Joshua 4

1WhenH834 the wholeH3605 nationH1471 had finishedH8552 crossingH5674 the JordanH3383, the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 JoshuaH3091H559, 2“ChooseH3947 twelveH8147H6240H582 menH376 from amongH4480 the peopleH5971, oneH259H376 from each tribeH7626, 3and command themH6680: ‘Take upH5375 for yourselves twelveH8147H6240 stonesH68 fromH2088 the middleH8432 of the JordanH3383H4673H7272 where the priestsH3548 were standingH3559, carryH5674 themH853 with youH5973, and set them downH5117 in the placeH4411 whereH834 you spendH3885 the nightH3915.’”

4So JoshuaH3091H413 summonedH7121 the twelveH8147H6240 menH376 he had appointedH3559 from the IsraelitesH1121H3478, oneH259H376 from each tribeH7626, 5and saidH559 to themH3091, “Cross overH5674 beforeH6440 the arkH727 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430 intoH413 the middleH8432 of the JordanH3383. EachH376 of you is to takeH7311 aH259 stoneH68 uponH5921 his shoulderH7926, according to the numberH4557 of the tribesH7626 of IsraelH1121H3478, 6toH4616 serve asH1961 a signH226 among youH7130. In the futureH4279H559, whenH3588 your childrenH1121 askH7592, ‘WhatH4100 do theseH428 stonesH68 mean to you?’ 7you are to tellH559 them, ‘The watersH4325 of the JordanH3383 were cut offH3772 beforeH6440 the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068. When it crossedH5674 the JordanH3383, the watersH4325 were cut offH3772.’ Therefore theseH428 stonesH68 will beH1961 a memorialH2146 to the IsraelitesH1121H3478 foreverH5704H5769.”

8Thus the IsraelitesH1121H3478 didH6213H3651 asH834 JoshuaH3091 had commanded themH6680. They took upH5375 twelveH8147H6240 stonesH68 from the middleH8432 of the JordanH3383, one for eachH4557 tribeH7626 of IsraelH1121H3478, just asH834 the LORDH3068 had toldH1696 JoshuaH3091; and they carriedH5674 themH5973 toH413 the campH4411, where they set them downH5117H8033.

9Joshua alsoH3091 set upH6965 twelveH8147H6240 stonesH68 in the middleH8432 of the JordanH3383,1 in the placeH8478 where the priestsH3548 who carriedH5375 the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 stoodH4673H7272. And the stones areH1961 thereH8033 toH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117.

10Now the priestsH3548 who carriedH5375 the arkH727 remained standingH5975 in the middleH8432 of the JordanH3383 untilH5704 the peopleH5971 had completedH8552 everythingH3605H1697 the LORDH3068 had commandedH6680 JoshuaH3091 to tellH1696 themH413, just asH3605 MosesH4872 had directedH6680 JoshuaH3091. The peopleH5971 hurriedH4116 acrossH5674, 11and afterH834 everyoneH3605H5971 had finishedH8552 crossingH5674, the priestsH3548 with the arkH727 of the LORDH3068 crossedH5674 in the sight ofH6440 the peopleH5971. 12The ReubenitesH1121H7205, the GaditesH1121H1410, and the half-tribeH2677H7626 of ManassehH4519 crossed overH5674 beforeH6440 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, armed for battleH2571 asH834 MosesH4872 had instructed themH1696H413. 13About 40,000H705H505 troops armedH2502H6635 for battleH4421 crossed overH5674 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 intoH413 the plainsH6160 of JerichoH3405.

14On thatH1931 dayH3117 the LORDH3068 exaltedH1431 JoshuaH3091 in the sightH5869 of allH3605 IsraelH3478, and they reveredH3372 himH853 allH3605 the daysH3117 of his lifeH2416, just asH834 they had reveredH3372 MosesH4872.

15Then the LORDH3068H413 said toH559 JoshuaH3091H559, 16“CommandH6680 the priestsH3548 who carryH5375 the arkH727 of the TestimonyH57152 to come upH5927 fromH4480 the JordanH3383.”

17So JoshuaH3091 commandedH6680 the priestsH3548H559, “Come upH5927 fromH4480 the JordanH3383.”

18

When the priestsH3548 carryingH5375 the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068 came upH5927 outH8432 of the JordanH3383 and theirH3548 feetH3709H7272 touchedH5423 the dry landH2724, the watersH4325 of the JordanH3383 returnedH7725 to their courseH4725 and overflowedH1980 allH3605 the banksH1415 as beforeH8543H8032.

The Camp at Gilgal

19On the tenthH6218 day of the firstH7223 monthH2320 the peopleH5971 went upH5927 fromH4480 the JordanH3383 and campedH2583 at GilgalH1537 on the easternH4217 borderH7097 of JerichoH3405. 20AndH853 there at GilgalH1537 JoshuaH3091 set upH6965 theH428 twelveH8147H6240 stonesH68 they had takenH3947 fromH4480 the JordanH3383.

21Then Joshua saidH559 toH413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478H559, “In the futureH4279, whenH834 your childrenH1121 askH7592 their fathersH1H559, ‘WhatH4100 is the meaning of theseH428 stonesH68?’ 22you are to tellH3045 them, ‘IsraelH3478 crossedH5674 theH2088 JordanH3383 on dry groundH3004.’ 23ForH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 dried upH3001 the watersH4325 of the JordanH3383 before youH6440 untilH5704 you had crossed overH5674, just asH834 He didH6213 to the RedH5488 SeaH3220,3 whichH834 He dried upH3001 before usH6440 untilH5704 we had crossed overH5674. 24He did this so thatH4616 allH3605 the peoplesH5971 of the earthH776 may knowH3045 thatH3588 the handH3027 of the LORDH3068 is mightyH2389H1931, and so thatH4616 you may alwaysH3605H3117 fearH3372 the LORDH3068 your GodH430.”
