Jonah’s Displeasure Rebuked
1But it greatlyH1419 displeasedH7489 JonahH3124 and he becameH2734 1angryH2734. 2He 2prayedH6419 to the LordH3068 and saidH559, “PleaseH577 LordH3068, was not thisH2088 3whatH1697 I saidH1696 whileH5704 I was stillH5704 in my own countryH127? ThereforeH5921H3651 4in order to forestallH6923 this I 5fledH1272 to TarshishH8659, for I knewH3045 that You are a 6graciousH2587 and compassionateH7349 GodH410, slowH750 to angerH639 and abundantH7227 in lovingkindnessH2617, and one who relentsH5162 concerningH5921 calamityH7463. 3Therefore nowH6258, O LordH3068, pleaseH4994 7takeH3947 my 8lifeH5315 from me, for deathH4194 is 9betterH2896 to me thanH4480 lifeH2425.” 4The LordH3068 saidH559, “Do you have goodH3190 reasonH3190 to be angryH2734?”
5Then JonahH3124 wentH3318 out from the cityH5892 and satH3427 eastH6924 of 10it. ThereH8033 he madeH6213 a shelterH5521 for himself and 11satH3427 underH8478 it in the shadeH6738 untilH5704H834 he could seeH7200 whatH4100 would happenH1961 in the cityH5892. 6So the LordH3068 GodH430 appointedH4487 a 12plantH7021 and it grewH5927 up overH4480H5921 JonahH3124 to be a shadeH6738 overH5921 his headH7218 to deliverH5337 him from his discomfortH7463. And JonahH3124 was 13extremelyH8057H1419 happyH8055 aboutH5921 the 14plantH7021. 7But GodH430 appointedH4487 a wormH8439 when dawnH7837 cameH5927 the nextH4283 dayH4283 and it attackedH5221 the plantH7021 and it 15witheredH3001. 8When the sunH8121 cameH2224 up GodH430 appointedH4487 a scorchingH2759 16eastH6921 windH7307, and the 17sunH8121 beatH5221 downH5221 on Jonah’sH3124 headH7218 so that he becameH5968 faintH5968 and beggedH7592 with all his soulH5315 to dieH4191, sayingH559, “18DeathH4194 is betterH2896 to me thanH4480 lifeH2425.”
9Then GodH430 saidH559 to JonahH3124, “Do you have goodH3190 reasonH3190 to be angryH2734 aboutH5921 the plantH7021?” And he saidH559, “I have goodH3190 reasonH3190 to be angryH2734, even to deathH4194.” 10Then the LordH3068 saidH559, “You hadH2347 compassionH2347 on the plantH7021 for whichH834 you did not workH5998 and which you did not cause to growH1431, whichH7945 19cameH1961 up overnightH1121H3915 and perishedH6 20overnightH1121H3915. 11Should I not 21haveH2347 compassionH2347 on NinevehH5210, the greatH1419 cityH5892 in whichH834 thereH3426 are moreH7235 thanH4480 120,000H8147H6240H7239 personsH120 whoH834 do not 22knowH3045 the difference betweenH996 their rightH3225 and leftH8040 handH8040, as well as manyH7227 23animalsH929?”
