Gideon’s Three Hundred Chosen Men
1Then 1JerubbaalH3378 (that is, GideonH1439) and allH3605 the peopleH5971 whoH834 were with him gotH7925 upH7925 earlyH7925, and campedH2583 besideH5921 2the springH5871 of HarodH2730; and the campH4264 of MidianH4080 was on the northH6828 sideH6828 of 3them by the hillH1389 of 4MorehH4176 in the valleyH6010.
2And the LordH3068 saidH559 to GideonH1439, “The peopleH5971 whoH834 are with you are tooH4480 manyH7227 for Me to handH5414H3027 MidianH4080 overH5414 to them, 5otherwiseH6435 IsraelH3478 would 6becomeH6286 boastfulH6286, sayingH559, ‘My own 7powerH3027 has savedH3467 me.’ 3NowH6258 therefore comeH4994, proclaimH7121 in the hearingH241 of the peopleH5971, sayingH559, ‘8WhoeverH4310 isH3372 afraidH3372 and worriedH2730, is to returnH7725 and leaveH6852H4480 MountH2022 GileadH1568.’” So twenty-twoH6242H8147 thousandH505 from the peopleH5971 returnedH7725, but tenH6235 thousandH505 remainedH7604.
49Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to GideonH1439, “The peopleH5971 are stillH5750 too manyH7227; bringH3381 them downH3381 to the waterH4325 and I will testH6884 them for you thereH8033. So it shall be that he of whomH834 I sayH559 to you, ‘ThisH2088 oneH2088 shall goH1980 with you,’ he shall goH1980 with you; but everyoneH3605 of whomH834 I sayH559 to you, ‘ThisH2088 oneH2088 shall not goH1980 with you,’ he shall not goH1980.” 5So he broughtH3381 the peopleH5971 downH3381 to the waterH4325. Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to GideonH1439, “You shall putH3322 everyoneH3605 whoH834 lapsH3952 the waterH4325 with his tongueH3956 as a dogH3611 lapsH3952 10in oneH905 groupH905, and everyoneH3605 whoH834 kneelsH1290H3766 downH3766 to drinkH8354 in another.” 6Now the numberH4557 of those who lappedH3952, 11putting their handH3027 to their mouthH6310, was threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376; but allH3605 the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 kneeledH3766H1290 downH3766 to drinkH8354 waterH4325. 7And the LordH3068 saidH559 to GideonH1439, “I will saveH3467 you 12with the threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 who lappedH3952, and will handH5414H3027 the MidianitesH4080 overH5414 to you; so have allH3605 the other peopleH5971 goH1980, eachH376 manH376 to his 13homeH4725.” 8So 14the three hundred men tookH3947 the people’sH5971 provisionsH6720 and their trumpetsH7782 in their handsH3027. And 15Gideon dismissedH7971 allH3605 the other menH376 of IsraelH3478, eachH376 to his tentH168, but retainedH2388 the threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376; and the campH4264 of MidianH4080 was belowH4480H8478 him in the valleyH6010.
9Now on the sameH1931 nightH3915 it cameH1961 aboutH1961 that the LordH3068 saidH559 to him, “AriseH6965, goH3381 downH3381 against the campH4264, 16for I have handedH5414H3027 it overH5414 to you. 10But ifH518 you are afraidH3372 to goH3381 downH3381, goH3381 with PurahH6513 your servantH5288 downH3381 to the campH4264, 11so that you will hearH8085 whatH4100 they sayH1696; and 17afterwardH310 18you will haveH2388 the courageH3027H2388 to goH3381 downH3381 against the campH4264.” So he wentH3381 downH3381 with PurahH6513 his servantH5288 to the 19outpostsH7097 of the armyH2571 that was in the campH4264. 12Now the MidianitesH4080, the AmalekitesH6002, and allH3605 the 20peopleH1121 of the eastH6924 were lyingH5307 in the valleyH6010 21as numerousH7230 as locustsH697; and their camelsH1581 were withoutH369 numberH4557, 22as numerousH7230 as the sandH2344 on the seashoreH3220H8193. 13When GideonH1439 cameH935, beholdH2009, a manH376 was relatingH5608 a dreamH2472 to his friendH7453. And he saidH559, “BeholdH2009, I 23hadH2492 a dreamH2472; 24a loafH6742 of barleyH8184 breadH3899 was tumblingH2015 into the campH4264 of MidianH4080, and it cameH935 to the tentH168 and struckH5221 it so that it fellH5307, and turnedH2015 it 25upsideH4605 downH4605 so that the tentH168 collapsedH5307.” 14And his friendH7453 repliedH6030, “ThisH2088 is nothingH369 otherH1115H518 thanH1115H518 the swordH2719 of GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of JoashH3060, a manH376 of IsraelH3478; GodH430 has 26handedH5414H3027 overH5414 to him MidianH4080 and allH3605 the campH4264.”
15When GideonH1439 heardH8085 the accountH4557 of the dreamH2472 and its interpretationH7667, he bowedH2331 inH2331 worshipH2331. Then he returnedH7725 to the campH4264 of IsraelH3478 and saidH559, “AriseH6965, for the LordH3068 has handedH5414H3027 overH5414 to you the campH4264 of MidianH4080!” 16And he dividedH2673 the threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 into threeH7969 27unitsH7218, and he putH5414 trumpetsH7782 and emptyH7386 pitchersH3537 into the handsH3027 of allH3605 of them, with torchesH3940 insideH8432 the pitchersH3537. 17Then he saidH559 to them, “LookH7200 at me and doH6213 likewiseH3651. And beholdH2009, when I comeH935 to the outskirtsH7097 of the campH4264, 28doH6213 as I doH6213. 18When I and allH3605 whoH834 are with me blowH8628 the trumpetH7782, then you alsoH1571 blowH8628 the trumpetsH7782 aroundH5439 the entireH3605 campH4264 and sayH559, ‘For the LordH3068 and for GideonH1439!’”
Confusion of the Enemy
19So GideonH1439 and the hundredH3967 menH376 whoH834 were with him cameH935 to the outskirtsH7097 of the campH4264 at the beginningH7218 of the middleH8484 nightH821 watchH821, whenH389 they had justH389 postedH6965 the watchH8104; and they blewH8628 the trumpetsH7782 and smashedH5310 the pitchersH3537 that were in their handsH3027. 20When the threeH7969 29unitsH7218 blewH8628 the trumpetsH7782 and brokeH7665 the pitchersH3537, they heldH2388 the torchesH3940 in their leftH8040 handsH3027 and the trumpetsH7782 in their rightH3225 handsH3027 for blowingH8628, and shoutedH7121, “A swordH2719 for the LordH3068 and for GideonH1439!” 21And eachH376 stoodH5975 inH8478 his placeH8478 aroundH5439 the campH4264; and 30allH3605 the 31armyH4264 ranH7323, cryingH7321 outH7321 as they fledH5127. 22And when they blewH8628 the threeH7969 hundredH3967 trumpetsH7782, the 32LordH3068 setH7760 the swordH2719 of oneH376 against anotherH7453 even throughoutH3605 the entireH3605 33armyH4264; and the 34armyH4264 fledH5127 as farH5704 as Beth-shittahH1029 toward ZererahH6888, as farH5704 as the edgeH8193 of 35Abel-meholahH65, by TabbathH2888. 23And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were summonedH6817 from 36NaphtaliH5321, AsherH836, and allH3605 ManassehH4519, and they pursuedH7291H310 MidianH4080.
24Then GideonH1439 sentH7971 messengersH4397 throughoutH3605 the hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669, sayingH559, “ComeH3381 downH3381 37againstH7122 MidianH4080 and 38takeH3920 controlH3920 of the watersH4325 ahead of them, as farH5704 as Beth-barahH1012 and the JordanH3383.” So allH3605 the menH376 of EphraimH669 were summonedH6817, and they tookH3920 controlH3920 of the watersH4325 as farH5704 as Beth-barahH1012 and the JordanH3383. 25And they capturedH3920 the twoH8147 leadersH8269 of MidianH4080, 39OrebH6159 and ZeebH2062, and they killedH2026 OrebH6159 at the rockH6697 of OrebH6159, and they killedH2026 ZeebH2062 at the wineH3342 pressH3342 of ZeebH2062, while they pursuedH7291 MidianH4080; and they broughtH935 the headsH7218 of OrebH6159 and ZeebH2062 to GideonH1439 40from acrossH5676 the JordanH3383.
