The Day the Sun Stood Still
1NowH1961 Adoni-zedekH139 kingH4428 of JerusalemH3389 heardH8085 thatH3588 JoshuaH3091 had capturedH3920 AiH5857 and devoted it to destructionH27631—doing toH6213 AiH5857 and its kingH4428H3651 asH834 he had done toH6213 JerichoH3405 and its kingH4428—and thatH3588 the peopleH3427 of GibeonH1391 had made peaceH7999 withH854 IsraelH3478 and wereH1961 living near themH7130. 2So Adoni-zedek and his people were greatlyH3966 alarmedH3372, becauseH3588 GibeonH1391 was a greatH1419 cityH5892, like oneH259 of the royalH4467H3588 citiesH5892; itH1931 was largerH1419 thanH4480 AiH5857, and allH3605 its menH582 were mightyH1368.
3Therefore Adoni-zedekH139 kingH4428 of JerusalemH3389 sentH7971 word toH413 HohamH1944 kingH4428 of HebronH2275H413, PiramH6502 kingH4428 of JarmuthH3412H413, JaphiaH3309 kingH4428 of LachishH3923H413, and DebirH1688 kingH4428 of EglonH5700, sayingH559, 4“Come upH5927H413 and help meH5826. We will attackH5221 GibeonH1391, becauseH3588 they have made peaceH7999 withH854 JoshuaH3091H854 and the IsraelitesH1121H3478.”
5So the fiveH2568 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567—the kingsH4428 of JerusalemH3389H4428, HebronH2275H4428, JarmuthH3412H4428, LachishH3923H4428, and EglonH5700H1992—joined forcesH622 and advancedH5927 with allH3605 their armiesH4264. They campedH2583 beforeH5921 GibeonH1391 and made warH3898 against itH5921.
6Then the menH582 of GibeonH1391 sentH7971 word toH413 JoshuaH3091 inH413 the campH4264 at GilgalH1537H559: “Do notH408 abandonH7503H3027 your servantsH5650. ComeH5927 quicklyH4120 and saveH3467 us! Help usH5826, becauseH3588 allH3605 the kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567 fromH3427 the hill countryH2022 have joined forcesH6908 against usH413.”
7So JoshuaH3091 and his wholeH3605 armyH4421H5973H5971, including allH3605 the mighty menH1368 of valorH2428, cameH5927 fromH4480 GilgalH1537.
8The LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 JoshuaH3091, “Do notH408 be afraidH3372 of them, forH3588 I have delivered themH5414 into your handH3027. NotH3808 oneH376 of them shall standH5975 against youH6440.”
9After marchingH5927 allH3605 nightH3915 fromH4480 GilgalH1537, JoshuaH3091 caughtH935 themH413 by surpriseH6597. 10And the LORDH3068 threw them into confusionH2000 beforeH6440 IsraelH3478, who defeated themH5221 in a greatH1419 slaughterH4347 at GibeonH1391, pursued themH7291 alongH1870 the ascentH4608 to Beth-horonH1032, and struck them downH5221 asH5704 far as AzekahH5825H5704 and MakkedahH4719. 11As they fledH5127 beforeH6440 IsraelH3478H1992 along the descentH4174 from Beth-horonH1032 toH5704 AzekahH5825, the LORDH3068 cast downH7993 on themH5921 largeH1419 hailstonesH68 fromH4480 the skyH8064, and moreH7227 of themH834 were killedH4191 byH68 the hailstonesH1259 thanH834 by the swordsH2719 of the IsraelitesH1121H3478.
On the dayH3117 that the LORDH3068 gave the AmoritesH567 overH5414 toH6440 the IsraelitesH1121H3478H559, JoshuaH3091 spokeH1696 to the LORDH3068 in the presenceH5869 of IsraelH3478:
Is thisH1931 notH3808 writtenH3789 inH5921 the BookH5612 of JasharH3477?4
14There has beenH1961 noH3808 dayH3117H1931 like it beforeH6440 or sinceH310, when the LORDH3068 listenedH8085 to the voiceH6963 of a manH376, becauseH3588 the LORDH3068 foughtH3898 for IsraelH3478.
15Then JoshuaH3091 returnedH7725 with allH3605 IsraelH3478 toH413 the campH4264 at GilgalH1537.
The Victory at Makkedah
16Now theH428 fiveH2568 kingsH4428 had fledH5127 and hiddenH2244 in the caveH4631 at MakkedahH4719. 17And JoshuaH3091 was informedH5046H559: “The fiveH2568 kingsH4428 have been foundH4672; they are hidingH2244 in the caveH4631 at MakkedahH4719.”
18So JoshuaH3091 saidH559, “RollH1556 largeH1419 stonesH68 againstH413 the mouthH6310 of the caveH4631, and postH6485 menH582 thereH5921 to guard themH8104. 19But youH859, do notH408 stop thereH5975. PursueH7291H310 your enemiesH341 and attack them from behindH2179. Do notH408 let themH5414 reachH935H413 their citiesH5892, forH3588 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 has delivered themH5414 into your handH3027.”
So JoshuaH3091 and the IsraelitesH1121H3478 continuedH3615 to inflictH5221 a terribleH1419H3966 slaughterH4347 untilH5704 they had finished them offH8552, and the remainingH8300 survivorsH8277 retreatedH935 toH413 the fortifiedH4013 citiesH5892. 21The wholeH3605 armyH5971 returnedH7725 safelyH7965 toH413 JoshuaH3091 inH413 the campH4264 at MakkedahH4719, and no oneH3808 dared to utterH2782 a wordH3956 againstH376 the IsraelitesH1121H3478.
22Then JoshuaH3091 saidH559, “OpenH6605 the mouthH6310 of the caveH4631 and bring thoseH428 fiveH2568 kingsH4428 outH4480H4631 toH413 meH3318.” 23SoH3651 they broughtH3318 theH428 fiveH2568 kingsH4428 out ofH4480 the caveH4631—the kingsH4428 of JerusalemH3389, HebronH2275, JarmuthH3412, LachishH3923, and EglonH5700.
When they had broughtH3318 theH428 kingsH4428 toH413 JoshuaH3091, he summonedH7121 allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 and saidH559H413 toH413 the armyH582H4421 commandersH7101 who had accompaniedH1980 himH854, “ComeH7126 here and putH7760 your feetH7272 onH5921 the necksH6677 of theseH428 kingsH4428.”
So the commanders came forwardH7126 and putH7760 their feetH7272 onH5921 their necksH6677.
25“Do notH408 be afraidH3372H408 or discouragedH2865,” JoshuaH3091 saidH559. “Be strongH2388 and courageousH553, forH3588 the LORDH3068 will doH6213 thisH3602 to allH3605 the enemiesH341 youH859 fightH3898.”
26AfterH310 thisH3651, JoshuaH3091 struck downH5221 and killedH4191 the kings, and he hungH8518 their bodies onH5921 fiveH2568 treesH60866 and left themH1961H8518 thereH5921H6086 untilH5704 eveningH6153. 27At sunsetH935H8121 JoshuaH3091 orderedH6680 that they be taken downH3381 fromH5921 the treesH6086 and thrownH7993 intoH413 the caveH4631 in whichH834 they had hiddenH2244H8033. Then largeH1419 stonesH68 were placedH7760 againstH5921 the mouthH6310 of the caveH4631, and the stonesH5704H6106 are there to thisH2088 dayH3117.
On thatH1931 dayH3117 JoshuaH3091 capturedH3920 MakkedahH4719 and put itH5221H6310 to the swordH2719, along withH853 its kingH4428. He devoted to destructionH2763 everyoneH853H3605H5315 in the city, leavingH7604 noH3808 survivorsH8300. So he didH6213 to the kingH4428 of MakkedahH4719 asH834 he had doneH6213 to the kingH4428 of JerichoH3405.
Conquest of the Southern Cities
29Then JoshuaH3091 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 with himH5973 moved onH5674 from MakkedahH4719 to LibnahH3841 and foughtH3898 againstH5973 LibnahH3841. 30And the LORDH3068 alsoH1571 deliveredH5414 that city and its kingH4428 into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478, andH853 Joshua putH5221H6310 allH3605 the peopleH5315 to the swordH2719, leavingH7604 noH3808 survivorsH8300. And he didH6213 to the kingH4428 of Libnah asH834 he had doneH6213 to the kingH4428 of JerichoH3405.
31And JoshuaH3091 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 with himH5973 moved onH5674 from LibnahH3841 to LachishH3923. They laid siegeH2583 to itH5921 and foughtH3898 against it. 32And the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414 LachishH3923 into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478, and Joshua capturedH3920 it on the secondH8145 dayH3117. He putH5221H6310 allH3605 the peopleH5315 to the swordH2719, just asH3605 he had doneH6213 to LibnahH3841.
33At that timeH227 HoramH2036 kingH4428 of GezerH1507 wentH5927 to helpH5826 LachishH3923, but JoshuaH3091 struck him downH5221 along with his peopleH5971H5704, leavingH7604 noH1115 survivorsH8300.
34So JoshuaH3091 moved onH5674 from LachishH3923 to EglonH5700, and allH3605 IsraelH3478 with himH5973. They laid siegeH2583 to itH5921 and foughtH3898 against itH5921. 35ThatH1931 dayH3117 they capturedH3920 Eglon and put itH5221H6310 to the swordH2719, andH853 Joshua devoted to destructionH2763 everyoneH3605H5315 in the city, just asH3605 he had doneH6213 to LachishH3923.
36Then JoshuaH3091 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 with himH5973 went upH5927 from EglonH5700 to HebronH2275 and foughtH3898 against itH5921. 37They captured itH3920 and putH5221H6310 to the swordH2719 its kingH4428, allH3605 its villagesH5892, andH853 allH3605 the peopleH5315. Joshua leftH7604 noH3808 survivorsH8300, just asH3605 he had doneH6213 at EglonH5700; he devoted to destructionH2763 Hebron andH853 everyoneH3605H5315 in it.
38Finally JoshuaH3091 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 with himH5973 turnedH7725 toward DebirH1688 and foughtH3898 against itH5921. 39And they capturedH3920 Debir, its kingH4428, andH853 allH3605 its villagesH5892. They put themH5221H6310 to the swordH2719 and devoted to destructionH2763 everyoneH3605H5315 in the city, leavingH7604 noH3808 survivorsH8300. Joshua did toH6213 DebirH1688 and its kingH4428 asH834 he had doneH6213 to HebronH2275 and asH3651 he had doneH6213 to LibnahH3841 and its kingH4428.
40So JoshuaH3091 conqueredH5221 the wholeH3605 regionH776—the hill countryH2022, the NegevH5045, the foothillsH8219,7 and the slopesH794, together withH853 allH3605 their kingsH4428—leavingH7604 noH3808 survivorsH8300. He devoted to destructionH2763 everythingH3605 that breathedH5397, just asH834 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, had commandedH6680. 41JoshuaH3091 conquered the areaH5221 fromH6947 Kadesh-barneaH6947 toH5704 GazaH5804, and the wholeH3605 regionH776 of GoshenH1657 as far asH5704 GibeonH1391.
42AndH853 becauseH3588 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, foughtH3898 for IsraelH3478, JoshuaH3091 capturedH3920 allH3605 theseH428 kingsH4428 and their landH776 in oneH259 campaignH6471. 43Then JoshuaH3091 returnedH7725 withH5973 allH3605 IsraelH3478 toH413 the campH4264 at GilgalH1537.
