Uzziah Succeeds Amaziah in Judah

1And allH3605 the peopleH5971 of JudahH3063 tookH3947 1UzziahH5818, whoH1931 was sixteenH8337H6240 yearsH8141 oldH1121, and madeH4427 him kingH4427 in the placeH8478 of his fatherH1 AmaziahH558. 2He builtH1129 ElothH359 and restoredH7725 it to JudahH3063 afterH310 the kingH4428 sleptH7901 with his fathersH1. 3UzziahH5818 was 2sixteenH8337H6240 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he becameH4427 kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 fifty-twoH2572 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389; and his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was 3JechiliahH3203 of JerusalemH3389. 4He didH6213 rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068 according to allH3605 that his fatherH1 AmaziahH558 had doneH6213. 54He continuedH1961 to seekH1245 GodH430 in the daysH3117 of ZechariahH2148, 5who had understandingH995 6through the visionH7200 of GodH430; and 78as longH3117 as he soughtH1875 the LordH3068, GodH430 prosperedH6743 him.

Uzziah Succeeds in War

6Now he wentH3318 out and 9warredH3898 against the PhilistinesH6430, and brokeH6555 downH6555 the wallH2346 of GathH1661 and the wallH2346 of JabnehH2996 and the wallH2346 of AshdodH795; and he builtH1129 citiesH5892 in the area of AshdodH795 and among the PhilistinesH6430. 710GodH430 helpedH5826 him againstH5921 the PhilistinesH6430, and againstH5921 the ArabiansH6163 who livedH3427 in Gur-baalH1485, and the MeunitesH4586. 8The AmmonitesH5984 also gaveH5414 11tributeH4503 to UzziahH5818, and his 12fameH8034 extendedH1980 to the borderH935 of EgyptH4714, for he becameH2388 veryH4605 strongH2388. 9Moreover, UzziahH5818 builtH1129 towersH4026 in JerusalemH3389 at 13the CornerH6438 GateH8179 and at the 14ValleyH1516 GateH8179 and at the cornerH4740 buttressH4740 and fortifiedH2388 them. 10He builtH1129 towersH4026 in the wildernessH4057 and 15hewedH2672 manyH7227 cisternsH953, for he hadH1961 muchH7227 livestockH4735, both in the 16lowlandH8219 and in the plainH4334. He also had plowmenH406 and vinedressersH3755 in the hillH2022 countryH2022 and the fertileH3759 fieldsH3759, for he lovedH157 the soilH127. 11Moreover, UzziahH5818 hadH1961 an armyH2428 readyH6213 for battleH4421, which 17enteredH3318 combatH6635 by divisionsH1416 according to the numberH4557 of their musterH6486, 18preparedH3027 by JeielH3262 the scribeH5613 and MaaseiahH4641 the officialH7860, underH5921 the directionH3027 of HananiahH2608, one of the king’sH4428 officersH8269. 12The totalH3605 numberH4557 of the headsH7218 of the 19householdsH1, of valiantH2428 warriorsH1368, was 2,600H505H8337H3967. 13UnderH5921 their directionH3027 was an 20eliteH2428 armyH2428 of 21307,500H7969H3967H505H7651H2568, who could wageH6213 warH4421 with greatH2428 powerH3581, to helpH5826 the kingH4428 againstH5921 the enemyH340. 14Moreover, UzziahH5818 preparedH3559 22for allH3605 the armyH6635 shieldsH4043, spearsH7420, helmetsH3553, bodyH8302 armorH8302, bowsH7198 and slingH7050 stonesH68. 15In JerusalemH3389 he madeH6213 enginesH2810 of war inventedH4284 by skillfulH2803 men to be on the towersH4026 and on the cornersH6438 for the purpose of shootingH3372 arrowsH2671 and greatH1419 stonesH68. Hence his 23fameH8034 spreadH3318 afarH5704H7350, for he was marvelouslyH6381 helpedH5826 untilH5704H3588 he was strongH2388.

Pride Is Uzziah’s Undoing

16But 24when he becameH2388 strongH2393, his heartH3820 was so 25proudH1361 that he actedH7843 corruptlyH7843, and he was unfaithfulH4603 to the LordH3068 his GodH430, for 26he enteredH935 the templeH1964 of the LordH3068 to burnH6999 incenseH6999 on the altarH4196 of incenseH7004. 17Then 27AzariahH5838 the priestH3548 enteredH935 afterH310 him and with him eightyH8084 priestsH3548 of the LordH3068, valiantH2428 menH1121. 1828They opposedH5975 UzziahH5818 the kingH4428 and saidH559 to him, “29It is not for you, UzziahH5818, to burnH6999 incenseH6999 to the LordH3068, 30but for the priestsH3548, the sonsH1121 of AaronH175 who are consecratedH6942 to burnH6999 incenseH6999. GetH3318 out of the sanctuaryH4720, for you have beenH4603 unfaithfulH4603 and will have noH3808 honorH3519 from the LordH3068 GodH430.” 19But UzziahH5818, with a censerH4730 in his handH3027 for burningH6999 incenseH6999, was enragedH2196; and while he was enragedH2196 with the priestsH3548, 31the leprosyH6883 brokeH2224 out on his foreheadH4696 beforeH6440 the priestsH3548 in the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, besideH4480H5921 the altarH4196 of incenseH7004. 20AzariahH5838 the chiefH7218 priestH3548 and allH3605 the priestsH3548 lookedH6437 at him, and beholdH2009, he was leprousH6879 on his foreheadH4696; and they hurriedH926 him out of thereH8033, and he himselfH1931 alsoH1571 hastenedH1765 to getH3318 out becauseH3588 the LordH3068 had smittenH5060 him. 2132KingH4428 UzziahH5818 was a leperH6879 to the dayH3117 of his deathH4194; and he livedH3427 in 33a separateH2669 houseH1004, beingH6879 a leperH6879, for he was cutH1504 offH1504 from the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. And JothamH3147 his sonH1121 was overH5921 the king’sH4428 houseH1004 judgingH8199 the peopleH5971 of the landH776.

22Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of UzziahH5818, firstH7223 to lastH314, the prophetH5030 34IsaiahH3470, the sonH1121 of AmozH531, has writtenH3789. 23So UzziahH5818 sleptH7901 with his fathersH1, and they buriedH6912 him with his fathersH1 35in the fieldH7704 of the graveH6900 whichH834 belonged to the kingsH4428, for they saidH559, “He is a leperH6879.” And JothamH3147 his sonH1121 becameH4427 kingH4427 in his placeH8478.
