1 Kings 1:5-53
5Now 1AdonijahH138 the sonH1121 of HaggithH2294 exaltedH5375 himself, sayingH559, “I will beH4427 kingH4427.” So 2he preparedH6213 for himself chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571, with fiftyH2572 menH376 to runH7323 beforeH6440 him. 6And his fatherH1 had neverH3808 rebukedH6087 him at anyH4480 timeH3117 by askingH559, “WhyH4069 have you doneH6213 soH3602?” And he was alsoH1571 a veryH3966 handsomeH2896H8389 man, and 34he was bornH3205 afterH310 AbsalomH53. 7Now 5he had conferredH1697H1961 with 6JoabH3097 the sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870 and with 7AbiatharH54 the priestH3548; and they alliedH5826H310 themselves with 8AdonijahH138. 8But 9ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, 10BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, 11NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, 12ShimeiH8096, ReiH7472, and 13the mightyH1368 menH1368 whoH834 belonged to DavidH1732, were not with AdonijahH138.
9AdonijahH138 sacrificedH2076 sheepH6629, oxenH1241, and fattenedH4806 steersH4806 by the 14stoneH68 of ZohelethH2120, whichH834 is besideH681 15En-rogelH5883; and he invitedH7121 allH3605 his brothersH251, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, and allH3605 the menH376 of JudahH3063, the king’sH4428 servantsH5650. 10But he did not inviteH7121 NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, BenaiahH1141, the mightyH1368 menH1368, or his brotherH251 16SolomonH8010.
11Then NathanH5416 spokeH559 to 17BathshebaH1339 the motherH517 of SolomonH8010, sayingH559, “Have you not heardH8085 that AdonijahH138 the sonH1121 of HaggithH2294 has becomeH4427 kingH4427, and DavidH1732 our lordH113 does not knowH3045 it? 12So nowH6258 comeH1980, pleaseH4994 let me 18giveH3289 you adviceH6098, and saveH4422 your lifeH5315 and the lifeH5315 of your sonH1121 SolomonH8010. 13GoH1980 19at onceH935 to KingH4428 DavidH1732 and sayH559 to him, ‘Have you not, my lordH113 the kingH4428, swornH7650 to your servantH519, sayingH559, “20SolomonH8010 your sonH1121 certainlyH3588 shall beH4427 kingH4427 afterH310 me, and he shall sitH3427 on my throneH3678”? WhyH4069 then has AdonijahH138 becomeH4427 kingH4427?’ 14BeholdH2009, while you are stillH5750 thereH8033 speakingH1696 with the kingH4428, I will comeH935 inH935 afterH310 you and confirmH4390 your wordsH1697.”
15So BathshebaH1339 enteredH935 to the kingH4428 in the bedroomH2315. Now 21the kingH4428 wasH2204 veryH3966 oldH2204, and AbishagH49 the ShunammiteH7767 was servingH8334 the kingH4428. 16Then BathshebaH1339 bowedH6915 and prostratedH2331 herself 22before the kingH4428. And the kingH4428 saidH559, “WhatH4100 23is on your mind?” 17So she saidH559 to him, “My lordH113, you yourselfH859 sworeH7650 to your servantH519 by the LordH3068 your GodH430, saying, ‘24Your sonH1121 SolomonH8010 certainlyH3588 shall beH4427 kingH4427 afterH310 me, and he shall sitH3427 on my throneH3678.’ 18But nowH6258, beholdH2009, AdonijahH138 isH4427 kingH4427; and nowH6258, my lordH113 the kingH4428, you do not knowH3045 it. 1925He has sacrificedH2076 oxenH7794 and fattenedH4806 steersH4806 and sheepH6629 in abundanceH7230, and has invitedH7121 allH3605 the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428, AbiatharH54 the priestH3548, and JoabH3097 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635, but he has not invitedH7121 SolomonH8010 your servantH5650. 20And as for you, my lordH113 the kingH4428, the eyesH5869 of allH3605 IsraelH3478 are upon you, to announceH5046 to them whoH4310 shall sitH3427 on the throneH3678 of my lordH113 the kingH4428 afterH310 him. 21Otherwise it will comeH1961 aboutH1961, 26as soon as my lordH113 the kingH4428 27liesH7901 downH7901 with his fathersH1, that I and my sonH1121 SolomonH8010 will be considered 28offendersH2400.”
22And beholdH2009, while she was stillH5750 speakingH1696 with the kingH4428, NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 cameH935 inH935. 23They informedH5046 the kingH4428, sayingH559, “NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 is hereH2009.” And when he cameH935 into the king’s presenceH6440, he prostratedH2331 himself 29before the kingH4428 with his faceH639 to the groundH776. 24Then NathanH5416 saidH559, “My lordH113 the kingH4428, have you yourselfH859 saidH559, ‘AdonijahH138 shall beH4427 kingH4427 afterH310 me, and he shall sitH3427 on my throneH3678’? 2530For he has goneH3381 downH3381 todayH3117 and has sacrificedH2076 oxenH7794 and fattenedH4806 steersH4806 and sheepH6629 in abundanceH7230, and has invitedH7121 allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, the commandersH8269 of the armyH6635, and AbiatharH54 the priestH3548, and beholdH2009, they are eatingH398 and drinkingH8354 in his presenceH6440; and they sayH559, ‘31Long liveH2421 KingH4428 AdonijahH138!’ 2632But me, even me your servantH5650, ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and your servantH5650 SolomonH8010, he has not invitedH7121. 27Has thisH2088 thingH1697 beenH1961 doneH1961 by my lordH113 the kingH4428, and you have not let your 33servantsH5650 knowH3045 whoH4310 shall sitH3427 on the throneH3678 of my lordH113 the kingH4428 afterH310 him?”
28Then KingH4428 DavidH1732 respondedH6030 and saidH559, “SummonH7121 BathshebaH1339 to me.” And she cameH935 into the king’sH4428 presenceH6440 and stoodH5975 beforeH6440 the kingH4428. 29Then the kingH4428 vowedH7650 and saidH559, “34As the LordH3068 livesH2416, whoH834 has redeemedH6299 my lifeH5315 from allH3605 distressH6869, 30certainlyH3588 as 35I vowedH7650 to you by the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, ‘Your sonH1121 SolomonH8010 certainlyH3588 shall beH4427 kingH4427 afterH310 me, and he shall sitH3427 on my throneH3678 inH8478 my placeH8478’; I will indeedH3588 doH6213 soH3651 thisH2088 dayH3117.” 31Then BathshebaH1339 bowedH6915 with her faceH639 to the groundH776, and prostratedH2331 herself before the kingH4428 and saidH559, “36May my lordH113 KingH4428 DavidH1732 liveH2421 foreverH5769.”
32Then KingH4428 DavidH1732 saidH559, “SummonH7121 to me 37ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077.” And they cameH935 into the king’sH4428 presenceH6440. 33And the kingH4428 saidH559 to them, “TakeH3947 with you 38the servantsH5650 of your lordH113, and have my sonH1121 SolomonH8010 rideH7392 on my own muleH6506, and bringH3381 him downH3381 to 39GihonH1521. 34And have ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 40anointH4886 him thereH8033 as kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478, and 41blowH8628 the trumpetH7782 and sayH559, ‘42Long liveH2421 KingH4428 SolomonH8010!’ 35Then you shall comeH5927 upH5927 afterH310 him, and he shall comeH935 and sitH3427 on my throneH3678, and he shall beH4427 kingH4427 inH8478 my placeH8478; for I have appointedH6680 him to be rulerH5057 overH5921 IsraelH3478 and JudahH3063.” 36BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 answeredH6030 the kingH4428 and saidH559, “AmenH543! May the LordH3068, the GodH430 of my lordH113 the kingH4428, sayH559 the sameH3651. 3743JustH3512 asH3512 the LordH3068 has beenH1961 with my lordH113 the kingH4428, soH3651 may He be with SolomonH8010, and 44makeH1431 his throneH3678 greaterH1431 thanH4480 the throneH3678 of my lordH113 KingH4428 DavidH1732!”
38So 45ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, 46the CherethitesH3774, and the PelethitesH6432 wentH3381 downH3381 and had SolomonH8010 rideH7392 on KingH4428 David’sH1732 muleH6506, and broughtH1980 him to 47GihonH1521. 39And ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 then 48tookH3947 the hornH7161 of oilH8081 from the tentH168 and 49anointedH4886 SolomonH8010. Then they 50blewH8628 the trumpetH7782, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 saidH559, “51Long liveH2421 KingH4428 SolomonH8010!” 40And allH3605 the peopleH5971 wentH5927 upH5927 afterH310 him, and the peopleH5971 were playingH2490 on flutesH2485 and rejoicingH8056 with greatH1419 joyH8057, so that the earthH776 52shookH1234 at their noiseH6963.
41Now AdonijahH138 and allH3605 the guestsH7121 whoH834 were with him heardH8085 this as they finishedH3615 eatingH398. When JoabH3097 heardH8085 the soundH6963 of the trumpetH7782, he saidH559, “WhyH4069 is the 53cityH7151 makingH1993 such anH1993 uproarH1993?” 42While he was stillH5750 speakingH1696, beholdH2009, 54JonathanH3083 the sonH1121 of AbiatharH54 the priestH3548 cameH935. Then AdonijahH138 saidH559, “ComeH935 inH935, for 55you are a valiantH2428 manH376 and you bringH1319 goodH2896 newsH1319.” 43But JonathanH3083 repliedH6030 to AdonijahH138, “On the contraryH61! Our lordH113 KingH4428 DavidH1732 has madeH4427 SolomonH8010 kingH4428! 44The kingH4428 has also sentH7971 with him ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, the CherethitesH3774, and the PelethitesH6432; and they have mountedH7392 him on the king’sH4428 muleH6506. 45Furthermore, ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 have anointedH4886 him kingH4428 in GihonH1521, and they have comeH5927 upH5927 from thereH8033 rejoicingH8056, 56so that the cityH7151 is goingH1949 wildH1949. ThisH1931 is the noiseH6963 whichH834 you have heardH8085. 46BesidesH1571, 57SolomonH8010 has evenH1571 takenH3427 his seatH3427 on the throneH3678 of the kingdomH4410. 47MoreoverH1571, the king’sH4428 servantsH5650 cameH935 to blessH1288 our lordH113 KingH4428 DavidH1732, sayingH559, ‘May 58your GodH430 makeH3190 the nameH8034 of SolomonH8010 betterH3190 thanH4480 your nameH8034, and his throneH3678 greaterH1431 thanH4480 your throneH3678!’ And 59the kingH4428 bowedH2331 himself on the bedH4904. 48The kingH4428 has alsoH1571 saidH559 thisH3602: ‘BlessedH1288 be the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, whoH834 60has grantedH5414 one to sitH3427 on my throneH3678 todayH3117 while my own eyesH5869 seeH7200 it.’”
49Then allH3605 the guestsH7121 of AdonijahH138 trembledH2729 and gotH6965 upH6965, and eachH376 wentH1980 on his wayH1870. 50AdonijahH138 also wasH3372 afraidH3372 of SolomonH8010, and he gotH6965 upH6965, and wentH1980, and 61tookH2388 holdH2388 of the hornsH7161 of the altarH4196. 51Now it was reportedH5046 to SolomonH8010, sayingH559, “BeholdH2009, AdonijahH138 isH3372 afraidH3372 of KingH4428 SolomonH8010, for beholdH2009, he has takenH270 holdH270 of the hornsH7161 of the altarH4196, sayingH559, ‘May KingH4428 SolomonH8010 swearH7650 to me todayH3117 that he will not putH4191 his servantH5650 toH4191 deathH4191 with the swordH2719.’” 52And SolomonH8010 saidH559, “IfH518 he is a worthyH2428 manH1121, 62not one of his hairsH8185 will fallH5307 to the groundH776; but ifH518 wickednessH7463 is foundH4672 in him, he will dieH4191.” 53So KingH4428 SolomonH8010 sentH7971 men, and they broughtH3381 him downH3381 from the altarH4196. And he cameH935 and prostratedH2331 himself before KingH4428 SolomonH8010, and SolomonH8010 saidH559 to him, “GoH1980 to your houseH1004.”
