The LORD’s Response to Solomon
(2 Chronicles 7:11–22)
1NowH1961 when SolomonH8010 had finishedH3615 buildingH1129 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 andH853 the royalH4428 palaceH1004, and had achievedH6213 allH3605 thatH834 he had desiredH2837 to doH2654, 2the LORDH3068 appearedH7200 toH413 him a secondH8145 time, asH834 He had appearedH7200 to himH413 at GibeonH1391. 3And the LORDH3068 saidH559 to himH413:
“I have heardH8085 your prayerH8605 and petitionH8467 before MeH6440. I have consecratedH6942 thisH2088 templeH1004, which you have builtH1129, by puttingH7760 My NameH8034 thereH8033 foreverH5704H5769; My eyesH5869 and My heartH3820 will beH1961 thereH8033 for allH3605 timeH3117.
4And as for youH859, ifH518 you walkH1980 before MeH6440 asH834 your fatherH1 DavidH1732 walkedH1980, with a heartH3824 of integrityH8537 and uprightnessH3476, doingH6213 allH3605 I have commanded youH6680, and if you keepH8104 My statutesH2706 and ordinancesH4941, 5then I will establishH6965 your royalH4467 throneH3678 overH5921 Israel foreverH3478H5769, asH834 I promisedH1696 your fatherH1 DavidH1732 when I saidH559, ‘You will neverH3808 failH3772 to have a manH376 onH5921 the throneH3678 of IsraelH3478.’
6But ifH518 indeedH7725 youH859 or your sonsH1121 turn awayH7725 from following MeH310 and do notH3808 keepH8104 the commandmentsH4687 and statutesH2708 I have setH5414 before youH6440, and if you go offH1980 to serveH5647 and worshipH7812 otherH312 godsH430, 7then I will cut offH3772 IsraelH3478 fromH5921 the landH127 thatH834 I have givenH5414 them, and I will banishH7971 fromH5921 My presenceH6440 thisH853 templeH1004 I have sanctifiedH6942 for My NameH8034. Then IsraelH3478 will becomeH1961 an object of scornH4912 and ridiculeH8148 among allH3605 peoplesH5971.
8And when thisH2088 templeH1004 has becomeH1961 a heap of rubbleH5945,1 allH3605 who passH5674 by itH5921 will be appalledH8074 and will hissH8319 and sayH559, ‘WhyH5921H4100 has the LORDH3068 doneH6213 such a thingH3602 to thisH2063 landH776 and to thisH2088 templeH1004?’ 9And others will answerH559, ‘BecauseH5921 they have forsakenH5800 the LORDH3068 their GodH430 whoH834 broughtH3318 their fathersH1 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, and have embracedH2388 otherH312 godsH430, worshipingH7812 and serving themH5647—because ofH5921 thisH3651, the LORDH3068 has broughtH935 allH3605 thisH2063 disasterH7451 upon themH5921.’”
Solomon’s Additional Achievements
(2 Chronicles 8:1–18)
10NowH1961 at the endH7097 of the twentyH6242 yearsH8141 during whichH834 SolomonH8010 builtH1129 these twoH8147 housesH1004, the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 andH853 the royalH4428 palaceH1004, 11KingH4428 SolomonH8010 gaveH5414 twentyH6242 townsH5892 in the landH776 of GalileeH1551 to HiramH2438 kingH4428 of TyreH6865, who had suppliedH5375 himH8010 with cedarH730H6086 and cypressH12652 logsH6086 and goldH2091 for his everyH3605 desireH2656. 12So HiramH2438 went outH3318 from TyreH6865 to inspectH7200 the townsH5892 thatH834 SolomonH8010 had givenH5414 him, but he was notH3808 pleased withH3474 themH5869.
13“WhatH4100 are theseH428 townsH5892 you have givenH5414 me, my brotherH251?” askedH559 Hiram, and he calledH7121 them the LandH776 of CabulH3521,3 as they are called toH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117.
14And HiramH2438 had sentH7971 the kingH4428 120H3967H6242 talentsH3603 of goldH2091.4
15ThisH2088 is the accountH1697 of the forced laborH4522 thatH834 KingH4428 SolomonH8010 imposedH5927 to buildH1129 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, his own palaceH1004, the supporting terracesH4407,5 andH853 the wallH2346 of JerusalemH3389, as well asH853 HazorH2674, MegiddoH4023, and GezerH1507.
16PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 had attackedH5927 and capturedH3920 GezerH1507. He had set itH8313 on fireH784, killedH2026 the CanaanitesH3669 who livedH3427 in the cityH5892, and givenH5414 it as a dowryH7964 to his daughterH1323, Solomon’sH8010 wifeH802. 17So SolomonH8010 rebuiltH1129 GezerH1507, LowerH8481 Beth-horonH1032, 18BaalathH1191, andH853 TamarH85596 in the WildernessH4057 of Judah,7 19as wellH853 as allH3605 the storeH4543 citiesH5892 thatH834 SolomonH8010 hadH1961 for his chariotsH7393 and horsesH65718—whateverH834 he desiredH2837H2836 to buildH1129 in JerusalemH3389, LebanonH3844, and throughoutH3605 the landH776 of his dominionH4475.
20As for allH3605 the peopleH5971 who remainedH3498 ofH4480 the AmoritesH567, HittitesH2850, PerizzitesH6522, HivitesH2340, and JebusitesH2983 (the people whoH834 wereH1992 notH3808 IsraelitesH1121H3478)— 21their descendantsH1121 whoH834 remainedH3498 in the landH776, those whomH834 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 were unableH3808H3201 to devote to destructionH27639—SolomonH8010 conscripted these peopleH5927 to be forcedH4522 laborersH5647, as they are toH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117.
22But SolomonH8010 did notH3808 consignH5414 any of the IsraelitesH1121H3478 to slaveryH5650, becauseH3588 theyH1992 were his menH582 of warH4421, his servantsH5650, his officersH8269, his captainsH7991, and the commandersH8269 of his chariotsH7393 and cavalryH6571. 23They were also the chiefH8269 officersH5324 overH5921 Solomon’sH8010 projectsH4399: 550H2572H2568H3967 supervisors overH7287 the peopleH5971 who didH6213 the workH4399.
24As soon asH389 Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323 had come upH5927 from the CityH5892 of DavidH1732 toH413 the palaceH1004 thatH834 Solomon had builtH1129 for her, heH227 builtH1129 the supporting terracesH4407.
25ThreeH7969 timesH6471 a yearH8141 SolomonH8010 offeredH5927 burnt offeringsH5930 and peace offeringsH8002 onH5921 the altarH4196 he had builtH1129 for the LORDH3068, burning incenseH6999 with themH854 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. So he completedH7999 the templeH1004.
26KingH4428 SolomonH8010 also assembledH6213 a fleet of shipsH590 at Ezion-geberH6100, whichH834 is nearH854 ElothH35910 in EdomH123, onH5921 the shoreH8193 of the RedH5488 SeaH3220.11 27And HiramH2438 sentH7971 his servantsH5650, sailorsH582H591 who knewH3045 the seaH3220, to serve in the fleetH590 withH5973 Solomon’sH8010 servantsH5650. 28They sailedH935 to OphirH211 and importedH3947 goldH2091 from thereH8033—420H702H3967H6242 talentsH360312—and deliveredH935 it toH413H4428 SolomonH8010.
