1 Samuel 19

(Psalm 59:1–17)

1Then SaulH7586H413 orderedH1696 his sonH1121H413 JonathanH3129 and allH3605 his servantsH5650 to killH4191 DavidH1732.

But JonathanH3083 delightedH2654 greatlyH3966 in DavidH1732, 2so heH3083 warnedH5046 DavidH1732, sayingH559, “My fatherH1 SaulH7586 intendsH1245 to kill youH4191H6258. Be on your guardH8104H4994 in the morningH1242; findH3427 a secret placeH5643 and hide thereH2244. 3I willH589 go outH3318 and standH5975 besideH3027 my fatherH1 in the fieldH7704 whereH834 youH859H8033 are, so IH589 can askH1696 about you. And if I find outH7200 anythingH4100, I will tellH5046 you.”

4Then JonathanH3083 spokeH1696 wellH2896 of DavidH1732 toH413 his fatherH1 SaulH7586 and saidH559 to himH413, “The kingH4428 should notH408 sinH2398 against his servantH5650 DavidH1732; he has notH3808 sinnedH2398 against youH3588. In factH3588, his actionsH4639 have been highlyH3966 beneficialH2896 to you. 5He tookH7760 his lifeH5315 in his handsH3709 when he struck downH5221 the PhilistineH6430, and the LORDH3068 workedH6213 a greatH1419 salvationH8668 for allH3605 IsraelH3478. You sawH7200 it and rejoicedH8055, so whyH4100 would you sinH2398 against innocentH5355 bloodH1818 by killingH4191 DavidH1732 for no reasonH2600?”

6SaulH7586 listenedH8085 to the voiceH6963 of JonathanH3083 and swore an oathH7650H7586: “As surely as the LORDH3068 livesH2416, David will notH518 be put to deathH4191.”

7So JonathanH3083 summonedH7121 DavidH1732 and toldH5046 him allH3605 theseH428 thingsH1697. Then JonathanH3083 broughtH935H3083 DavidH1732 toH413 SaulH7586, andH1961 David was withH6440 Saul as beforeH865H8032.

8When warH4421 broke outH1961 againH3254, DavidH1732 went outH3318 and foughtH3898 the PhilistinesH6430 and struckH5221 them with such a mightyH1419 blowH4347 that they fledH5127 before himH6440.

9But as SaulH1931 was sittingH3427 in his houseH1004 with his spearH2595 in his handH3027, a spiritH7307 of distressH74511 from the LORDH3068 cameH1961 uponH413 himH7586. While DavidH1732 was playing the harpH5059H3027, 10SaulH7586 triedH1245 to pinH5221 himH1732 to the wallH7023 with his spearH2595. But DavidH1732 eludedH6362H6440 him and the spearH2595 struckH5221 the wallH7023. And David fledH5127 and escapedH4422 thatH1931 nightH3915.

11Then SaulH7586 sentH7971 messengersH4397 toH413 David’sH1732 houseH1004 to watch himH8104 and kill himH4191 in the morningH1242. But David’s wifeH802H559 MichalH4324 warnedH5046 him, “IfH518 you do notH369 runH4422 for your lifeH5315 tonightH3915, tomorrowH4279 youH859 will be deadH4191!” 12So MichalH4324 loweredH3381 DavidH1732 fromH1157 the windowH2474H1980, and he ran awayH1272 and escapedH4422.

13Then MichalH4324 tookH3947 a household idolH86552 and laidH7760 it inH413 the bedH4296, placedH7760 some goat hairH3523H5795 on its headH4763, and coveredH3680 it with a garmentH899. 14When SaulH7586 sentH7971 the messengersH4397 to seizeH3947 DavidH1732, Michal saidH559, “HeH1931 is illH2470.”

15But SaulH7586 sentH7971 the messengers backH4397 to seeH7200 DavidH1732 and told themH559, “BringH5927 himH853 up to meH413 in his bedH4296 so I can kill himH4191.” 16And when the messengersH4397 enteredH935, there wasH2009 the idolH8655 inH413 the bedH4296 with the goatH3523H5795 hair on its headH4763.

17And SaulH7586 saidH559 to MichalH4324, “WhyH4100 did you deceive meH7411 like thisH3602? You sent my enemyH341 awayH7971, and he has escapedH4422!”

MichalH4324H413 repliedH559, “HeH1931 saidH559 to meH413, ‘Help me get awayH7971, orH4100 I will kill youH4191!’”

18So DavidH1732 ran awayH1272 and escapedH4422. And he wentH935 toH413 SamuelH8050 at RamahH7414 and toldH5046 him allH3605 thatH834 SaulH7586 had doneH6213 to him. Then heH1931 and SamuelH8050 wentH1980 to Naioth and stayedH3427 there.

19When SaulH7586 was toldH5046H559H2009 that DavidH1732 was at NaiothH5121 in RamahH7414, 20heH7586 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to seizeH3947 himH1732. But when they sawH7200 the groupH3862 of prophetsH5030 prophesyingH5012, with SamuelH8050H5975 leading themH5324, the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 cameH1961 uponH5921 themH5921, and Saul’sH7586 messengersH4397 alsoH1571 began to prophesyH5012.

21When this was reportedH5046 to SaulH7586, he sentH7971 moreH312 messengersH4397, but theyH1992 began to prophesyH5012 as wellH1571.

So SaulH7586 tried againH3254 and sentH7971 messengersH4397 a thirdH7992 time, and evenH1571 theyH1992 began to prophesyH5012.

22Finally, Saul himselfH1931 left forH1980H1571 RamahH7414 and cameH935 toH5704 the largeH1419 cisternH953 at SecuH7906, where he askedH7592H559, “WhereH375 are SamuelH8050 and DavidH1732?”

“At NaiothH5121 in RamahH7414,” he was toldH559.

23So Saul wentH1980H8033 toH413 NaiothH5121 in RamahH7414. But the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 cameH1961 uponH5921 evenH1571 Saul, and he walked alongH1980 prophesyingH5012 untilH5704 he came toH935 NaiothH5121 in RamahH7414. 24Then SaulH1931 stripped offH6584 his robesH899 and alsoH1571 prophesiedH5012 beforeH6440 SamuelH8050. And he collapsedH5307 and lay nakedH6174 allH3605 thatH1931 dayH3117 andH3605 nightH3915. That is whyH5921H3651 it is saidH559, “Is SaulH7586 alsoH1571 among the prophetsH5030?”
