John 3

The New Birth

1Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named 1Nicodemus, a 2ruler of the Jews; 2this man came to 3Jesus at night and said to Him, “4Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these 56signs that You do unless 7God is with him.” 3Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone 8is born 9again he cannot see 10the kingdom of God.”

4Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” 5Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of 11water and the Spirit, he cannot enter 12the kingdom of God. 613That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born 14again.’ 815The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

9Nicodemus responded and said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10Jesus answered and said to him, “You are 16the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 11Truly, truly, I say to you, 17we speak of what we know and 18testify of what we have seen, and 19you people do not accept our testimony. 12If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 1320No one has ascended into heaven, except 21He who descended from heaven: 22the Son of Man. 14And just as 23Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must 24the Son of Man 25be lifted up, 15so that everyone who 26believes will 27have eternal life in Him.

16“For God so 28loved the world, that He 29gave His 30only Son, so that everyone who 31believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. 17For God 32did not send the Son into the world 33to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. 1834The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of 35the only Son of God. 19And this is the judgment, that 36the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for 37their deeds were evil. 2038For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed. 21But the one who 39practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds will be revealed 40as having been performed in God.”

John the Baptist’s Last Testimony

22After these things Jesus and His 41disciples came into the land of Judea; and there He was spending time with them and 42baptizing. 23Now John also was baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there; and people were coming and being baptized-- 24for 43John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25Then a matter of dispute developed on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about 4445purification. 26And they came to John and said to him, “46Rabbi, He who was with you 47beyond the Jordan, to whom you 48have testified--behold, He is baptizing and all the people are coming to Him.” 27John replied, “49A person can receive not even one thing unless it 50has been given to him from heaven. 28You yourselves 51are my witnesses that I said, ‘52I am not the 53Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29He who has the bride is 54the groom; but the friend of the groom, who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly because of the groom’s voice. So this 55joy of mine has been made full. 30He must 56increase, but I must 57decrease.

31“58He who comes from above is above all; 59the one who is only from the earth is of the earth and speaks of the earth. 60He who comes from heaven is above all. 32What He has seen and heard, of this He 61testifies; and 62no one accepts His testimony. 33The one who has accepted His testimony 63has certified that God is true. 34For He whom God 64sent speaks the words of God; 65for He does not give the Spirit 66sparingly. 3567The Father loves the Son and 68has entrusted all things to His hand. 36The one who 69believes in the Son has eternal life; but the one who 70does not 71obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
