Context of John 13:8

6So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” 7Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.” 9Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” 10Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And you are clean--but not all of you.”

Commentaries on John 13:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me - Thou canst not be my disciple unless I wash thee. It is certain Christ did not mean to exclude him from the apostolic office, if he should persist, through the deepest reverence for his Master, to refuse to let him wash his feet: this act of his was emblematical of something spiritual; of something that concerned the salvation of Peter; and without which washing he could neither be an apostle or be finally…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Thou shalt never wash my feet - This was a decided and firm expression of his reverence for his Master, and yet it was improper. Jesus had just declared that it had a meaning, and that he ought to submit to it. We should yield to all the plain and positive requirements of God, even if we cannot now see how obedience would promote his glory. If I wash thee not - This had immediate reference to the act of washing his feet; and it denotes that if Peter had…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8Knowing how committed Peter was to Jesus, it makes sense that he protested. However, Jesus was not just showing Peter how to serve. This was a symbolic introduction of the greater sacrifice Jesus would make on the cross (13:7). Receiving spiritual cleansing from Jesus is necessary for discipleship. If Peter could not accept this act, he could not be a disciple of Jesus.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-116-11. Peter saith ... Lord, dost thou wash my feet?--Our language cannot bring out the intensely vivid contrast between the "Thou" and the "my," which, by bringing them together, the original expresses, for it is not good English to say, "Lord, Thou my feet dost wash?" But every word of this question is emphatic. Thus far, and in the question itself, there was nothing but the most profound and beautiful astonishment at a condescension to him quite…Read the comment
