Context of Luke 11:29
27While Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that carried You, and the breasts at which You nursed!” 28But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and follow it.” Now as the crowds were increasing, He began to say, “This generation is a wicked generation; it demands a sign, and so no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31The Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-36Verses 29-36 Christ promised that there should be one sign more given, even the sign of Jonah the prophet; which in Matthew is explained, as meaning the resurrection of Christ; and he warned them to improve this sign. But though Christ himself were the constant preacher in any congregation, and worked miracles daily among them, yet unless his grace humbled their hearts, they would not profit by his word. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29-30The sign of Jonah might refer to the resurrection of Jesus. Jonah's time in the fish was a sign to the Ninevites that God had sent him, similar to the time Jesus spent in the grave ("in the heart of the earth"; Matthew 12:40).
