Context of Luke 5:9

7so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. 8But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.” 11When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.

Commentaries on Luke 5:9

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-11This is the first time Luke records Jesus calling the disciples to follow him. Matthew and Mark describe an earlier calling of the four brothers who were fishermen (Matthew 4:18–22; Mark 1:16–20). Jesus showed great authority in the miraculous catch of fish and in his call of Simon Peter.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-11Not their first call, however, recorded in Joh 1:35-42; nor their second, recorded in Mt 4:18-22; but their third and last before their appointment to the apostleship. That these calls were all distinct and progressive, seems quite plain.
