Defeat and Death of Saul and His Sons
11Now the PhilistinesH6430 foughtH3898 against IsraelH3478; and the menH376 of IsraelH3478 fledH5127 beforeH4480H6440 the PhilistinesH6430 and fellH5307 slainH2491 on MountH2022 GilboaH1533. 2The PhilistinesH6430 closelyH1692 pursuedH1692 SaulH7586 and his sonsH1121, and the PhilistinesH6430 struckH5221 downH5221 JonathanH3083, 23AbinadabH41 and Malchi-shuaH4444, the sonsH1121 of SaulH7586. 3The battleH4421 becameH3513 heavyH3513 againstH5921 SaulH7586, and the archersH3384H7198 4overtookH4672 him; and he was woundedH2342 by the archersH3384. 4Then SaulH7586 saidH559 to his armorH3627 bearerH5375, “DrawH8025 your swordH2719 and thrustH1856 me throughH1856 with it, otherwiseH6435 theseH428 uncircumcisedH6189 will comeH935 and abuseH5953 me.” But his armorH3627 bearerH5375 wouldH14 not, for he was greatlyH3966 afraidH3372. 5Therefore SaulH7586 tookH3947 his swordH2719 and fellH5307 on it. 5When his armorH3627 bearerH5375 sawH7200 that SaulH7586 was deadH4191, he likewiseH1571 fellH5307 on his swordH2719 and diedH4191. 66Thus SaulH7586 diedH4191 with his threeH7969 sonsH1121, and allH3605 those of his houseH1004 diedH4191 togetherH3164.
7When allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 whoH834 were in the valleyH6010 sawH7200 that they had fledH5127, and that SaulH7586 and his sonsH1121 were deadH4191, they forsookH5800 their citiesH5892 and fledH5127; and the PhilistinesH6430 cameH935 and livedH3427 in them.
8It cameH1961 about the nextH4283 dayH4283, when the PhilistinesH6430 cameH935 to stripH6584 the slainH2491, that they foundH4672 SaulH7586 and his sonsH1121 fallenH5307 on MountH2022 GilboaH1533. 97So they strippedH6584 him and tookH5375 his headH7218 and his armorH3627 and sentH7971 messengers aroundH5439 the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430 to carryH1319 the good newsH1319 to their idolsH6091 and to the peopleH5971. 10They putH7760 his armorH3627 in the houseH1004 of their godsH430 and fastenedH8628 his headH1538 in the houseH1004 of DagonH1712.
Jabesh-gilead’s Tribute to Saul
11When allH3605 Jabesh-gileadH3003H1568 heardH8085 allH3605 that the PhilistinesH6430 had doneH6213 to SaulH7586, 128allH3605 the valiantH2428 menH376 aroseH6965 and tookH5375 away the bodyH1480 of SaulH7586 and the bodiesH1480 of his sonsH1121 and broughtH935 them to JabeshH3003, and they buriedH6912 their bonesH6106 underH8478 the oakH424 in JabeshH3003, and fastedH6684 sevenH7651 daysH3117.
139So SaulH7586 diedH4191 for his trespassH4604 whichH834 he committedH4603 against the LordH3068, becauseH5921 of the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 whichH834 he did not keepH8104; and alsoH1571 10because he askedH7592 counsel of a mediumH178, makingH1875 inquiryH1875 of it, 14and did not inquireH1875 of the LordH3068. Therefore He killedH4191 him and 11turnedH5437 the kingdomH4410 to DavidH1732 the sonH1121 of JesseH3448.
