Context of Isaiah 22:14
12Therefore on that day the Lord God of armies called you to weeping, to wailing, To shaving the head, and to wearing sackcloth. 13Instead, there is joy and jubilation, Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, Eating of meat and drinking of wine: “Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.” But the Lord of armies revealed Himself to me: “Certainly this wrongdoing will not be forgiven you Until you die,” says the Lord God of armies. 15This is what the Lord God of armies says: “Come, go to this steward, To Shebna who is in charge of the royal household, 16‘What right do you have here, And whom do you have here, That you have cut out a tomb for yourself here, You who cut out a tomb on the height, You who carve a resting place for yourself in the rock?

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14It was revealed in mine ears "The voice of Jehovah" - The Vulgate has vox Domini; as if in his copy he had read יהוה קול kol Yehovah ; and in truth, without the word קול kol, voice, it is not easy to make out the sense of the passage; as appears from the strange versions which the rest of the ancients, (except the Chaldee), and many of the moderns, have given of it; as if the matter were revealed in or to the ears of Jehovah: , in the ears of the Lord…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14It was revealed in mine ears, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you until ye die - That is, the sin is so aggravated that it shall never be expiated or pardoned. Few sins can be more aggravated than revelry and riot, thoughtlessness and mirth over the grave. Nothing can show a more decided disregard of God, and nothing a more grovelling and sensual disposition. And yet, it is the common sin of the world; and there can be nothing more…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The weakness of Judah now appeared more than ever. Now also they discovered their carnal confidence and their carnal security. They looked to the fortifications. They made sure of water for the city. But they were regardless of God in all these preparations. They did not care for his glory in what they did. They did not depend upon him for a blessing on their endeavours. For every creature is to us what God makes it to be; and we must bless…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14this sin of yours will never be atoned for: The people of Judah kept adding sin to sin. Because of this, God would rightly judge and condemn them. "Shebna," too (Is 22:15), was scribe at this time (Is 36:3) [Maurer].
