Context of Isaiah 32:18

16Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, And righteousness will remain in the fertile field. 17And the work of righteousness will be peace, And the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. Then my people will live in a peaceful settlement, In secure dwellings, and in undisturbed resting places; 19And it will hail when the forest comes down, And the city will be utterly laid low. 20How blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters, Who let the ox and the donkey out freely.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation - In cities and towns that would not be alarmed bv internal or external foes. And in sure dwellings - In dwellings that would be secure from invasion. - All this is descriptive of the peaceful times, and the general security which followed the return from Babylon. To this period of happiness and prosperity, Isaiah, as well as the other prophets, often refers.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-20Verses 9-20 When there was so much provocation given to the holy God, bad times might be expected. Alas! how many careless ones there are, who support self-indulgence by shameful niggardliness! We deserve to be deprived of the supports of life, when we make them the food of lusts. Let such tremble and be troubled. Blessed times shall be brought in by the pouring out of the Spirit from on high; then, and not till then, there will be good times. The present…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18Living safely and feeling at peace were blessings of Israel's agreement with the Lord (see Leviticus 26:5–6). However, the people's sins had brought curses instead of blessings (compare Isaiah 32:9–11).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-209-20. Address to the women of Jerusalem who troubled themselves little about the political signs of the times, but lived a life of self-indulgence (Is 3:16-23); the failure of food through the devastations of the enemy is here foretold, being what was most likely to affect them as mothers of families, heretofore accustomed to every luxury. Vitringa understands "women--daughters" as the cities and villages of Judea (Eze 16:1-63). See Am 6:1.Read the comment
