Context of Exodus 38:8
6He made the poles from acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze. 7He inserted the poles through the rings on the sides of the altar. The altar was hollow and was made from planks. Bezalel made the bronze washbasin and its bronze stand from bronze mirrors donated by the women who served at the entrance of the Tabernacle. 9Then Bezalel made the courtyard, which was enclosed with curtains made of finely woven linen. On the south side the curtains were 150 feet long. 10They were held up by twenty posts set securely in twenty bronze bases. He hung the curtains with silver hooks and rings.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8He made the laver - See Clarke's note on Exodus 30:18, etc. The looking-glasses - The word מראת maroth, from ראה raah, he saw, signifies reflectors or mirrors of any kind. Here metal, highly polished, must certainly be meant, as glass was not yet in use; and had it even been in use, we are sure that looking - Glasses could not make a Brazen laver. The word therefore should be rendered mirrors, not looking-glasses, which in the above verse is perfectly…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8See the marginal reference. The women who assembled at the entrance of the tent of meeting were most probably devout women who loved the public service of religion. The giving up of their mirrors for the use of the sanctuary was a fit sacrifice for such women to make (compare Exodus 35:22 note).Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The plans for the bronze basin were part of the instructions to the priests (30:17–21; 29:38–30:38). Here, however, the text reports how the basin was built, following a logical order. This bronze, which they could polish to look like mirrors, was probably of very high quality. It was suitable for use in God's Tent of Meeting.Read the comment
