Isaiah 38:9-22

9This is a writing of Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and 1recovery:10I said, “2In the middle of my 3life I am to enter the 4gates of Sheol; I have been 5deprived of the rest of my years.”11I said, “I will not see the Lord, The Lord 6in the land of the living; I will no longer look on mankind among the inhabitants of the world.12Like a shepherd’s 7tent my dwelling is pulled up and removed from me; As a 8weaver I 9rolled up my life. He 10cuts me off from the loom; From 11day until night You make an end of me.13I composed my soul until morning. 12Like a lion--so He 13breaks all my bones, From 14day until night You make an end of me.1415Like a swallow, like a crane, so I twitter; I 16moan like a dove; My 17eyes look wistfully to the heights; Lord, I am oppressed, be my 18security.

15“19What shall I say? 20For He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done it; I will 21walk 22quietly all my years because of the 23bitterness of my soul.16Lord, 24by these things people live, And in all these is the life of my spirit; 2526Restore me to health and 27let me live!17Behold, for my own welfare I had great bitterness; But You have 2829kept my soul from the pit of 30nothingness, For You have 31hurled all my sins behind Your back.18For 32Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; Those who go down 33to the pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness.19It is the 34living who give thanks to You, as I do today; A 35father tells his sons about Your faithfulness.20The Lord is certain to save me; So we will 36play my songs on stringed instruments 37All the days of our life 38at the house of the Lord.”

21Now 39Isaiah had said, “Have them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, so that he may recover.” 22Then Hezekiah had said, “What is the 40sign that I will go up to the house of the Lord?”
