1At thattimeκαιρῷkairōG2540JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424wentἐπορεύθηeporeuthēG4198throughδιὰdiaG1223the grainfieldsσπορίμων·sporimōnG4702on the SabbathσάββασινsabbasinG4521,and His disciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101became hungryἐπείνασανepeinasanG3983and beganἤρξαντοērxantoG757topickτίλλεινtilleinG5089the headsστάχυαςstachuasG4719of grainand eatἐσθίειν.esthieinG2068.

2But when the PhariseesΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiG5330sawG3708this,they saidG3004to Him, “LookἰδοὺidouG2400,Your disciplesμαθηταίmathētaiG3101doποιοῦσινpoiousinG4160whatὃhoG3739is not lawfulἔξεστινexestinG1832to doποιεῖνpoieinG4160on a Sabbathσαββάτῳ.¶sabbatōG4521.”

3But He saidG3004to them,“Have you not readἀνέγνωτεanegnōteG314whatτίtiG5101DavidG1160didἐποίησενepoiēsenG4160whenὅτεhoteG3753he became hungryἐπείνασενepeinasenG3983,he and his companionsμετ᾽met᾽G3588 G3326,

4howπῶςpōsG4459he enteredεἰσῆλθενeisēlthenG1525the houseοἶκονoikonG3624of GodθεοῦtheouG2316, andthey ateG2068theconsecratedπροθέσεωςprotheseōsG4286breadἄρτουςartousG740,whichὃhoG3739was not lawfulἐξὸνexonG1832for him to eatG2068norοὐδὲoudeG3761for thoseG3588with him, but for the priestsἱερεῦσινhi'ereusinG2409aloneμόνοις;¶monoisG3441?

5OrἪĒG2228have you not readἀνέγνωτεanegnōteG314in the LawνόμῳnomōG3551,that on the SabbathσάββασινsabbasinG4521the priestsἱερεῖςhi'ereisG2409in the templeG2413breakβεβηλοῦσινbebēlousinG953the SabbathσάββατονsabbatonG4521and are innocentἀναίτιοίanaitioiG338?

6But I sayλέγωlegōG3004to you that somethinggreaterμεῖζόνmeizonG3173than the templeG2413is hereὧδε.hōdeG5602.

7But ifεἰeiG1487you had knownἐγνώκειτεegnōkeiteG1097whatτίtiG5101thismeansἐστιν·estinG1510, ‘I desireθέλωthelōG2309compassionἔλεοςeleosG1656,and not a sacrificeθυσίαν,thusianG2378,’you would not have condemnedκατεδικάσατεkatedikasateG2613the innocentἀναιτίους.anaitiousG338.

8Forthe SonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of Manἀνθρώπου.¶anthrōpouG444is LordκύριοςkuriosG2962of the SabbathσαββάτουsabbatouG4521.”

9DepartingμεταβὰςmetabasG3327from thereἐκεῖθενekeithenG1564,He wentἦλθενēlthenG2064into their synagogueσυναγωγὴνsunagōgēnG4864.
