Context of Isaiah 22:14
12Now in that day, Adonai Elohei-Tzva’ot will call for weeping and wailing, for baldness and putting on sackcloth. 13But instead, there is joy and gladness, slaughtering cattle and killing sheep, meat and drinking wine! “Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die!” But Adonai-Tzva’ot revealed in my ears: “Surely this sin will not be atoned for until you die,” says my Lord Adonai-Tzva’ot. 15Thus says my Lord Adonai-Tzva’ot: “Go, say to this steward, to Shebna, who is over the house: 16‘What are you doing here, and who are you to be here, that you cut out a grave for yourself, carving out a tomb on the height, chiseling a crypt for yourself in the rock?

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14It was revealed in mine ears "The voice of Jehovah" - The Vulgate has vox Domini; as if in his copy he had read יהוה קול kol Yehovah ; and in truth, without the word קול kol, voice, it is not easy to make out the sense of the passage; as appears from the strange versions which the rest of the ancients, (except the Chaldee), and many of the moderns, have given of it; as if the matter were revealed in or to the ears of Jehovah: , in the ears of the Lord…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14It was revealed in mine ears, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you until ye die - That is, the sin is so aggravated that it shall never be expiated or pardoned. Few sins can be more aggravated than revelry and riot, thoughtlessness and mirth over the grave. Nothing can show a more decided disregard of God, and nothing a more grovelling and sensual disposition. And yet, it is the common sin of the world; and there can be nothing more…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The weakness of Judah now appeared more than ever. Now also they discovered their carnal confidence and their carnal security. They looked to the fortifications. They made sure of water for the city. But they were regardless of God in all these preparations. They did not care for his glory in what they did. They did not depend upon him for a blessing on their endeavours. For every creature is to us what God makes it to be; and we must bless…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14this sin of yours will never be atoned for: The people of Judah kept adding sin to sin. Because of this, God would rightly judge and condemn them. This warning looked ahead to the exile. The exile happened in 586 BC. However, Isaiah was already warning about it as early as 701 BC.Read the comment

"Shebna," too (Is 22:15), was scribe at this time (Is 36:3) [Maurer].
