Context of Isaiah 22:14
12On that day the Lord God of Armies called for weeping, for wailing, for shaven heads, and for the wearing of sackcloth. 13But look: joy and gladness, butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep and goats, eating of meat, and drinking of wine — “Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!” The Lord of Armies has directly revealed to me: “This iniquity will not be wiped out for you people as long as you live.” The Lord God of Armies has spoken. 15The Lord God of Armies said, “Go to Shebna, that steward who is in charge of the palace, and say to him: 16What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a resting place for yourself out of rock?

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14It was revealed in mine ears "The voice of Jehovah" - The Vulgate has vox Domini; as if in his copy he had read יהוה קול kol Yehovah ; and in truth, without the word קול kol, voice, it is not easy to make out the sense of the passage; as appears from the strange versions which the rest of the ancients, (except the Chaldee), and many of the moderns, have given of it; as if the matter were revealed in or to the ears of Jehovah: , in the ears of the Lord…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14It was revealed in mine ears, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you until ye die - That is, the sin is so aggravated that it shall never be expiated or pardoned. Few sins can be more aggravated than revelry and riot, thoughtlessness and mirth over the grave. Nothing can show a more decided disregard of God, and nothing a more grovelling and sensual disposition. And yet, it is the common sin of the world; and there can be nothing more…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The weakness of Judah now appeared more than ever. Now also they discovered their carnal confidence and their carnal security. They looked to the fortifications. They made sure of water for the city. But they were regardless of God in all these preparations. They did not care for his glory in what they did. They did not depend upon him for a blessing on their endeavours. For every creature is to us what God makes it to be; and we must bless…Read the comment

"Shebna," too (Is 22:15), was scribe at this time (Is 36:3) [Maurer].
