“Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into His rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. There is such a thing as great prudence that means great hindrance because of unbelief. It is that living, working faith we need that shall take God at His word. Faith may appear like presumption, but the Word of God will be verified. His declaration is Yea and Amen. The people of God who have so great light and truth and evidence are not as advanced as they should be. We cannot afford to lift up our souls in self-sufficiency, neither can we afford to be behind and sluggish because the leaven of unbelief has found its place in our hearts. “Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 4:1, 2.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The Lord calls for an entire change of spirit, a thorough conversion in the ministry, north and south, east and west. The day of God will come on all who are giving heed to Satan’s suggestions, as a thief in the night. “Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of us should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them. But the word preached did not profit, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 4:1, 2.] Those who have not walked in the light as Christ is in the light are in a position similar to the position occupied by those spoken of in these verses.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Shall it be thus in these last days, just before we enter into the heavenly Canaan, that God’s people shall indulge the spirit that was revealed by ancient Israel? Men full of doubts and criticisms and complaints can sow seeds of unbelief and distrust that will yield an abundant harvest. Was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. Christ attaches great importance to the doing of the Word, as well as the hearing of it. There was a class among those who listened to His teachings who found it easy to hear, but who did not bring the truths they heard into their practical life. The divine Word is not to be treated indifferently. Paul says: “Let us therefore fear lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 4:1, 2.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The stony heart is as unimpressible as the stony ground hearers of Christ’s parable. The engrafted word is not received. “Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 4:1, 2.] You have much to learn. Unless you have a heart softened by the grace of God you will never enter into the kingdom of heaven. There are hindrances in you which you do not sufficiently consider. Hereditary tendencies and prejudices are strong. You hold fast to your impressions of men and things until, through these strong traits of character, you walk contrary to righteousness and truth. The enemy takes advantage, and brings in and makes prominent your objectionable traits of character, and deceives you. He spoils your Christian experience.Hebrews 4:1-3

The time is fast approaching when this Scripture will be fulfilled. The world and the professedly Protestant churches are in this our day taking sides with the man of sin, and to those who have the light on the commandments of God in the message given, “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, some of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them; but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day in this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.” [Hebrews 4:1-4.] The great issue that is coming will be on the seventh day Sabbath. This day God would have us reverence. “I am the Lord your God,” He declares, “walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and hallow my Sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.” [Ezekiel 20:19, 20.]Hebrews 4:1-16

I am much troubled in regard to your case because I know that from the light given of the Lord you have not, neither are you now, making straight paths for your feet. Read Hebrews chapters 1-4. “For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; but Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted and proved me, and saw my works forty years. He “hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever.” [Verse 6.] In the book of Hebrews in studying the priesthood, we find that the priests were those who presented to the Father their own case, and also the cases of others. They were to work diligently for the salvation of souls. But there are some today, even among those who are preaching the gospel, who need a new conversion. And unless they are converted, they will dishonor their Redeemer.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Christ is our Leader. Clothing His divinity with humanity, He humbled Himself, that He might stand in person at the head of the human race. He laid aside His kingly crown and yielded up His high position as Commander of the angels, who loved to do His bidding. For our sakes He became poor that through His humiliation and poverty human beings might be made rich—heirs to an eternal weight of glory. The Saviour came to the world in lowliness and lived as a man among men. On all points except sin, divinity was to touch humanity. Living on this earth as a man among men, Christ answered the question, “Can man keep the law of God?” He was tempted in all points like as man is tempted, “yet without sin.” [Hebrews 4:15.] He was tempted that He might know how to succor those that should afterward be tempted. He became a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” [Isaiah 53:5.] He gave Himself to the world as a spiritual teacher, a genuine medical missionary. O that our medical workers realized what privileges they have. They would know by practical experience what it means to hear and obey the invitation, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.]18LtMs, Ms 9, 1903, par. 27

Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight; but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. Seeing then that we have an high priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. No sinner need to keep away from God. God is acquainted with the unworthiness of all; “neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight; but all things are naked and open unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” No sinner that comes to Christ, acknowledging his inefficiency, and pleading for divine grace, is ever turned away. “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmity; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” Christ took human nature that He might become acquainted with all the temptations with which man is beset. “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” [Hebrews 4:13-16.]11LtMs, Lt 106, 1896, par. 12
God requires that everyone who names the name of Christ shall avail himself of His proffered gifts and depart from iniquity. “In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor, and some to dishonor. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” [2 Timothy 2:20-22.] “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them; but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 4:1, 2.] I entreat of you for Christ’s sake to rise from your low earthly state through faith in Jesus Christ, and become a vessel unto honor, “meet for the master’s use.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

The Lord is speaking to the church in Rockhampton. O that they would be doers of His Word. My brethren and sisters, I call upon you in the name of the Lord to hear the Word of God and to practice it. Of the Israelites the apostle says, “The word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 4:2.] This opens before us the secret of this matter, the reason why there is so little accomplished by the many discourses that are preached. The words may be indited by the Holy Spirit, but the result lies with the ones who hear. The oft-repeated charge of the Lord in His word is, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” [Matthew 11:15; Mark 4:9; Luke 8:8; 14:35.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

There is need of faith in hearing the Word. We read in Hebrews: “The word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 4:2.] This is the secret of profitable hearing. It makes every difference whether the hearer hears with faith. The children of Israel were given glad tidings of their future home in Canaan, but it did not profit them; for they did not mix faith with their hearing.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

We need to realize the necessity of exercising that faith which is acceptable to God—the faith which works by love and purifies the soul. Without faith it is impossible to hear the Word in such a way as to profit by the hearing, even though it be presented in a most impressive manner. Paul declares, “Unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them; but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” [Hebrews 4:2.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 12 [Nos. 921-999]

I have a pledge—it is from Him that made the world. Jesus Christ was sent into the world, and He took upon Himself our nature, so that we need not say, He does not know what temptations I have to meet. “Tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin,” He stands as our Exemplar. [Hebrews 4:15.] While we are associating in the world we will see injustice. One may complain saying, I am not treated as I ought to be; there is favoritism everywhere. I see it; but what difference is it how I am treated, so long as I have a chance for my soul? While you are thinking thus, I want you to remember He was tempted in all points like as I am. And He says He will succor those who are tempted. [Hebrews 2:18.] Just praise God. Let love come right into your heart, and let it swell forth in praise.7LtMs, Ms 10, 1891, par. 32
But unless you encourage the society of the heavenly angels, there may be the most solemn discourse preached, but the very moment you get out of the meeting, if you let yourself loose, you will reveal just what you are. You show whether the truth has been mingled “with faith in them that heard it” [Hebrews 4:2], or whether it has gone out like water from a leaky vessel. If the truth has taken hold of your soul it is for you to show it in your conversation.Living by Principle

Chapter 24—The Literal Week
CE 195.1
The Levites, in their hymn recorded by Nehemiah, sung, “Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things therein, ... and thou preservest them all.” [Nehemiah 9:6.] As regards this world, God’s work of creation is completed. For “the works were finished from the foundation of the world.” [Hebrews 4:3.] But his energy is still exerted in upholding the objects of his creation. It is not because the mechanism that has once been set in motion continues to act by its own inherent energy, that the pulse beats, and breath follows breath; but every breath, every pulsation of the heart is an evidence of the all-pervading care of Him in whom “we live, and move, and have our being.” [Acts 17:28.] It is not because of inherent power that year by year the earth produces her bounties, and continues her motion around the sun. The hand of God guides the planets, and keeps them in position in their orderly march through the heavens. He “bringeth out their host by number; he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.” [Isaiah 40:26.] It is through his power that vegetation flourishes, that the leaves appear, and the flowers bloom. He “maketh grass to grow upon the mountains,” and by him the valleys are made fruitful. All the beasts of the field seek their meat from God, [Psalm 147:8; 104:20, 21.] and every living creature, from the smallest insect up to man, is daily dependent upon his providential care. In the beautiful words of the psalmist, “These wait all upon thee.... That thou givest them they gather; thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.” [Psalm 104:27, 28.] His word controls the elements, he covers the heavens with clouds, and prepares rain for the earth. “He giveth snow like wool; he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes.” “When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.” [Psalm 147:16; Jeremiah 10:13.]Education

Chapter 32—Preparing for the Judgment
CET 190.3
It is now that we must keep ourselves and our children unspotted from the world. It is now that we must wash our robes of character and make them white in the blood of the Lamb. It is now that we must overcome pride, passion, and spiritual slothfulness. It is now that we must awake, and make determined effort for symmetry of character. “Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” Hebrews 4:7. We are in a most trying position, waiting, watching for our Lord’s appearing. The world is in darkness. “But ye, brethren,” says Paul, “are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.” 1 Thessalonians 5:4. It is ever God’s purpose to bring light out of darkness, joy out of sorrow, and rest out of weariness, for the waiting, longing soul.Christ’s Object Lessons

The son who for a time refused obedience to his father’s command was not condemned by Christ; and neither was he commended. The class who act the part of the first son in refusing obedience deserve no credit for holding this position. Their frankness is not to be regarded as a virtue. Sanctified by truth and holiness, it would make men bold witnesses for Christ; but used as it is by the sinner, it is insulting and defiant, and approaches to blasphemy. The fact that a man is not a hypocrite does not make him any the less really a sinner. When the appeals of the Holy Spirit come to the heart, our only safety lies in responding to them without delay. When the call comes, “Go work today in My vineyard,” do not refuse the invitation. “Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” Hebrews 4:7. It is unsafe to delay obedience. You may never hear the invitation again. This Day With God

I long to see words flowing from your pen which express the living experience of your soul. Time is short and what is done must be done quickly. You can never more be entrusted to any great and important work until you are thoroughly converted, changed in heart, in purposes, in life, and you both are dead to self and alive to Jesus Christ. You must both, my children, work from a different standpoint, in spiritual as well as temporal matters. The very same loose, superficial management you have carried in your temporal concerns, you have carried out in spiritual matters. But now, after so long a time, “Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” [Hebrews 4:7.] If Christ will graciously accept you today, with all your imperfections and your unprofitable lives, what a condescension in divine mercy, what a blessing from God to you!Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

God will give you wisdom in reforming at once, for the call is still made, “Son, go work today in my vineyard.” [Matthew 21:28.] Some may still be undecided, yet the call is heard, “Go work today in my vineyard.” “Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” [Hebrews 4:7.] The Lord prefaces the requirement by the use of the word, “son.” How tender, how compassionate, yet withal, how urgent! His invitation to work in His vineyard is also a command. “What? know ye not that your bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have in God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

God holds you and your wife accountable for neglecting to properly train and educate your children, in order that their lives shall not be superficial and without the solid acquirements that will make them what God intends they should be. Sister Lindsay will have a fearfully solemn account to render to God for her neglect to live a Christian life. Has she taught her children to deny self, and has she practiced self-denial? You will not long stand where you are. The message of God to you as a family is a decisive one. “Today, if ye will hear my voice, harden not your hearts.” [Hebrews 4:7.] Sister Lindsay needs to study the instruction given in the Word of God, “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, and of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, and that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” [1 Peter 3:3, 4.]Hebrews 4:9

“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. ... Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” [Hebrews 4:9, 11.] The rest here spoken of is the rest of grace, obtained by following the prescription, “Labor diligently.” Those who learn of Jesus His meekness and lowliness find rest in the experience of practicing His lessons. It is not in indolence, in selfish ease and pleasure-seeking, that rest is obtained. Those who are unwilling to give the Lord faithful, earnest, loving service will not find spiritual rest in this life or in the life to come. Only from earnest labor comes peace and joy in the Holy Spirit—happiness on earth and glory hereafter.16LtMs, Ms 42, 1901, par. 18
“The word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight; but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” [Hebrews 4:12, 13.]16LtMs, Ms 42, 1901, par. 21
It is Christ who searches the hearts and tries the reins of the children of men. “All things are naked and open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do,” “neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight.” [Hebrews 4:13.] In the days of ancient Israel the sacrifices brought to the high priest were cut open to the backbone to see if they were sound at heart. So the sacrifices we bring today are laid open before the piercing eye of our great High Priest. He opens and inspects every sacrifice brought by the human race, that He may prove whether it is worthy of being presented to the Father.16LtMs, Ms 42, 1901, par. 22
In Christ, divinity and humanity are united; therefore “he is able to succor all who are tempted,” “able to save to the uttermost all who come to God by Him.” [Hebrews 2:18; 7:25.] “He was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” [Hebrews 4:15.] Though so high and holy, He pities our weakness and stoops to succor us, “for it pleased the Lord to bruise him.” [Isaiah 53:10.] Satan assailed Him in every point, yet He sinned not in thought, word, or deed. “He did no violence, neither was guile found in his mouth.” [Isaiah 53:9; 1 Peter 2:22.] Walking in the midst of sin, He was “holy, harmless, undefiled.” [Hebrews 7:26.] He was wrongfully accused, yet He opened not His mouth to justify Himself. How many now, when accused of that of which they are not guilty, feel that there is a time when forbearance ceases to be a virtue, and losing their temper, speak words which grieve the Holy Spirit?16LtMs, Ms 42, 1901, par. 23
“Seeing then that we have a great high priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.” [Hebrews 4:14.] What is our profession? We profess to be following Christ. We claim to be Christians. Do we, then, reveal the Christlikeness? Do we serve the Saviour intelligently? Does the love of God continually flow from us to others? Do we in word and action, confess our Redeemer? Do we conform our lives to His holy principles? Are we pure and undefiled? Christians must hold the beginning of their confidence firm unto the end. It is not enough to profess the faith. There must be a patient endurance of all trials and a brave resistance to all temptations. Faith can be maintained only by bringing the Christian religion to the test of practice, thus demonstrating its transforming power and the faithfulness of its promises.16LtMs, Ms 42, 1901, par. 24
“We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in every time of need.” [Verses 15, 16.]Hebrews 4:11

Because they cannot fathom all its mysteries, the skeptic and the infidel reject God’s word; and not all who profess to believe the Bible are secure from temptation on this point. Says the apostle: “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” Hebrews 3:12. Minds that have been educated to criticize, to doubt and cavil because they cannot search into the purposes of God, will “fall after the same example of unbelief.” Hebrews 4:11. It is right to study closely the teaching of the Bible, and to search into “the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10), so far as they are revealed in Scripture. While “the secret things belong unto the Lord our God,” “those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children.” Deuteronomy 29:29.Hebrews 4:12

You have talked over matters as you viewed them, that the communications from Sister White are not all from the Lord, but a portion is her own mind, her own judgment, which is no better than anybody else’s judgment and ideas. This is one of Satan’s hooks to hang your doubts upon to deceive your soul and the souls of others who will dare to draw the line in this matter and say, this portion which pleases me is from God, but that portion which points out and condemns my course of conduct is from Sister White alone, and bears not the holy signet. You have in this way virtually rejected the whole of the messages, which God in His tender, pitying love has sent to you to save you from moral ruin. God presents to you His will and ways which is in marked contrast, in just that way which your case requires, and you are hereby tested whether you will accept the reproof, fall on the Rock and be broken, or will you become vexed over plain statements that come close to your soul, because it is the truth and condemns you, and then you feel at enmity with me. Hebrews 4:12. There is one back of me which is the Lord who has prompted the message, which you now reject, and disregard, and dishonor. ... Man cannot successfully cope with the enemy of his soul, but the Son of the Highest came to our world to give strength to man, that he might wage a successful warfare with Satan. Man has destroyed himself; he has not the power which our first parents had before the fall. He is utterly void of the ability to have the holy desire to advance one step in his way back to God, to do the things that are pleasing in the sight of heaven. Self-sufficiency is only inefficiency. The law of God denounces all sin. “The word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of the soul and the spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” [Hebrews 4:12.] Even the imaginings of the heart, every [thought] of wickedness, small or great, is open before the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

It is by being thus armed that we shall be able to stand against the temptations of the enemy. Our dependence must be in the Word of God. We are to say, “Thy word hath quickened me.” “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” [Psalm 119:50, 105.] “The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, and is piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” [Hebrews 4:12.] O, I thank the Lord with heart and soul that He has given us His Word as our guide and instructor.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Bear in mind that the highest qualification of the mind will not, cannot, supply the place of true simplicity, of genuine piety. The Bible may be studied as a branch of human science would be, but its beauty, the evidence of its power to save the soul that believes, is a lesson that is never thus learned. If the practice of the Word is not brought into the life, then the sword of the Spirit has not wounded the natural heart. It has been shielded in poetic fancy. Sentimentalism has so wrapped it about that the heart has not sufficiently felt the keenness of its edge, piercing and cutting away the sinful shrines where self is worshipped. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” [Hebrews 4:12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

I would be pleased to see you and your family, but do not expect that I shall enjoy this privilege. May the Lord give you increased faith and courage in Him. Do not depend on any man to be brains for you. Think and put every God-given ability to the tax. Expect that the Lord will work in and by and through you. Do not lose your zeal. Do not submerge your identity in any human being. You may be safely one with God. You may hide your entire self in Him. Be no man’s shadow. “Our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost.” [1 Thessalonians 1:5.] The Word and the Spirit agree. The instrument and the agent co-operate together. The truth is represented as the sword of the Spirit. Those who refuse to do this, who turn from the Bible and from books which make Bible truth easy to be understood, take responsibility of their course upon themselves. “Sin lieth at the door.” [Genesis 4:7.] All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and, like its Author, is perfect. He who breathed into man the breath of life, and made him a living soul, has also breathed into His Word the breath of life. It is a life-giving power. “The word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” [Hebrews 4:12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

The conformity to the Word of God of heart, mind, and strength, is the regeneration which the gospel presents. It is the Word of God, which is spiritual life to the soul. It must be eaten, digested, appropriated, in order to work the daily reformation essential for the new life. “The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and Spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” [Hebrews 4:12.] The grace of Christ working in the heart produces results. It is a means of spiritual life animating and energizing the mind and soul to create fruit unto holiness, which is the working out of the principle of eternal life. Thus the world sees and is often made to comprehend what is genuine truth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

“It is written”—the Word of the living God—this is your weapon. What wonderful comparisons are made in the Scriptures to describe the truth. It is “the sword of the Spirit,” “sharper than any two-edged sword.” [Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12.] It is the “sharp arrow,” by which the wicked are slain. [Psalm 45:5.] It is “the power of God unto salvation.” [Romans 1:16.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 4 [Nos. 210-259]

Sentimentalism has so wrapped it about that the heart has not sufficiently felt the keenness of its edge, piercing and cutting away the sinful shrines where self is worshiped. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” [Hebrews 4:12].—Manuscript 64, 1895, 3. In the commission to the early disciples, the world was their field. His disciples in this age are to carry the message to all the world. The reception of the Word of God and obedience to it will make the followers of Christ a powerful influence in the world; for the Word of God is “powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” [Hebrews 4:12.] Those who labor in the cause of God in 1907 have reason for greater faith than had the disciples in Christ’s day. We have learned much from their experience. “Seeing that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Subdue the carnal mind, reform the life, and the poor mortal frame will not be so idolized. If the heart is reformed, it will be seen in the outward appearance. If Christ be in us the hope of glory, we shall discover such matchless charms in Him that the soul will be enamored. It will cleave to Him, choose to love Him, and in admiration of Him, self will be forgotten. Jesus will be magnified and adored, and self abased and humbled. But a profession, without this deep love, is mere talk, dry formality, and heavy drudgery. Many of you may retain a notion of religion in the head, an outside religion, when the heart is not cleansed. God looks at the heart; “all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.” Hebrews 4:13. Will He be satisfied with anything but truth in the inward parts? Every truly converted soul will carry the unmistakable marks that the carnal mind is subdued. From Eternity Past

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. Hebrews 4:14.AG 69.3
As a priest, Christ is now set down with the Father in His throne. Upon the throne with the eternal, self-existent One, is He who “hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows” (Isaiah 53:4), who “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).... “If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father” (1 John 2:1). His intercession is that of a pierced and broken body, of a spotless life. The wounded hands, the pierced side, the marred feet, plead for fallen man, whose redemption was purchased at such infinite cost.3The Great Controversy, 415, 416.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

He is making intercession for the most lowly, the most oppressed and suffering, for the most tried and tempted ones. With upraised hands, He pleads, “I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” [Isaiah 49:16.] God loves to hear and responds to the pleadings of His Son. Paul writes (Hebrews 4:14, 15, [16]) “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, that is passed into the Heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. We are all deeply interested in the salvation of the souls for whom Christ has given His life. We are not only to believe in God as a gracious heavenly Father, but we are to believe in Christ as our Mediator. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Therefore, “seeing we have a great high priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession”—our faith—“and come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” “Having a high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.” [Hebrews 4:14, 16; 10:21, 22.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 16 [Nos. 1186-1235]

My dear brother, be sure that you make straight paths for your feet, lest the lame be turned out of the way. The Lord calls upon every soul to remember that Christ is the Restorer. Satan is the destroyer. We cannot afford to speak one discouraging word to souls that are weak on some, yes, many points, yet who, with encouragement, with brotherly assistance, with the help of loving arms to lift up the hands that hang down, may be inspired with faith and courage and hope, filled with a desire to pursue the upward grace [course?] until they shall come off more than conquerors through the help of their brethren and through the help of Jesus Christ who knows how to succor all who are tempted. O, how thankful we should be for the words, “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let the tenderness and love of Jesus characterize all your labors. Do not reveal a masterly spirit, as if seeking to drive matters. Christ does not say, “My sheep see and feel my whip and go before me.” He says, “My sheep hear my voice and they follow me.” [John 10:27.] Come close to hearts in simplicity and tender interest. Win the confidence of all for whom you labor. “Lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” [Hebrews 12:12-14.] “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. To save the fallen race, Christ laid aside His kingly crown and royal robe, clothed His divinity with the robe of humanity, and came to this earth. Without leaving heaven and taking the nature of man, He could not pay the ransom for our salvation; therefore He left His high command in the heavenly courts and assumed the weaknesses of humanity, sacrificing all in our behalf. He came to this earth and stood at the head of humanity, to work out for you and for me a faultless character by obedience to God’s law. He “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” [Hebrews 4:15.] The temptations that He withstood were as much stronger than ours as His nobility and majesty are greater than ours. Having been tempted so strongly on every point, He is able to succor every one whom Satan is now tempting. And today it is the privilege of men and women to gain the victory over temptation through the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour, who is familiar with every trial of humanity.17LtMs, Ms 87, 1902, par. 46

If we had to bear anything which Jesus did not endure, then upon this point Satan would represent the power of God as insufficient for us. Therefore Jesus was “in all points tempted like as we are” (Hebrews 4:15). He endured every trial to which we are subject. And He exercised in His own behalf no power that is not freely offered to us. As man, He met temptation, and overcame in the strength given Him from God. He says, “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8). As He went about doing good, and healing all who were afflicted by Satan, He made plain to men the character of God’s law and the nature of His service. His life testifies that it is possible for us also to obey the law of God.Lift Him Up

Taking humanity upon Him, Christ came to be one with humanity, and at the same time to reveal our heavenly Father to sinful human beings. He was in all things made like unto His brethren. He became flesh, even as we are. He was hungry and thirsty and weary. He was sustained by food and refreshed by sleep. He shared the lot of men, and yet he was the blameless Son of God. He was a stranger and sojourner on the earth—in the world, but not of the world; tempted and tried as men and women today are tempted and tried, yet living a life free from spot or stain of sin. “We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Brother L is passing through the most severe trials of his life. He is assailed by the fiercest temptations. But there is One who knows how to pity. Nothing in this world is so dear to God as His church. With jealous care He guards those who seek Him. Nothing so offends God as for the servants of Satan to strive to rob His people of their rights. The Lord has not forsaken His people. Satan points to the mistakes that they have made, and tries to make them believe that thus they have separated themselves from God. Evil angels seek in every way to discourage those who are striving for victory over sin. They hold up before them their past unworthiness, and represent their case as hopeless. But we have an all-powerful Redeemer. Christ came from heaven in the guise of humanity to live the principles of righteousness in this world. He was endowed with power to minister to all who would accept Him as their Redeemer, to succor the repentant ones who were convinced of the sinfulness of sin. “We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).—Letter 136, 1910. We May Overcome as Christ Overcame—The love and justice of God, and also the immutability of His law, are made manifest by the Saviour’s life, no less than by His death. He assumed human nature, with its infirmities, its liabilities, its temptations.... He was “in all points tempted like as we are” (Hebrews 4:15). He exercised in His own behalf no power which man cannot exercise. As man He met temptation, and overcame in the strength given Him of God. He gives us an example of perfect obedience. He has provided that we may become partakers of the divine nature, and assures us that we may overcome as He overcame. His life testified that by the aid of the same divine power which Christ received, it is possible for man to obey God’s law.—Manuscript 141, 1901.Steps to Christ

The apostle says, “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.” James 5:16. Confess your sins to God, who only can forgive them, and your faults to one another. If you have given offense to your friend or neighbor, you are to acknowledge your wrong, and it is his duty freely to forgive you. Then you are to seek the forgiveness of God, because the brother you have wounded is the property of God, and in injuring him you sinned against his Creator and Redeemer. The case is brought before the only true Mediator, our great High Priest, who “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin,” and who is “touched with the feeling of our infirmities,” and is able to cleanse from every stain of iniquity. They say, “It was easy for Christ to obey the will of His Father, for He was divine.” But His Word declares He was “in all points tempted like as we are” (Hebrews 4:15). He was tempted according to and in proportion to His elevation of mind, but He would not weaken or cripple His divine power by yielding to temptation. In His life on earth Christ was a representative of what humanity may be through the privileges and opportunities granted them in Him....The Desire of Ages
Chapter 1—“God With Us”
DA 24.2
Satan represents God’s law of love as a law of selfishness. He declares that it is impossible for us to obey its precepts. The fall of our first parents, with all the woe that has resulted, he charges upon the Creator, leading men to look upon God as the author of sin, and suffering, and death. Jesus was to unveil this deception. As one of us He was to give an example of obedience. For this He took upon Himself our nature, and passed through our experiences. “In all things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren.” Hebrews 2:17. If we had to bear anything which Jesus did not endure, then upon this point Satan would represent the power of God as insufficient for us. Therefore Jesus was “in all points tempted like as we are.” Hebrews 4:15. He endured every trial to which we are subject. And He exercised in His own behalf no power that is not freely offered to us. As man, He met temptation, and overcame in the strength given Him from God. He says, “I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy law is within My heart.” Psalm 40:8. As He went about doing good, and healing all who were afflicted by Satan, He made plain to men the character of God’s law and the nature of His service. His life testifies that it is possible for us also to obey the law of God.The Great Controversy
Chapter 23—What is the Sanctuary?
GC 416.3
He “shall sit and rule upon His throne; and He shall be a priest upon His throne.” Not now “upon the throne of His glory;” the kingdom of glory has not yet been ushered in. Not until His work as a mediator shall be ended will God “give unto Him the throne of His father David,” a kingdom of which “there shall be no end.” Luke 1:32, 33. As a priest, Christ is now set down with the Father in His throne. Revelation 3:21. Upon the throne with the eternal, self-existent One is He who “hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows,” who “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin,” that He might be “able to succor them that are tempted.” “If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father.” Isaiah 53:4; Hebrews 4:15; 2:18; 1 John 2:1. His intercession is that of a pierced and broken body, of a spotless life. The wounded hands, the pierced side, the marred feet, plead for fallen man, whose redemption was purchased at such infinite cost. The Great Controversy (1888 ed.)

The Elder Brother of our race is by the eternal throne. He looks upon every soul who is turning his face toward Him as the Saviour. He knows by experience what are the weaknesses of humanity, what are our wants, and where lies the strength of our temptations; for He was “in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:15. He is watching over you, trembling child of God. Are you tempted? He will deliver. Are you weak? He will strengthen. Are you ignorant? He will enlighten. Are you wounded? He will heal. The Lord “telleth the number of the stars;” and yet “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” Psalm 147:4, 3.The Ministry of Healing

We shall be saved eternally when we enter in through the gates into the city. Then we may rejoice that we are saved, eternally saved. But until then we need to heed the injunction of the apostle, and to “fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of us should seem to come short of it” (Hebrews 4:1). Having a knowledge of Canaan, singing the songs of Canaan, rejoicing in the prospect of entering into Canaan, did not bring the children of Israel into the vineyards and olive groves of the Promised Land. They could make it theirs in truth only by occupation, by complying with the conditions, by exercising living faith in God, by appropriating His promises to themselves....From the Heart

Messages are coming to us from the servants of Jesus. Warnings are given to awaken the people from their carnal security, and they are exhorted to examine their own faith and hope to see if it is in accordance with the Word of God. The warning is addressed to the people, “Be not high-minded, but fear.” [Romans 11:20.] Paul writes to the Hebrews, “Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” [Hebrews 4:1.] “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” [Romans 8:13.] To live after the flesh is to allow the appetites and passions of the flesh to rule us, to let our tongues and our tastes run in the same way as do those of the unbelieving world. Self is the idol we worship. “Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” [Ephesians 2:3.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

Will not our heavenly Father, who gave His only beloved Son to die for us, that whosoever believeth (not doubteth) in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life, [keep His promises]? May we have grace to believe in the Author and Finisher of our faith. We must individually cherish the faith that we receive of Him the things He hath promised. God will be to us everything we will let Him be. Our languid, half-hearted prayers will not bring us returns from heaven. Oh, we need to press our petitions! Ask in faith, wait in faith, receive in faith, rejoice in hope, for every one that seeketh findeth. Be in earnest in the matter. Seek God with all the heart. People put soul and earnestness into everything they undertake in temporal things, until their efforts are crowned with success. With intense earnestness learn the trade of seeking the rich blessings that God has promised, and with persevering, determined effort you shall have His light and His truth and His rich grace. These blessings, I repeat, are for me, for I cannot glorify God with soul and body and spirit without them. We need to fear, lest any should “come short of the glory of God.” [Hebrews 4:1; Romans 3:23.] But we may, if we obey God, have assurance.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

<Many> say, We believe all that is preached. But have they brought the truth presented into the soul temple? Holiness is not rapture, it is an entire surrendering of the will to God. It is living by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. It is doing the will of our heavenly Father. It is trusting God in trial, in darkness as well as in the light. It is walking by faith and not by sight. It is trusting Him with all confidence and resting in His love. We shall be eternally saved when we enter in through the gates into the city of God. Then we may rejoice that we are saved, eternally saved. Until then we may heed the admonition of the apostle to “fear, lest a promise being left us any of us should seem to come short of it.” [Hebrews 4:1.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

I am burdened over your case. In the night season I was in your company, and was listening to your words, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon me, and I addressed one and then another, and then the company as a whole. At the present time you may either do a great deal of good, or all thoughtlessly commit a large amount of evil. I read the entire chapter of (1 John 3), I presented before you the necessity of manliness and firmness in the Christian character. A cheap Christian character works more harm in the world than the character of a worldling; for professed Christians mislead others by professing to represent Him whose name they assume. “Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into His rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” [Hebrews 4:1.] “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” [Romans 12:1.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

With the peace and joy of those who thus serve God, there is always seen a godly fear, “lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” [Hebrews 4:1.] This sanctified fear is entirely proper. It is not a servile, cowardly fear; it is a dread to do anything that Christ will not approve. This fear regulates the Christian experience. Those who feel it sanctify the Lord in their hearts. They regard God with a reverence and love that leads to self-abasement. But their fear is very different from the terror of a slave, who lives in expectation of the lash. This genuine fear leads to firm reliance on God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)
