Context of Exodus 38:8
6And he made the poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with bronze. 7Then he put the poles into the rings on the sides of the altar, with which to bear it. He made the altar hollow with boards. He made the laver of bronze and its base of bronze, from the bronze mirrors of the serving women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 9Then he made the court on the south side; the hangings of the court were of fine woven linen, one hundred cubits long. 10There were twenty pillars for them, with twenty bronze sockets. The hooks of the pillars and their bands were silver.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8He made the laver - See Clarke's note on Exodus 30:18, etc. The looking-glasses - The word מראת maroth, from ראה raah, he saw, signifies reflectors or mirrors of any kind. Here metal, highly polished, must certainly be meant, as glass was not yet in use; and had it even been in use, we are sure that looking - Glasses could not make a Brazen laver. The word therefore should be rendered mirrors, not looking-glasses, which in the above verse is perfectly…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The plans for the bronze basin were part of the instructions to the priests (30:17–21; 29:38–30:38). Here, however, the text reports how the basin was built, following a logical order. This bronze, which they could polish to look like mirrors, was probably of very high quality. It was suitable for use in God's Tent of Meeting.Read the comment
