Hebrews 9:2-28
2For there was 1a 2tabernacle prepared, the 3outer one, in which were 4the lampstand and 5the table and 6the 7sacred bread; this is called the holy place. 3Behind 8the second veil there was a 9tabernacle which is called the 10Holy of Holies, 4having a golden 1112altar of incense and 13the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was 14a golden jar holding the manna, and 15Aaron’s rod which budded, and 16the tables of the covenant; 5and above it were the 17cherubim of glory 18overshadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail.
6Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests 19are continually entering the 20outer 21tabernacle performing the divine worship, 7but into 22the second, only 23the high priest enters 24once a year, 25not without taking blood, which he 26offers for himself and for the 2728sins of the people committed in ignorance. 829The Holy Spirit is signifying this, 30that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the 31outer tabernacle is still standing, 9which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly 32both gifts and sacrifices are offered which 33cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, 10since they relate only to 34food and 35drink and various 36washings, 37regulations for the 38body imposed until 39a time of reformation.
11But when Christ appeared as a 40high priest of the 41good things 42to come, He entered through 43the greater and more perfect 44tabernacle, 45not made with hands, that is to say, 46not of this creation; 12and not through 47the blood of goats and calves, but 48through His own blood, He 49entered the holy place 50once for all, 51having obtained 52eternal redemption. 13For if 53the blood of goats and bulls and 54the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the 55cleansing of the flesh, 14how much more will 56the blood of Christ, who through 5758the eternal Spirit 59offered Himself without blemish to God, 60cleanse 61your conscience from 62dead works to serve 63the living God?
15For this reason 64He is the 65mediator of a 66new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been 67called may 68receive the promise of 69the eternal inheritance. 16For where a 70covenant is, there must of necessity 71be the death of the one who made it. 17For a 72covenant is valid only when 73men are dead, 74for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. 18Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. 19For when every commandment had been 75spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, 76he took the 77blood of the calves and the goats, with 78water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both 79the book itself and all the people, 20saying, “80This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.” 21And in the same way he 81sprinkled both the 82tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22And according to the 83Law, one may 84almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and 85without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
23Therefore it was necessary for the 86copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but 87the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ 88did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of 89the true one, but into 90heaven itself, now 91to appear in the presence of God for us; 25nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as 92the high priest enters 93the holy place 94year by year with blood that is not his own. 26Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since 95the foundation of the world; but now 96once at 97the consummation of the ages He has been 98manifested to put away sin 99100by the sacrifice of Himself. 27And inasmuch as 101it is 102appointed for men to die once and after this 103comes judgment, 28so Christ also, having been 104offered once to 105bear the sins of many, will appear 106a second time for 107salvation 108without reference to sin, to those who 109eagerly await Him.
