1 Samuel 14:45
45But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die, he who has 1brought about this great 2victory in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, 3not even a hair of his head shall fall to the ground, because 4he has worked with God this day.” So the people 5rescued Jonathan and he did not die.

- King James Version (KJV)And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? - New International Version (NIV)But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! - English Standard Version (ESV)Then the people said to Saul, "Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! - New King James Version (NKJV)But the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has accomplished this great deliverance in Israel? Certainly not! Context of 1 Samuel 14:45
43So Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, and said, “I did indeed taste a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am, I must die!” 44And Saul said, “May God do the same to me and more also, for you shall certainly die, Jonathan!” But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die, he who has brought about this great victory in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, not even a hair of his head shall fall to the ground, because he has worked with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan and he did not die. 46Then Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place. 47Now when Saul had taken control of the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, the sons of Ammon, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines; and wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 45And the people said - "Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid! As the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground." Here was a righteous and impartial jury, who brought in a verdict according to the evidence: No man should die but for a breach of the law of God; but Jonathan hath not broken any law of God; therefore Jonathan should not die. And because he should not, therefore he shall not…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-46Verses 36-46 If God turns away our prayer, we have reason to suspect it is for some sin harboured in our hearts, which we should find out, that we may put it away, and put it to death. We should always first suspect and examine ourselves; but an unhumbled heart suspects every other person, and looks every where but at home for the sinful cause of calamity. Jonathan was discovered to be the offender. Those most indulgent to their own sins are most severe…Read the comment

But the more enlightened conscience of the army prevented the tarnishing the glory of the day by the blood of the young hero, to whose faith and valor it was chiefly…Read the comment
