Hebrews 9:2-28

2For 1a 2tabernacle was equipped, the 3outer sanctuary, in which were 4the lampstand, 5the table, and 6the 7sacred bread; this is called the Holy Place. 3Behind 8the second veil there was a 9tabernacle which is called the 10Most Holy Place, 4having a golden 1112altar of incense and 13the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was 14a golden jar holding the manna, 15Aaron’s staff which budded, and 16the tablets of the covenant; 5and above it were the 17cherubim of glory 18overshadowing the 19atoning cover; but about these things we cannot now speak in detail.

6Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests 20are continually entering the 21outer 22tabernacle, performing the divine worship, 7but into 23the second, only 24the high priest enters 25once a year, 26not without taking blood which he 27offers for himself and for the 2829sins of the people committed in ignorance. 830The Holy Spirit is signifying this, 31that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the 32outer tabernacle is still standing, 9which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly 33both gifts and sacrifices are offered which 34cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, 10since they relate only to 35food, 36drink, and various 37washings, 38regulations for the 39body imposed until 40a time of reformation.

11But when Christ appeared as a 41high priest of the 42good things 43having come, He entered through 44the greater and more perfect 45tabernacle, 46not made by hands, that is, 47not of this creation; 12and not through 48the blood of goats and calves, but 49through His own blood, He 50entered the holy place 51once for all time, 52having obtained 53eternal redemption. 13For if 54the blood of goats and bulls, and 55the 56ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the 57cleansing of the flesh, 14how much more will 58the blood of Christ, who through 5960the eternal Spirit 61offered Himself without blemish to God, 62cleanse your conscience from 63dead works to serve 64the living God?

15For this reason 65He is the 66mediator of a 67new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the violations that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been 68called may 69receive the promise of 70the eternal inheritance. 16For where there is a 71covenant, there must of necessity 72be the death of the one who made it. 17For a 73covenant is valid only when people are dead, 74for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. 18Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. 19For when every commandment had been 75spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, 76he took the 77blood of the calves and the goats, with 78water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both 79the book itself and all the people, 20saying, “80This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.” 21And in the same way he 81sprinkled both the 82tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22And 83almost all things are cleansed with blood, according to the Law, and 84without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

23Therefore it was necessary for the 85copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these things, but 86the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ 87did not enter a holy place made by hands, a mere copy of 88the true one, but into 89heaven itself, now 90to appear in the presence of God for us; 25nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as 91the high priest enters 92the Holy Place 93year by year with blood that is not his own. 26Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since 94the foundation of the world; but now 95once at 96the consummation of the ages He has been 97revealed to put away sin 9899by the sacrifice of Himself. 27And just as 100it is destined for people to die once, and after this 101comes judgment, 28so Christ also, having been 102offered once to 103bear the sins of many, will appear 104a second time for 105salvation 106without reference to sin, to those who 107eagerly await Him.
