Elijah Flees from Jezebel

1Now AhabH256 toldH5046 JezebelH348 everythingH3605 thatH834 ElijahH452 had doneH6213 and howH834 he had killedH2026 allH3605 the prophetsH5030 with the swordH2719. 2So JezebelH348 sentH7971 a messengerH4397 toH413 ElijahH452, sayingH559, “May the godsH430 deal with meH6213, and ever soH3541 severelyH3254, ifH3588 by this timeH6256 tomorrowH4279 I have not madeH7760 your lifeH5315 like the livesH5315 ofH259 those you killed!”

3And Elijah was afraidH7200H6965 and ranH1980 forH413 his lifeH5315. When he cameH935 to BeershebaH884 in JudahH3063, he leftH5117 his servantH5288 thereH8033, 4while he himselfH1931 wentH1980 a day’sH3117H935 journeyH1870 into the wildernessH4057. He sat downH3427 underH8478 aH259 broom treeH7574 and prayedH7592 that heH5315 might dieH4191. “I have had enoughH7227H6258, LORDH3068,” he saidH559. “TakeH3947 my lifeH5315, forH3588 I amH595 noH3808 betterH2896 than my fathersH1.”

5Then he lay downH7901 underH8478 the broom treeH7574 and fell asleepH3462H259.

SuddenlyH2009H2088 an angelH4397 touchedH5060 him and saidH559, “Get upH6965 and eatH398.”

6And he looked aroundH5027, and thereH2009 by his headH4763 was a cake of breadH5692 baked over hot coalsH7529, and a jarH6835 of waterH4325. So he ateH398 and drankH8354 and lay downH7901 againH7725.

7A secondH8145 time the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 returnedH7725 and touchedH5060 him, sayingH559, “Get upH6965 and eatH398H3588, or the journeyH1870 will be too muchH7227 for youH4480.”

8So he got upH6965 and ateH398 and drankH8354. And strengthenedH3581 by thatH1931 foodH396, he walkedH1980 fortyH705 daysH3117 and fortyH705 nightsH3915 until he reachedH5704 HorebH2722,1 the mountainH2022 of GodH430.

The LORD Speaks to Elijah at Horeb

9ThereH8033H2009 Elijah enteredH935H8033H413 a caveH4631 and spent the nightH3885. And the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 came to himH413, sayingH559, “WhatH4100 are you doing hereH6311, ElijahH452?”

10“I have been very zealousH7065 for the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of HostsH6635,” he repliedH559, “butH3588 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 have forsakenH5800 Your covenantH1285, torn downH2040 Your altarsH4196, and killedH2026 Your prophetsH5030 with the swordH2719. IH589 am the only oneH905 leftH3498, and they are seekingH1245 my life as wellH5315.”2

11Then the LORD saidH559, “Go outH3318 and standH5975 on the mountainH2022 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. BeholdH2009, the LORDH3068 is about to pass byH5674.”

And a greatH1419 and mightyH2389 windH7307 tore intoH6561 the mountainsH2022 and shatteredH7665 the rocksH5553 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, but the LORDH3068 was notH3808 in the windH7307.

AfterH310 the windH7307 there was an earthquakeH7494, but the LORDH3068 was notH3808 in the earthquakeH7494.

12AfterH310 the earthquakeH7494 there was a fireH784, but the LORDH3068 was notH3808 in the fireH784.

And afterH310 the fireH784 came a stillH1827, smallH1851 voiceH6963. 13When ElijahH452 heard itH8085, he wrappedH3874 his faceH6440 in his cloakH155 and went outH3318 and stoodH5975 at the mouthH6607 of the caveH4631. SuddenlyH2009 a voiceH6963 came to himH413 and saidH559, “WhatH4100 are you doing hereH6311, ElijahH452?”

14“I have been very zealousH7065 for the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of HostsH6635,” he repliedH559, “butH3588 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 have forsakenH5800 Your covenantH1285, torn downH2040 Your altarsH4196, and killedH2026 Your prophetsH5030 with the swordH2719. IH589 am the only oneH905 leftH3498, and they are seekingH1245 my life as wellH5315.”

15Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 to himH413, “GoH1980 backH7725 by the way you cameH1870, and go to the DesertH4057 of DamascusH1834. When you arriveH935, you are to anointH4886 HazaelH2371 as kingH4428 overH5921 AramH758. 16You are also to anointH853H4886 JehuH3058 sonH11213 of NimshiH5250 as kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478 and ElishaH477 sonH1121 of ShaphatH8202 from Abel-meholahH65H4886 to succeed youH8478 as prophetH5030.

17ThenH1961 JehuH3058 will put to deathH4191 whoever escapesH4422 the swordH2719 of HazaelH2371, and ElishaH477 will put to deathH4191 whoever escapesH4422 the swordH2719 of JehuH3058.

18Nevertheless, I have reservedH7604 sevenH7651 thousandH505 in IsraelH3478—allH3605 whoseH834 kneesH1290 have notH3808 bowedH3766 to BaalH11684 andH3605 whose mouthsH6310 have notH3808 kissedH5401 him.”

The Call of Elisha

19So Elijah departedH1980H8033 and foundH4672 ElishaH477 sonH1121 of ShaphatH8202. HeH1931 was plowingH2790 with twelveH8147H6240 teamsH6776 of oxen, and heH1931 was with the twelfthH8147H6240 team. ElijahH452 passedH5674 by himH413 and threwH7993 his cloakH155 around himH413.

20So Elisha leftH5800 the oxenH1241, ranH7323 afterH310 ElijahH452, and saidH559, “PleaseH4994 let me kissH5401 my fatherH1 and motherH517 goodbye, and then I will followH1980 youH310.”

“Go onH1980 backH7725,” Elijah repliedH559, “forH3588 whatH4100 have I doneH6213 to you?”

21So Elisha turned backH7725 from himH310, tookH3947 his pairH6776 of oxenH1241, and slaughtered themH2076. Using the oxen’sH1241 equipmentH3627 for fuel, he cookedH1310 the meatH1320 and gaveH5414 it to the peopleH5971, and they ateH398. Then he set outH6965 to followH1980H310 and serveH8334 ElijahH452.
