Acts 2
The Day of Pentecost
1When 1the day of Pentecost 2had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled 3the whole house where they were sitting. 3And there appeared to them tongues as of fire 4distributing themselves, and 5they 6rested on each one of them. 4And they were all 7filled with the Holy Spirit and began to 8speak with other 9tongues, as the Spirit was giving them 10utterance.
5Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, 11devout men from every nation under heaven. 6And when 12this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own 13language. 714They were amazed and astonished, saying, “15Why, are not all these who are speaking 16Galileans? 8And how is it that we each hear them in our own 17language 18to which we were born? 9Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and 19Cappadocia, 20Pontus and 2122Asia, 1023Phrygia and 24Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around 25Cyrene, and 2627visitors from Rome, both Jews and 2829proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs--we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.” 12And 30they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But others were mocking and saying, “31They are full of 32sweet wine.”
Peter’s Sermon
14But Peter, 33taking his stand with 34the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. 15For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, 35for it is only the 36third hour of the day; 16but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:17‘37And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all 38mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;18Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.19And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.20The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.21And it shall be that 39everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
22“Men of Israel, listen to these words: 40Jesus the Nazarene, 41a man 42attested to you by God with 43miracles and 44wonders and 45signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know-- 23this Man, delivered over by the 46predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, 47you nailed to a cross by the hands of 48godless men and put Him to death. 2449But 50God raised Him up again, putting an end to the 51agony of death, since it 52was impossible for Him to be held 53in its power. 25For David says of Him, ‘54I saw the Lord always in my presence; For He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken.26Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; Moreover my flesh also will live in hope;27Because You will not abandon my soul to 55Hades, 56Nor 57allow Your 58Holy One to 59undergo decay.28You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’
29“60Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the 61patriarch David that he both 62died and 63was buried, and 64his tomb is 65with us to this day. 30And so, because he was 66a prophet and knew that 67God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one 68of his descendants on his throne, 31he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of 69the Christ, that 70He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh 71suffer decay. 32This Jesus 72God raised up again, to which we are all 73witnesses. 33Therefore having been exalted 7475to the right hand of God, and 76having received from the Father 77the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has 78poured forth this which you both see and hear. 34For it was not David who ascended into 79heaven, but he himself says: ‘80The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand,35Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’ 36Therefore let all the 81house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both 82Lord and 83Christ--this Jesus 84whom you crucified.”
The Ingathering
37Now when they heard this, they were 85pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “86Brethren, 8788what shall we do?” 38Peter said to them, “89Repent, and each of you be 90baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For 91the promise is for you and your children and for all who are 92far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40And with many other words he solemnly 93testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “94Be saved from this 95perverse generation!” 41So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand 9697souls. 42They were 98continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to 99the breaking of bread and 100101to prayer.
43102Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many 103wonders and 104signs were taking place through the apostles. 44And all those who had believed 105were together and 106had all things in common; 45and they 107began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46108Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and 109breaking bread 110from house to house, they were taking their 111meals together with gladness and 112sincerity of heart, 47praising God and 113having favor with all the people. And the Lord 114was adding 115to their number day by day 116those who were being saved.
