Context of 2 Timothy 2:14

12If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He will also deny us; 13If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. Remind them of these things, and solemnly exhort them in the presence of God not to dispute about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the listeners. 15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 16But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,

Commentaries on 2 Timothy 2:14

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14That they strive not about words - Words, not things, have been a most fruitful source of contention in the Christian world; and among religious people, the principal cause of animosity has arisen from the different manner of apprehending the same term, while, in essence, both meant the same thing. All preachers and divines should be very careful, both in speaking and writing, to explain the terms they use, and never employ them in any sense but that in…Read the comment
