Conquest of the Northern Cities

1Now whenH1961 JabinH2985 kingH4428 of HazorH2674 heard about these thingsH8085, he sent wordH7971 toH413 JobabH3103 kingH4428 of MadonH4068; toH413 the kingsH4428 of ShimronH8110H413H4428 and AchshaphH407; 2toH413 the kingsH4428 of the northH6828 in the mountainsH2022, in the ArabahH6160 southH5045 of ChinnerethH3672, in the foothillsH8219,1 and in Naphoth-dorH5316H17562 to the westH3220; 3to the CanaanitesH3669 in the eastH4217 and westH3220; to the AmoritesH567, HittitesH2850, PerizzitesH6522, and JebusitesH2983 in the hill countryH2022; and to the HivitesH2340 at the foot ofH8478 HermonH2768 in the landH776 of MizpahH4709.

4SoH1992 these kings came outH3318 withH5973 allH3605 their armiesH4264, a multitudeH5971 as numerousH7227 as the sandH2344 onH5921 the seashoreH8193H3220, along with a great numberH7227H3966 of horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393. 5AllH3605 theseH428 kingsH4428 joined forcesH3259 and encampedH935H2583 atH413 the watersH4325 of MeromH4792 to fightH3898 againstH5973 IsraelH3478.

6Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 JoshuaH3091, “Do notH408 be afraidH3372 of themH6440, forH3588 by thisH2063 timeH6256 tomorrowH4279 IH595 will deliverH5414 all of themH3605 slainH2491 beforeH6440 IsraelH3478. You are to hamstringH6131 their horsesH5483 andH853 burn upH8313H784 their chariotsH4818.”

7So byH5921 the watersH4325 of MeromH4792, JoshuaH3091 and his wholeH3605 armyH4421H5973H5971 cameH935 upon themH5921 suddenlyH6597 and attackedH5307 them, 8and the LORDH3068 delivered themH5414 into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478, who struck them downH5221 and pursued themH7291 all the way toH5704 GreaterH7227 SidonH6721 and Misrephoth-maimH4956, and eastwardH4217 as far asH5704H4956 the ValleyH1237 of MizpehH4708. They struck them downH5221H5704, leavingH7604 noH1115 survivorsH8300. 9JoshuaH3091 treatedH6213 them asH834 the LORDH3068 had toldH559 him; he hamstrungH6131 their horsesH5483 and burned upH8313H784 their chariotsH4818.

10At thatH1931 timeH6256 JoshuaH3091 turned backH7725 and capturedH3920 HazorH2674 and putH5221 its kingH4428 to the swordH2719, becauseH3588 HazorH2674 wasH1931 formerlyH6440 the headH7218 of allH3605 theseH428 kingdomsH4467. 11The Israelites putH5221 everyoneH3605H5315 inH6310 Hazor to the swordH2719, devoting them to destructionH2763.3 NothingH3808 that breathedH5397 remainedH3498, andH853 Joshua burned downH8313H784 Hazor itselfH2674.

12

JoshuaH3091 capturedH3920 allH3605 theseH428 kingsH4428 and their citiesH5892 and put themH5221H6310 to the swordH2719. He devoted them to destructionH2763, asH834 MosesH4872 the LORD’sH3068 servantH5650 had commandedH6680. 13YetH7535 IsraelH3478 did notH3808 burnH8313 anyH3605 of the citiesH5892 builtH5975 onH5921 their moundsH8510, exceptH2108 HazorH2674H905, which JoshuaH3091 burnedH8313.

14The IsraelitesH1121H3478 took for themselvesH962 allH3605 the plunderH7998 and livestockH929 of theseH428 citiesH5892, butH7535 they putH5221H6310 allH3605 the peopleH120 to the swordH2719 untilH5704 they had completely destroyed themH8045, not sparing anyoneH7604 who breathedH5397. 15AsH834 the LORDH3068 had commandedH6680 His servantH5650 MosesH4872, soH3651 MosesH4872 commandedH6680 JoshuaH3091. That is whatH3651 JoshuaH3091 didH6213, leaving nothingH3808H1697 undoneH5493 of allH3605 thatH834 the LORDH3068 had commandedH6680 MosesH4872.

Joshua Takes the Whole Land

16So JoshuaH3091 tookH3947 thisH2063 entireH3605 regionH776: the hill countryH2022, allH3605 the NegevH5045, allH3605 the landH776 of GoshenH1657, the western foothillsH8219, the ArabahH6160, and the mountainsH2022 of IsraelH3478 and their foothillsH8219, 17fromH4480 MountH2022 HalakH2510, which risesH5927 toward SeirH8165, as far asH5704 Baal-gadH1171 in the ValleyH1237 of LebanonH3844 at the foot ofH8478 MountH2022 HermonH2768. He capturedH3920 allH3605 their kingsH4428 and struck them downH5221, putting them to deathH4191.

18JoshuaH3091H854 wagedH6213 warH4421 against allH3605 theseH428 kingsH4428 for a long periodH7227 of timeH3117. 19NoH3808H1961 cityH5892 made peaceH7999 withH413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 exceptH1115 the HivitesH2340 livingH3427 in GibeonH1391; allH3605 others were takenH3947 in battleH4421. 20ForH3588 it wasH1961 ofH854 the LORDH3068 to hardenH23884 their heartsH3820 to engageH7122 IsraelH3478H4616 in battleH4421H854, so that they would be set apart for destructionH2763 and would receiveH1961 noH1115 mercyH8467, being annihilatedH8045 asH834 the LORDH3068 had commandedH6680 MosesH4872.

21At thatH1931 timeH6256 JoshuaH3091 proceededH935 to eliminateH3772 the AnakimH6062 fromH4480 the hill countryH2022H4480 of HebronH2275H4480, DebirH1688H4480, and AnabH6024, and from allH3605 the hill countryH2022 of JudahH3063H3605H2022 and of IsraelH3478. JoshuaH3091 devoted them to destructionH2763, along withH5973 their citiesH5892. 22NoH3808 AnakimH6062 were leftH3498 in the landH776 of the IsraelitesH1121H3478; onlyH7535 in GazaH5804, GathH1661, and AshdodH795 did any surviveH7604.

23So JoshuaH3091 tookH3947 the entireH3605 landH776, in keeping with allH3605 thatH834 the LORDH3068H413 had spokenH1696 to MosesH4872. And JoshuaH3091 gaveH5414 it as an inheritanceH5159 to IsraelH3478 according to the allotmentsH4256 to their tribesH7626. Then the landH776 had restH8252 from warH4421.
