16We have comeἐγνώκαμενegnōkamenG1097to knowG1097and have believedπεπιστεύκαμενpepisteukamenG4100the loveἀγάπηνagapēnG26whichἣνhēnG3739GodθεὸςtheosG2316hasἔχειecheiG2192for us.GodθεὸςtheosG2316is loveἀγάπηagapēG26, and the one whoabidesμένωνmenōnG3306in loveἀγάπῃagapēG26abidesμένει,meneiG3306in GodθεῷtheōG2316,and GodθεὸςtheosG2316abidesμένει.meneiG3306in him.

17By thisτούτῳtoutōG3778,loveἀγάπηagapēG26is perfectedτετελείωταιteteleiōtaiG5048with us, so that we may haveἔχωμενechōmenG2192confidenceπαρρησίανparrēsianG3954inthe dayἡμέρᾳhēmeraG2250of judgmentκρίσεως,kriseōsG2920;becauseὅτιhotiG3754as He is, so alsoκαὶkaiG2532are we in thisτούτῳ.toutōG3778worldκόσμῳkosmōG2889.

18There is noG3756fearφόβοςphobosG5401in loveἀγάπῃ,agapēG26; butperfectτελείαteleiaG5046loveἀγάπηagapēG26castsβάλλειballeiG906out fearφόβον,phobonG5401,becauseὅτιhotiG3754fearφόβοςphobosG5401involvesἔχει·echeiG2192punishmentκόλασινkolasinG2851,and the one who fearsφοβούμενοςphoboumenosG5399is notperfectedτετελείωταιteteleiōtaiG5048in loveἀγάπῃ.agapēG26.

19We loveἀγαπῶμενagapōmenG25,becauseὅτιhotiG3754He firstπρῶτοςprōtosG4413lovedἠγάπησενēgapēsenG25us.

20IfἐάνeanG1437someoneτιςtisG5100saysG3004, “I loveἀγαπῶagapōG25GodθεὸνtheonG2316,” andhatesμισῇ,misēaG3404his brotherἀδελφὸνadelphonG80, he is aliarψεύστηςpseustēsG5583; forthe one who does not loveἀγαπῶνagapōnG25his brotherἀδελφὸνadelphonG80whomὃνhonG3739he has seenἑώρακεν,he'ōrakenG3708,cannotδύναταιdunataiG1410 G3756loveἀγαπᾶν·agapanG25GodθεὸνtheonG2316whomὃνhonG3739he has not seenἑώρακενhe'ōrakenG3708.

21AndthisταύτηνtautēnG3778commandmentἐντολὴνentolēnG1785we haveἔχομενechomenG2192from Him, that the one who lovesἀγαπῶνagapōnG25GodθεὸνtheonG2316should loveἀγαπᾷagapaG25his brotherἀδελφὸνadelphonG80alsoG2532.
