David’s Family Grows
(2 Samuel 5:12–16)
1Now HiramH2438 kingH4428 of TyreH6865 sentH7971 envoysH4397 toH413 DavidH1732, along with cedarH730 logsH6086, stonemasonsH2796H7023, and carpentersH2796H6086, to buildH1129 a palaceH1004 for him. 2And DavidH1732 realizedH3045 thatH3588 the LORDH3068 had established himH3559 as kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478 andH3588 had highlyH4605 exaltedH5375 his kingdomH4438 for the sakeH5668 of His peopleH5971 IsraelH3478.
3And DavidH1732 tookH3947 moreH5750 wivesH802 in JerusalemH3389 and became the fatherH3205 of moreH5750 sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323. 4TheseH428 are the namesH8034 of the children bornH3205 to him in JerusalemH3389: ShammuaH8051,1 ShobabH7727, NathanH5416, SolomonH8010, 5IbharH2984, ElishuaH474, ElpeletH467, 6NogahH5052, NephegH5298, JaphiaH3309, 7ElishamaH476, BeeliadaH1182,2 and ElipheletH467.
Two Victories over the Philistines
(2 Samuel 5:17–25)
8When the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085 thatH3588 DavidH1732 had been anointedH4886 kingH4428 overH5921 allH3605 IsraelH3478, theyH6430 allH3605 wentH5927 in searchH1245 ofH1732 him; but DavidH1732 learnedH8085 of this and went outH3318 to face themH6440.
9Now the PhilistinesH6430 had comeH935 and raidedH6584 the ValleyH6010 of RephaimH7497. 10So DavidH1732 inquiredH7592 of GodH430, “Should I go upH5927 againstH5921 the PhilistinesH6430? Will You deliver themH5414 into my handH3027?”
“GoH5927,” repliedH559 the LORDH3068, “for I will deliver themH5414 into your handH3027.”
11So David and his men went upH5927 to Baal-perazimH1188, whereH1732 he defeatedH5221 the PhilistinesH8033 and saidH559, “Like a burstingH6556 floodH4325, GodH430 has burst outH6555 against my enemiesH341 by my handH3027.” SoH5921H3651 they calledH7121H8034 thatH1931 placeH1188H4725 Baal-perazimH1188.3 12ThereH8033 the Philistines abandonedH5800 their godsH430, and DavidH1732 orderedH559 that they be burnedH8313 in the fireH784.
13Once againH3254H5750 the PhilistinesH6430 raidedH6584 the valleyH6010. 14So DavidH1732 againH5750 inquiredH7592 of GodH430, whoH430 answeredH559 him, “Do notH3808 march upH5927 after themH310, but circle aroundH5437 themH5921 and attackH935 them in front ofH4136 the balsam treesH1057.4 15As soon asH1961 you hearH8085 the soundH6963 of marchingH6807 in the topsH7218 of the balsam treesH1057, move outH227H3318 to battleH4421, because this will mean thatH3588 GodH430 has gone outH3318 before youH6440 to strikeH5221 the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430.”
16So DavidH1732 didH6213 asH834 GodH430 had commanded himH6680, and they struck downH5221 the army ofH4264 the PhilistinesH6430 all the wayH5704 from GibeonH1391 to GezerH1507. 17And David’sH1732 fameH8034 went outH3318 into everyH3605 landH776, and the LORDH3068 causedH5414 allH3605 nationsH1471 to fear himH6343H5921.
