Faithless Priests

13So the workmenוַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֙ הַמְּלָאכָ֔הvai.ya.'a.Su ha.me.la.KhahH4399 H6213laboredעֹשֵׂ֣י'o.SeiH6213,and the repairאֲרוּכָ֛ה'a.ru.KhahH724workלַמְּלָאכָ֖הla.me.la.KhahH4399progressedוַתַּ֧עַלva.Ta.'alH5927in their handsבְּיָדָ֑םbe.ya.DamH3027, and theyrestoredוַֽיַּעֲמִ֜ידוּvai.ya.'a.Mi.duH5975the houseבֵּ֧יתbeitH1004of Godהָֽאֱלֹהִ֛יםha.'E.lo.HimH430accordingעַל־'al-H5921to its specificationsמַתְכֻּנְתּ֖וֹmat.kun.ToH4971and strengthenedוַֽיְאַמְּצֻֽהוּ׃Vay.'a.me.Tzu.huH553it.

15Now when Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָ֛עye.ho.ya.Da'H3077reachedH2204a ripeוַיִּשְׂבַּ֥עvai.yis.Ba'H7646 H3117oldוַיִּזְקַ֧ןvai.yiz.KanH2204ageH3117he diedוַיָּמֹ֑תvai.ya.MotH4191;he was one hundredמֵאָ֧הme.'AhH3967and thirtyוּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛יםu.she.lo.ShimH7970yearsשָׁנָ֖הsha.NahH8141oldבֶּן־ben-H1121at his deathבְּמוֹתֽוֹ׃be.mo.ToH4194.

16They buriedוַיִּקְבְּרֻ֥הוּvai.yik.be.Ru.huH6912himin the cityבְעִיר־ve.'ir-H5892of Davidדָּוִ֖ידda.VidH1732amongH5973the kingsהַמְּלָכִ֑יםha.me.la.KhimH4428,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588he had doneעָשָׂ֤ה'a.SahH6213wellH2899inIsraelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לbe.Yis.ra.'ElH3478andto Godהָאֱלֹהִ֖יםha.'E.lo.HimH430and His houseוּבֵיתֽוֹ׃ סu.vei.ToH1004.

17But afterוְאַֽחֲרֵ֥יve.'a.cha.ReiH310the deathמוֹת֙mOtH4194of Jehoiadaיְה֣וֹיָדָ֔עye.Ho.ya.Da'H3077the officialsשָׂרֵ֣יsa.ReiH8269of Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063cameבָּ֚אוּBa.'uH935and bowedH7812downוַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּvai.yish.ta.cha.VuH7812to the kingלַמֶּ֑לֶךְla.Me.lekhH4428,and the kingהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428listenedשָׁמַ֥עsha.Ma'H8085to them.

19YetHe sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֤חvai.yish.LachH7971prophetsנְבִאִ֔יםne.vi.'ImH5030to them to bringלַהֲשִׁיבָ֖םla.ha.shi.VamH7725them backH7725to the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068;though they testifiedוַיָּעִ֥ידוּvai.ya.'I.duH5749against them, they would not listenהֶאֱזִֽינוּ׃ סhe.'e.Zi.nuH238.

Joash Murders Son of Jehoiada

20Then the Spiritוְר֣וּחַve.Ru.achH7307of Godאֱלֹהִ֗ים'E.lo.HimH430cameלָֽבְשָׁה֙la.ve.ShahH3847on Zechariahזְכַרְיָה֙ze.khar.YahH2148the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָ֣עye.ho.ya.Da'H3077the priestהַכֹּהֵ֔ןha.ko.HenH3548;and he stoodוַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖דvai.ya.'a.ModH5975aboveמֵעַ֣לme.'AlH4480 H5921the peopleלָעָ֑םla.'AmH5971and saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Thusכֹּ֣ה׀kohH3541Godהָאֱלֹהִ֗יםha.'E.lo.HimH430has saidאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559, ‘Whyלָמָה֩la.MahH4100do you transgressעֹבְרִ֜ים'oe.RimH5674the commandmentsמִצְוֹ֤תmitz.VotH4687of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068and do not prosperתַצְלִ֔יחוּtatz.Li.chuH6743?Becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588you have forsakenעֲזַבְתֶּ֥ם'a.zav.TemH5800the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068,He has also forsakenוַיַּֽעֲזֹ֥בvai.ya.'a.ZoH5800you.’”

21Sothey conspiredוַיִּקְשְׁר֣וּvai.yik.she.RuH7194againstעָלָ֔יו'a.LavH5921him and at the commandבְּמִצְוַ֣תbe.mitz.VatH4687of the kingהַמֶּ֑לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428they stonedוַיִּרְגְּמֻ֥הוּvai.yir.ge.Mu.huH7275himto deathאֶ֖בֶן'E.venH68in the courtבַּחֲצַ֖רba.cha.TzarH2691of the houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.

22Thus JoashH3060the kingהַמֶּ֗לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428did not rememberזָכַ֞רza.KharH2142the kindnessהַחֶ֙סֶד֙ha.Che.sedH2617whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834his fatherאָבִיו֙'a.VivH1Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָ֤עye.ho.ya.Da'H3077had shownעָשָׂ֜ה'a.SahH6213him, but he murderedוַֽיַּהֲרֹ֖גvai.ya.ha.RogH2026his sonבְּנ֑וֹbe.NoH1121.And as he diedH4194he saidאָמַ֔ר'a.MarH559, “Maythe Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068seeיֵ֥רֶאYe.re'H7200andavengeוְיִדְרֹֽשׁ׃ פve.yid.RoshH1875!”

Aram Invades and Defeats Judah

23Now it happenedוַיְהִ֣י׀vay.HiH1961at the turnלִתְקוּפַ֣תlit.ku.FatH8622of the yearהַשָּׁנָ֗הha.sha.NahH8141thatthe armyחֵ֣ילcheilH2428of the Arameansאֲרָם֒'a.RamH758cameעָלָ֣ה'a.LahH5927up againstעָלָיו֮'a.LavH5921him; and they cameוַיָּבֹ֗אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to Judahיְהוּדָה֙ye.hu.DahH3063and Jerusalemוִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔םvi.Ru.sha.LimH3389,destroyedוַיַּשְׁחִ֛יתוּvai.yash.Chi.tuH7843allכָּל־kol-H3605the officialsשָׂרֵ֥יsa.ReiH8269of the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971from among the peopleמֵעָ֑םme.'AmH5971,and sentשִׁלְּח֖וּshi.le.ChuH7971allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605their spoilשְׁלָלָ֥םshe.la.LamH7998to the kingלְמֶ֥לֶךְle.Me.lekhH4428of Damascusדַּרְמָֽשֶׂק׃dar.Ma.sekH1834.

25When they had departedוּבְלֶכְתָּ֣םu.ve.lekh.TamH1980from him (for they leftעָזְב֣וּ'a.ze.VuH5800him veryרַבִּים֒ra.BimH7227sickבְּמַחֲלוּיִ֣םbe.ma.cha.li.yimH4251),his own servantsעֲבָדָ֗יו'a.va.DavH5650conspiredהִתְקַשְּׁר֨וּhit.ka.she.RuH7194againstH5921him because of the bloodבִּדְמֵי֙bid.MeiH1818of thesonבְּנֵי֙be.NeiH1121of Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָ֣עye.ho.ya.Da'H3077the priestהַכֹּהֵ֔ןha.ko.HenH3548,and murderedוַיַּֽהַרְגֻ֥הוּvai.ya.har.Gu.huH2026him on his bedמִטָּת֖וֹmi.ta.ToH4296.So he diedוַיָּמֹ֑תvai.ya.MotH4191,and they buriedוַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֙הוּ֙vai.yik.be.Ru.huH6912him in the cityבְּעִ֣ירbe.'IrH5892of Davidדָּוִ֔ידda.VidH1732,but they did not buryקְבָרֻ֖הוּke.va.Ru.huH6912him in the tombsבְּקִבְר֥וֹתbe.kiv.RotH6913of the kingsהַמְּלָכִֽים׃ סha.me.la.KhimH4428.

26Now theseוְאֵ֖לֶּהve.'E.lehH428are those who conspiredהַמִּתְקַשְּׁרִ֣יםha.mit.ka.she.RimH7194againstעָלָ֑יו'a.LavH5921him: Zabadזָבָ֗דza.VadH2066the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Shimeathשִׁמְעָת֙shim.'AtH8100the AmmonitessH5985,and Jehozabadוִיה֣וֹזָבָ֔דvi.Ho.za.VadH3075the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Shimrithשִׁמְרִ֖יתshim.RitH8116the Moabitessהַמּוֹאָבִֽית׃ha.mo.'a.VitH4125.
