David Anointed King of All Israel

(2 Samuel 5:1–5)

1Then allH3605 IsraelH3478 came togetherH6908 toH413 DavidH1732 at HebronH2275 and saidH559, “HereH2009 weH587 are, your own fleshH1320 and bloodH6106. 2EvenH1571H8543 in times pastH8032H1571,1 while SaulH7586 wasH1961 kingH4428, youH859 were the one who ledH3318 Israel outH3478 and brought them backH935. And the LORDH3068 your GodH430 saidH559, ‘YouH859 will shepherdH7462 My peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, and youH859 will beH1961 rulerH5057 overH5921 them.’”

3So allH3605 the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478 cameH935 toH413 the kingH4428 at HebronH2275, where DavidH1732 madeH3772 a covenantH1285 with them beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. And they anointedH4886 him kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478, according to the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 throughH3027 SamuelH8050.

David Conquers Jerusalem

(2 Samuel 5:6–11)

4Then DavidH1732 and allH3605 the IsraelitesH3478 marchedH1980 to JerusalemH3389 (that isH1931, JebusH2982), whereH8033 the JebusitesH2983 inhabitedH3427 the landH776.

5The peopleH3427 of JebusH2982 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “You will neverH3808 get inH935 hereH2008.”

Nevertheless, DavidH1732 capturedH3920 the fortressH4686 of ZionH6726 (that isH1931, the CityH5892 of DavidH1732).

6Now DavidH1732 had saidH559, “WhoeverH3605 is the firstH7223 to strike downH5221 a JebusiteH2983 will becomeH1961 chiefH8269 commanderH7218.”

And JoabH3097 sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870 went upH5927 firstH7223, and he becameH1961 the chiefH7218.

7So DavidH1732 took up residenceH3427 in the fortressH4679; that is whyH5921H3651 it was calledH7121 the CityH5892 of DavidH1732. 8He built upH1129 the cityH5892 around itH5439, fromH4480 the supporting terracesH44072 toH5704 the surrounding wallH5439, while JoabH3097 restoredH2421 the restH7605 of the cityH5892.

9And DavidH1732 becameH1980 greaterH1980 and greaterH1431, for the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635 was with himH5973.

David’s Mighty Men

(2 Samuel 23:8–39)

10Now theseH428 were the chiefsH7218 of David’sH1732 mighty menH1368, whoH834, together withH5973 allH3605 IsraelH3478, bolsteredH4427 and strengthenedH2388 his kingdomH4438, according toH5973 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 concerningH5921 IsraelH3478. 11ThisH428 is the listH4557 of David’sH1732 mighty menH1368:

JashobeamH3434 sonH1121 of HachmoniH2453 was chiefH7218 of the officersH7970;3 heH1931 wieldedH5782 his spearH2595 againstH5921 threeH7969 hundred menH3967, whom he killedH2491 at oneH259 timeH6471.

12Next in command wasH310 EleazarH499 sonH1121 of DodoH17344 the AhohiteH266H1931, one of the threeH7969 mighty menH1368. 13HeH1931 wasH1961 withH5973 DavidH1732 at Pas-dammimH6450 when the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH622 thereH8033 for battleH4421. AtH1961 a placeH2513 with a fieldH7704 full ofH4392 barleyH8184, the troopsH5971 fledH5127 fromH6440 the PhilistinesH6430. 14But Eleazar and David stationed themselvesH33205 in the middleH8432 of the fieldH2513 and defended itH5337. They struck downH5221 the PhilistinesH6430, and the LORDH3068 brought aboutH3467 a greatH1419 victoryH8668.

15ThreeH7969 ofH4480 the thirtyH7970 chief menH7218 went downH3381 toH413 DavidH1732, toH5921 the rockH6697 atH413 the caveH4631 of AdullamH5725, while a companyH4264 of PhilistinesH6430 was encampedH2583 in the ValleyH6010 of RephaimH7497. 16At that timeH227 DavidH1732 was in the strongholdH4686, and the garrisonH5333 of the PhilistinesH6430H227 was at BethlehemH1035. 17DavidH1732 longed for waterH183 and saidH559, “Oh, that someoneH4310 would get me a drinkH8248 of waterH4325 from the wellH953 near the gateH8179 of BethlehemH1035!”

18So the ThreeH7969 brokeH1234 through the PhilistineH6430 campH4264, drewH7579 waterH4325 from the wellH953 at the gateH8179H5375 of BethlehemH1035, and brought itH935 back toH413 DavidH1732. But heH1732 refusedH3808H14 to drink itH8354; instead, he poured it outH5258 to the LORDH3068, 19sayingH559, “Far be itH2486 from me, my GodH430, to doH6213 thisH2063! How can I drinkH8354 the bloodH1818 of theseH428 menH582 who risked their livesH5315?” BecauseH3588 they had brought itH935 at the risk of their livesH5315, David refusedH14H3808 to drink itH8354.

SuchH428 were the exploitsH6213 of the threeH7969 mighty menH1368.

20Now AbishaiH52, the brotherH251 of JoabH3097, wasH1961 chiefH7218 of the ThreeH7969H1931,6 and heH1931 wieldedH5782 his spearH2595 againstH5921 threeH7969 hundredH3967 men, killedH2491 them, and wonH3808 a nameH8034 along with the ThreeH7969. 21He was doublyH8147 honoredH3513 aboveH4480 the ThreeH7969, and he becameH1961 their commanderH8269H5704, even though he was notH3808 includedH935 among the ThreeH7969.

22And BenaiahH1141 sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 was a manH1121H376 of valorH2428 fromH4480 KabzeelH6909, a man of manyH7227 exploitsH6467. He struck downH5221 twoH8147 championsH739 of MoabH4124,7 and on a snowyH7950 dayH3117 heH1931 went downH3381 intoH8432 a pitH953 and killedH5221 a lionH738. 23HeH1931 also struck downH5221 an EgyptianH4713, a hugeH376 manH4060 fiveH2568 cubitsH520 tall.8 Although the EgyptianH4713 had a spearH2595 like a weaver’sH707 beamH4500 in his handH3027, Benaiah went againstH3381 himH413 with a clubH7626, snatchedH1497 the spearH2595 fromH4713 his handH3027, and killedH2026 the Egyptian with his own spearH2595. 24TheseH428 were the exploitsH6213 of BenaiahH1141 sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, who won a nameH8034 along with the threeH7969 mighty menH1368. 25He was most honoredH3513 amongH4480 the ThirtyH7970H2005, but heH1931 did notH3808 becomeH935 one ofH413 the ThreeH7969. And DavidH1732 appointed himH7760 overH5921 his guardH4928.

26Now these were the mighty menH1368H2428:
