Context of Mark 13:8
6Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He!’ and they will mislead many. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are only the beginning of birth pains. 9“But be on your guard; for they will hand you over to the courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences. When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to ourselves. And the disciples of Christ, if it be not their own fault, may enjoy holy security and peace of mind, when all around is in disorder. But they must take heed that they are not drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-23Scholars often divide this section into two parts, 13:5–13 and 13:14–23. It is best, however, to interpret all of 13:5–23 as describing events surrounding the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 because: 13:5–23 is the answer from Jesus to the two questions (13:4) that…Read the comment
