuH6030 H559, “That is a goodט֥וֹבTovH2896ideaהַדָּבָֽר׃ha.da.VarH1697.”

25So Elijahאֵלִיָּ֜הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the prophetsלִנְבִיאֵ֣יlin.vi.'EiH5030of Baalהַבַּ֗עַלha.Ba.'alH1168, “Chooseבַּחֲר֨וּba.cha.RuH977the oneהָֽאֶחָד֙ha.'e.ChadH259oxהַפָּ֤רha.ParH6499for yourselves and prepareוַעֲשׂ֣וּva.'a.SuH6213it firstרִאשֹׁנָ֔הri.sho.NahH7223,sinceכִּ֥יkiH3588there aremanyהָרַבִּ֑יםha.ra.BimH7227ofyou, and callוְקִרְאוּ֙ve.kir.'UH7121on the nameבְּשֵׁ֣םbe.ShemH8034of your godאֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם'e.lo.hei.KhemH430,but putתָשִֽׂימוּ׃ta.Si.muH7760noלֹ֥אlo'H3808fireוְאֵ֖שׁve.'EshH784under the ox.”

26Then they tookוַ֠יִּקְחוּVai.yik.chuH3947the oxהַפָּ֨רha.ParH6499whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834was givenנָתַ֣ןna.TanH5414them and they preparedוַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֒vai.ya.'a.SuH6213it, and they calledוַיִּקְרְא֣וּvai.yik.re.'UH7121on the nameבְשֵׁם־ve.shem-H8034of Baalהַ֠בַּעַלHa.ba.'alH1168from morningמֵהַבֹּ֨קֶרme.ha.Bo.kerH1242untilוְעַד־ve.'ad-H5704noonהַצָּהֳרַ֤יִםha.tzo.ho.Ra.yimH6672,sayingלֵאמֹר֙le.MorH559, “O Baalהַבַּ֣עַלha.Ba.'alH1168,answerעֲנֵ֔נוּ'a.Ne.nuH6030us!” But thereH369wasH369noH369voiceק֖וֹלKolH6963and noH369oneH369answeredעֹנֶ֑ה'o.NehH6030. And theylimpedוַֽיְפַסְּח֔וּvay.fa.se.ChuH6452aboutעַל־'al-H5921the altarהַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַha.miz.Be.achH4196whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834they had madeעָשָֽׂה׃'a.SahH6213.

27And at noonבַֽצָּהֳרַ֜יִםva.tzo.ho.Ra.yimH6672Elijahאֵלִיָּ֗הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452ridiculedוַיְהַתֵּ֧לvay.ha.TelH2048them and saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “Callקִרְא֤וּkir.'UH7121outH7121with a loudגָּדוֹל֙ga.dOlH1419voiceבְקוֹל־ve.kol-H6963,sinceH3588he is a godאֱלֹהִ֣ים'E.lo.HimH430;undoubtedlyH3588he is attendingH7879toH7879businessH7879,or is on the wayH5509,or is on a journeyדֶ֣רֶךְDe.rekhH1870.Perhapsאוּלַ֛י'u.LaiH194he is asleepיָשֵׁ֥ןya.ShenH3463,and will awakenוְיִקָֽץ׃ve.yi.KatzH3364.”

28So they criedH7121outH7121with a loudגָּד֔וֹלga.DolH1419voiceבְּק֣וֹלbe.KolH6963, andcutוַיִּתְגֹּֽדְדוּ֙vai.yit.go.de.DuH1413themselves according to their customכְּמִשְׁפָּטָ֔םke.mish.pa.TamH4941with swordsבַּחֲרָב֖וֹתba.cha.ra.VotH2719and lancesוּבָֽרְמָחִ֑יםu.va.re.ma.ChimH7420untilעַד־'ad-H5704bloodדָּ֖םdamH1818gushedH8210outH8210on them.

29When middayהַֽצָּהֳרַ֔יִםha.tzo.ho.Ra.yimH6672wasH5674pastH5674,they ravedוַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֔וּvai.yit.na.be.'UH5012untilעַ֖ד'adH5704the time of the offeringלַעֲל֣וֹתla.'a.LotH5927of the eveningsacrificeהַמִּנְחָ֑הha.min.ChahH4503;but thereH369wasH369noH369voiceק֥וֹלKolH6963,noH369oneH369answeredעֹנֶ֖ה'o.NehH6030, andnoH369oneH369paidH7182attentionקָֽשֶׁב׃Ka.shevH7182.

30Then Elijahאֵלִיָּ֤הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to allלְכָל־le.kholH3605the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971, “ComeH5066forwardH5066to me.” So allכָל־khol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971cameH5066forwardH5066to him. Andhe repairedוַיְרַפֵּ֛אvay.ra.Pe'H7495the altarמִזְבַּ֥חmiz.BachH4196of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068which had been tornהֶהָרֽוּס׃he.ha.RusH2040downH2040.
