Joshua 2

(Hebrews 11:30–31)

1Then JoshuaH3091 sonH1121 of NunH5126 secretlyH2791 sentH7971 twoH8147 spiesH582H7270 fromH4480 ShittimH7851,1 sayingH559, “GoH1980, inspectH7200 the landH776, especially JerichoH3405.” So they wentH1980 and enteredH935 the houseH1004 of a prostituteH802H2181 namedH8034 RahabH7343 and stayedH7901 thereH8033.

2And it was reportedH559 to the kingH4428 of JerichoH3405H559: “BeholdH2009, some menH582 of IsraelH1121H3478 have comeH935 hereH2008 tonightH3915 to spy outH2658 the landH776.”

3So the kingH4428 of JerichoH3405 sentH7971 toH413 RahabH7343 and saidH559, “Bring outH3318 the menH582 who cameH935 toH413 youH834 and enteredH935 your houseH1004, forH3588 they have comeH935 to spy outH2658 the wholeH3605 landH776.”

4But the womanH802 had takenH3947 the twoH8147 menH582 and hidden themH6845. So she saidH559, “YesH3651, the menH582 did comeH935 to meH413, but I did notH3808 knowH3045 whereH370 they had come fromH1992. 5At duskH2822, when the gateH8179 wasH1961 about to closeH5462, the menH582 went outH3318, and I do notH3808 knowH3045 which wayH575 theyH582 wentH1980. PursueH7291 themH310 quicklyH4118, andH3588 you may catch themH5381!” 6(ButH1931 Rahab had taken them upH5927 to the roofH1406 and hidden themH2934 among the stalksH6086 of flaxH6593 that she had laid outH6186 there.)

7So the king’s menH582 set out in pursuitH7291 of the spies along the roadH1870 toH5921 the fordsH4569 of the JordanH3383, and asH834 soon as theyH3318 had gone outH7291H310, the gateH8179 was shutH5462H310.

The Promise to Rahab

8BeforeH2962 the spies lay down for the nightH7901, Rahab went upH5927 onH5921 the roofH1406 9and saidH559 to themH413H582, “I knowH3045 thatH3588 the LORDH3068 has givenH5414 you this landH776 and thatH3588 the fear of youH367 has fallenH5307 on usH5921, so thatH3588 allH3605 who dwellH3427 in the landH776 are melting in fearH4127 of youH6440. 10ForH3588 we have heardH8085 howH834 the LORDH3068 dried upH3001 the watersH4325 of the RedH5488 SeaH32202 before youH6440 when you came outH3318 of EgyptH4714, and whatH834 you didH6213 to SihonH5511 and OgH5747, the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567 acrossH5676 the JordanH3383, whomH834 you devoted to destructionH2763.3 11When we heard thisH8085, our heartsH3824 meltedH4549 and everyone’sH376 courageH7307 failedH3808H6965H5750 because of youH6440, forH3588 the LORDH3068 your GodH430H1931 is GodH430 in the heavensH8064 aboveH4605 and onH5921 the earthH776 belowH8478.

12Now thereforeH6258, pleaseH4994 swearH7650 to me by the LORDH3068 that youH859 will indeedH1571 showH6213 kindnessH2617 toH5973 my familyH1004H1, becauseH3588 I showedH6213 kindnessH2617 to youH5973. GiveH5414 me a sureH571 signH226 13that you will spare the livesH2421 of my fatherH1 andH853 motherH517, my brothersH251 andH853 sistersH269, and allH3605 who belongH834 to them, and that you will deliverH5337 usH5315 from deathH4194.”

14“Our livesH5315 for yourH8478 livesH4191!” the menH582 agreedH559. “IfH518 you do notH3808 reportH5046 our missionH1697H2088H1961, we will showH6213 youH5973 kindnessH2617 and faithfulnessH571 when the LORDH3068 givesH5414 us the landH776.”

15Then Rahab let them downH3381 by a ropeH2256 throughH1157 the windowH2474, sinceH3588 the houseH1004 where sheH1931 livedH3427 was built into the wallH7023 of the cityH2346. 16“GoH1980 to the hill countryH2022,” she saidH559, “so that your pursuersH7291 will notH6435 findH6293 you. Hide yourselvesH2247 thereH8033 for threeH7969 daysH3117 untilH5704 theyH7291 have returnedH7725; thenH310 goH1980 on your wayH1870.”

17The menH582 saidH559 to herH413, “WeH587 will not be boundH5355 by thisH2088 oathH7621 you made us swearH7650 18unlessH2009, when weH587 enterH935 the landH776, you have tiedH7194 thisH2088 scarletH8144 cordH8615H2339 in the windowH2474 through whichH834 you let us downH3381, and unlessH853 you have broughtH622H413 your fatherH1 andH853 motherH517 andH853 brothersH251 and allH3605 your familyH1H1004 into your houseH1004. 19If anyoneH3605 goes outH3318 the doorH1817 of your houseH1004 into the streetH2351, his bloodH1818 will be on his own headH7218, and weH587 will be innocentH5355. But ifH518 a handH3027 is laidH1961 on anyoneH3605 with youH854 in the houseH1004H1961, his bloodH1818 will be on our headsH7218. 20And ifH518 you reportH5046 our missionH1697H2088, we will beH1961 releasedH5355 from the oathH7621 you made us swearH7650.”

21“Let itH1931 be as you sayH1697H3651,” she repliedH559, and she sent them awayH7971. And when they had goneH1980, she tiedH7194 the scarletH8144 cordH8615 in the windowH2474.

22

So the spies went outH935 into the hill countryH2022 and stayedH3427 thereH8033 threeH7969 daysH3117, untilH5704 their pursuersH7291 had returnedH7725 withoutH3808 finding themH4672, having searchedH1245 allH3605 along the roadH1870. 23Then the two menH582 started backH7725H8147, came downH3381 from the hill countryH2022, and crossedH5674 the river. So they cameH935 toH413 JoshuaH3091 sonH1121 of NunH5126 and reportedH5608 allH3605 that had happenedH4672 to themH854.

24“The LORDH3068 has surelyH3588 deliveredH5414 the entireH3605 landH776 into our handsH3027,” they saidH559 toH413 JoshuaH3091. “IndeedH1571, allH3605 who dwellH3427 in the landH776 are melting in fearH4127 of usH6440.”
