1Now it happenedוַֽיְהִי֙vay.HiH1961afterwardsאַֽחֲרֵי־ כֵ֔ן'a.cha.rei- KhenH310 H3651thatthe kingמֶ֖לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of the Ammonitesבְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֑וֹןbe.Nei a.MonH1121 H5983diedוַיָּ֕מָתvai.Ya.motH4191,and Hanunחָנ֥וּןcha.NunH2586his sonבְּנ֖וֹbe.NoH1121becameH4427kingH4427in his placeתַּחְתָּֽיו׃tach.TavH8478.

2Then Davidדָּוִ֜דda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I will showאֶעֱשֶׂה־'e.'e.seh-H6213kindnessחֶ֣סֶד׀Che.sedH2617to Hanunחָנ֣וּןcha.NunH2586the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121ofNahashנָחָ֗שׁna.ChashH5176,justH3512as his fatherאָבִ֤יו'a.VivH1showedעָשָׂ֨ה'a.SahH6213kindnessחֶ֔סֶדChe.sedH2617to me.” So Davidדָּוִ֧דda.VidH1732sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֨חvai.yish.LachH7971someבְּיַד־be.yad-H3027of his servantsעֲבָדָ֖יו'a.va.DavH5650to consoleלְנַחֲמ֛וֹle.na.cha.MoH5162him concerningאֶל־'el-H413his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1.But when David’sדָוִ֔דda.VidH1732servantsעַבְדֵ֣י'av.DeiH5650cameוַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙vai.ya.Vo.'uH935to the landאֶ֖רֶץ'E.retzH776of the Ammonitesבְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃be.Nei a.MonH1121 H5983,

4So Hanunחָנ֜וּןcha.NunH2586tookוַיִּקַּ֨חvai.yi.KachH3947David’sדָוִ֗דda.VidH1732servantsעַבְדֵ֣י'av.DeiH5650andshavedH1548offH1548halfחֲצִ֣יcha.TziH2677of their beardsזְקָנָ֔םze.ka.NamH2206, andcutוַיִּכְרֹ֧תvai.yikh.RotH3772offH3772their garmentsמַדְוֵיהֶ֛םmad.vei.HemH4063in the middleבַּחֵ֖צִיba.Che.tziH2677as farעַ֣ד'adH5704as their hipsH8351,and sentH7971them awayוַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃Vay.sha.le.ChemH7971.

5When they toldוַיַּגִּ֤דוּvai.ya.Gi.duH5046itto Davidלְדָוִד֙le.da.VidH1732,he sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֣חvai.yish.LachH7971to meetלִקְרָאתָ֔םlik.ra.TamH7122them, for the menH376were greatlyמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966humiliatedנִכְלָמִ֣יםnikh.la.MimH3637.And the kingהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ha.Me.lekhH4428saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Stayשְׁב֣וּshe.VuH3427at Jerichoבִֽירֵח֔וֹvi.re.ChoH3405untilעַד־'ad-H5704your beardsזְקַנְכֶ֖םze.kan.KhemH2206growיְצַמַּ֥חye.tza.MachH6779, and thenreturnוְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃ve.shav.TemH7725.”

6Now when the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּ֔וֹןa.MonH5983sawוַיִּרְאוּ֙vai.yir.'UH7200thatthey had becomeH887odiousנִבְאֲשׁ֖וּniv.'a.ShuH887to Davidבְּדָוִ֑דbe.da.VidH1732,the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Ammonעַמּ֡וֹןa.MonH5983sentוַיִּשְׁלְח֣וּvai.yish.le.ChuH7971andhiredוַיִּשְׂכְּרוּ֩vai.yis.ke.RuH7936the Arameansאֲרַ֨ם'a.RamH758ofBeth-rehobH1050and theArameansאֲרַ֣ם'a.RamH758of Zobahצוֹבָ֗אtzo.Va'H6678,20,000עֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֙לֶף֙'es.Rim 'e.lefH6242 H505footרַגְלִ֔יrag.LiH7273soldiersH7273,and the kingמֶ֤לֶךְMe.lekhH4428ofMaacahמַֽעֲכָה֙ma.'a.KhahH4601with 1,000אֶ֣לֶף'E.lefH505menH376,and the menH382of TobH382with 12,000שְׁנֵים־ עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶףshe.neim- 'a.Sar 'E.lefH8147 H6240 H505menH376.

7When Davidדָּוִ֑דda.VidH1732heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֖עvai.yish.Ma'H8085of it,he sentוַיִּשְׁלַח֙vai.yish.LachH7971Joabיוֹאָ֔בyo.'AvH3097and allכָּל־kol-H3605the armyהַצָּבָ֖אha.tza.Va'H6635,the mightyH1368menH1368.

8The sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּ֔וֹןa.MonH5983cameוַיֵּֽצְאוּ֙vai.ye.tze.'UH3318out and drewוַיַּעַרְכ֥וּvai.ya.'ar.KhuH6186up in battleמִלְחָמָ֖הmil.cha.MahH4421arrayat the entranceפֶּ֣תַחPe.tachH6607of thecityהַשָּׁ֑עַרha.Sha.'arH8179,while the Arameansוַאֲרַ֨םva.'a.RamH758of Zobahצוֹבָ֤אtzo.Va'H6678and of Rehobוּרְחוֹב֙u.re.chOvH7340and the menH382ofTobH382and Maacahוּמַֽעֲכָ֔הu.ma.'a.KhahH4601wereby themselvesלְבַדָּ֖םle.va.DamH905in the fieldבַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃ba.sa.DehH7704.

9Now when Joabיוֹאָ֗בyo.'AvH3097sawוַיַּ֣רְאvai.Yar'H7200thatthe battleפְּנֵ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֔הpe.Nei ha.mil.cha.MahH6440 H4421was set againstאֵלָיו֙'e.LavH413him in frontמִפָּנִ֖יםmi.pa.NimH6440and in the rearוּמֵֽאָח֑וֹרu.me.'a.ChorH268,he selectedוַיִּבְחַ֗רvai.yiv.CharH977from allמִכֹּל֙mi.KolH3605the choiceבְּחוּרֵ֣יbe.chu.ReiH977men of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לbe.yis.ra.'elH3478,and arrayedוַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְvai.ya.'a.RokhH6186themagainstלִקְרַ֥אתlik.RatH7122the Arameansאֲרָֽם׃'a.RamH758.

10But the remainderיֶ֣תֶרYe.terH3499of the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971he placedנָתַ֕ןna.TanH5414in the handבְּיַ֖דbe.YadH3027of Abishaiאַבְשַׁ֣י'av.ShaiH52his brotherאָחִ֑יו'a.ChivH251,and he arrayedוַֽיַּעֲרֹ֕ךְvai.ya.'a.RokhH6186themagainstלִקְרַ֖אתlik.RatH7122the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּֽוֹן׃a.MonH5983.

11He saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Ifאִם־'im-H518the Arameansאֲרָם֙'a.RamH758are tooמִמֶּ֔נִּיmi.Me.niH4480strongתֶּחֱזַ֤קte.che.ZakH2388for me, then you shall helpלִֽישׁוּעָ֑הli.shu.'AhH3444me, but ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518the sonsבְּנֵ֤יbe.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּוֹן֙'a.mOnH5983are tooמִמְּךָ֔mi.me.KhaH4480strongיֶחֱזְק֣וּye.chez.KuH2388for you, then I will comeוְהָלַכְתִּ֖יve.ha.lakh.TiH1980to helpלְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַֽle.ho.Shi.a'H3467you.

12Be strongH2388,and let us showH2388ourselves courageousH2388for the sakeH1157of our peopleעַמֵּ֔נוּ'a.Me.nuH5971and for the citiesעָרֵ֣י'a.ReiH5892of our Godאֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ'e.lo.Hei.nuH430; andmay the Lordוַֽיהוָ֔הva.Yah.wehH3068doיַעֲשֶׂ֥הya.'a.SehH6213whatH2896is goodH2896in His sightבְּעֵינָֽיו׃be.'ei.NavH5869.”

13So Joabיוֹאָ֗בyo.'AvH3097and the peopleוְהָעָם֙ve.ha.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were with him drewH5066nearH5066to the battleלַמִּלְחָמָ֖הla.mil.cha.MahH4421against the Arameansבַּֽאֲרָ֑םba.'a.RamH758, andthey fledוַיָּנֻ֖סוּvai.ya.Nu.suH5127beforeמִפָּנָֽיו׃mi.pa.NavH4480 H6440him.

14When the sonsוּבְנֵ֨יu.ve.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּ֤וֹןa.MonH5983sawרָאוּ֙ra.'UH7200that the Arameansאֲרָ֔ם'a.RamH758fledנָ֣סnasH5127, they alsofledוַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙vai.ya.Nu.suH5127beforeמִפְּנֵ֣יmi.pe.NeiH4480 H6440Abishaiאֲבִישַׁ֔י'a.vi.ShaiH52and enteredוַיָּבֹ֖אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935the cityהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892.Then Joabיוֹאָ֗בyo.'AvH3097returnedוַיָּ֣שָׁבvai.Ya.shovH7725from fightingagainstמֵעַל֙me.'AlH5921the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּ֔וֹןa.MonH5983and cameוַיָּבֹ֖אvai.ya.Vo'H935to Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ye.ru.sha.LimH3389.

15When the Arameansאֲרָ֔ם'a.RamH758sawוַיַּ֣רְאvai.Yar'H7200that they had beendefeatedנִגַּ֖ףni.GafH5062by Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478,they gatheredוַיֵּאָסְפ֖וּvai.ye.'a.se.FuH622themselves togetherיָֽחַד׃Ya.chadH3162.

16And HadadezerH1909sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֣חvai.yish.LachH7971and broughtוַיֹּצֵ֤אvai.yo.Tze'H3318out the Arameansאֲרָם֙'a.RamH758whoאֲשֶׁר֙'a.SherH834were beyondמֵעֵ֣בֶרme.'E.verH4480 H5676theRiverהַנָּהָ֔רha.na.HarH5104,and they cameוַיָּבֹ֖אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to Helamחֵילָ֑םchei.LamH2431; andShobachוְשׁוֹבַ֛ךְve.sho.VakhH7731the commanderשַׂר־sar-H8269of the armyצְבָ֥אtze.Va'H6635of HadadezerH1909ledלִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃lif.nei.HemH6440them.
