Jonah’s Displeasure Rebuked

1But it greatlyH1419 displeasedH7489H7463 JonahH3124, and he becameH2734 1angryH2734. 2Then he 2prayedH6419 to the LordH3068 and saidH559, “PleaseH577 LordH3068, was thisH2088 not 3whatH1697 I saidH1696 whenH5704 I was stillH5704 in my own countryH127? ThereforeH5921H3651 inH6923 anticipationH6923 of this I 4fledH1272 to TarshishH8659, sinceH3588 I knewH3045 that You are a 5graciousH2587 and compassionateH7349 GodH410, slowH750 to angerH639 and abundantH7227 in mercyH2617, and One who relentsH5162 of disasterH7463. 3So nowH6258, LordH3068, pleaseH4994 6takeH3947 my 7lifeH5315 from me, for deathH4194 is 8betterH2896 to me thanH4480 lifeH2425.” 4But the LordH3068 saidH559, “Do you haveH3190 a goodH3190 reasonH3190 to beH2734 angryH2734?”

5Then JonahH3124 leftH3318 the cityH5892 and satH3427 downH3427 eastH6924 of 9it. ThereH8033 he madeH6213 a shelterH5521 for himself and 10satH3427 underH8478 it in the shadeH6738, untilH5704H834 he could seeH7200 whatH4100 would happenH1961 in the cityH5892. 6So the LordH3068 GodH430 designatedH4487 a 11plantH7021, and it grewH5927 upH5927 overH4480H5921 JonahH3124 to be a shadeH6738 overH5921 his headH7218, to 12relieveH5337 him of his discomfortH7463. And JonahH3124 13was overjoyedH8057H1419H8055 aboutH5921 the plantH7021. 7But GodH430 designatedH4487 a wormH8439 when dawnH7837 cameH5927 the nextH4283 dayH4283, and it attackedH5221 the plantH7021 and it 14witheredH3001. 8And when the sunH8121 cameH2224 up GodH430 designatedH4487 a scorchingH2759 15eastH6921 windH7307, and the 16sunH8121 beatH5221 downH5921 on Jonah’sH3124 headH7218 so that he becameH5968 faintH5968, and he beggedH7592 with all his soulH5315 to dieH4191, sayingH559, “17DeathH4194 is betterH2896 to me thanH4480 lifeH2425!”

9But GodH430 saidH559 to JonahH3124, “Do you haveH3190 a goodH3190 reasonH3190 to beH2734 angryH2734 aboutH5921 the plantH7021?” And he saidH559, “I haveH3190 goodH3190 reasonH3190 to beH2734 angryH2734, even to the pointH5704 of deathH4194!” 10Then the LordH3068 saidH559, “You hadH2347 compassionH2347 on the plantH7021, for whichH834 you did not workH5998 and which you did not cause to growH1431, whichH7945 18cameH1961 up overnightH1121H3915 and perishedH6 19overnightH1121H3915. 11Should I not also 20haveH2347 compassionH2347 on NinevehH5210, the greatH1419 cityH5892 in whichH834 thereH3426 areH3426 moreH7235 thanH4480 120,000H8147H6240H7239 peopleH120, whoH834 do not 21knowH3045 the difference betweenH996 their rightH3225 handH3225 and their leftH8040, as well as manyH7227 22animalsH929?”
